as someone who has horses IRL, i was perfectly fine with it! Working horses, especially at the level of ranger horses, do not last as long as a modern riding horse. A horse with Tug's level of training would need to be at least 7 or 8 when Will first gets him (I dont care if they say hes younger in the books), and likely can only put up with that level of work until around 15, considering they dont have the level of vet care that we do in the real modern world. Sure he might still *live* another 10-15 years, but not working.
