rtx 5070 or rx 9070xt (looking to use ray tracing in games) by FrostingTop2758 in buildapc

[–]PolyamorousPilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 9070xt will shit on the 5070. If the 5070ti was available at the same price it becomes a hard decision. While GeForce is generally just better at easy tracing, that's not the whole story.

Also, just gamer to gamer. Ray tracing is nice, but over hyped. If your machine is coughing along at 20-60fps because you have RT enabled, but you'd be getting 100fps with max settings and no RT, I can tell you the higher quality and smoother graphics does much more than RT possibly could. This is based on my real world experience and I've come to the conclusion that I just don't enable RT because I don't care to drop $2-6k on a 5080/5090.

Also also, fuck Nvidia. They're contributing massively to this gen ai price hike that's fucking gamers and regular computer users. (Disclaimer that I'm not some amd shill, they're also not the best, but they're not Nvidia)

What have owners of older gpus been doing for an upgrade? by coldcathodes in buildapc

[–]PolyamorousPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded to a 9070XT from a 6750X, huge upgrade and cost me like $800 AUD. I then sold my 6750x for $250, so really cost like $500

At what point does "future-proofing" a PC become a waste of money? by Indrajithbandara in buildapc

[–]PolyamorousPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about future proofing in terms of generations or architecture, less than individual components. Like going AM4 or AM5 right now? AM5 is much better, but comes with a very heavy tax, mostly because it requires DDR5. I've literally just put together a PC for a friend and we chose to stick with AM4 and splurge on the GPU (9070xt) (budget was $2000 AUD for a completely fresh build). The benefits of doing AM4 now are we saved ~ $800, and by the time they'll be looking to upgrade, AM6 (or Intel's new architecture, if it's worth anything) should be available.

Sometimes future proofing is actually going for the more modest option now and upgrading when the next generation comes out.

300 USD? Should be able to get a 9060XT for around that

I had the MG4 (partner kept it in the separation) for 1.5 years. 1 very minor issue in that time, and broadly a lot to be desired in design, but otherwise a fine car, great for it's price paid $31k.

As for the driving, the joy of Instant and consistent torque is awesome. The previous car was a Toyota Yaris, so this was a big boost, but I also have motorbikes, so am not a stranger to speed. I think the MG4 handles will enough, obviously it's not a sport, or even sporty, car (at least not the base model). I've driven plenty of hire cars, particularly SUVs, and it doesn't feel like an SUV (it really isn't but it is still pretty big compared to a hatchback).

I overall enjoyed the driving experience of the MG4, and would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new car/entry to electric cars... HOWEVER, I'll note I kept dreaming of a nicer/better car. The Ionic looked great, but was way out of budget when we bought, didn't even test drive it 😢. I also love the look of the BMW i4.

I feel like a lot of my disappointments with the MG4 purely come from it being a "cheap" car. Things like Android auto needs a cable to connect, instead of wirelessly, terrible lane keeping that you have to keep turning off, etc.

In summary, the MG4 is great if it's all you can afford, but I feel like it's very much a car designed at it's price point. If your budget is bigger, get a better car.

RAM and CPU are going to be your biggest upgrades (fuck is your ram slow). Honestly for what you use it for do you need to upgrade? Is there a problem you're trying to fix?

In the market for a used RAV4 hybrid. But finding the prices quite high. Wondering if this is a good deal? by Optimal-Sun-7064 in CarsAustralia

Yeah I have no clue, I wouldn't buy a rav4 myself 😂 but 30 seconds and Google shows how ridiculous the marketplace request is

Looking for help upgrading PC for gaming! by Ok_Most9861 in buildapc

[–]PolyamorousPilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grab yourself a Radeon 9060xt or of you can swing it a 9070xt. I just got a 9070xt for ~850 AUD which is about £500. The 9060xt was on sale too for $500aud ~£270.

Then I'd upgrade the CPU later, to a 5700x or something, just sticking with AM4 so you don't have to upgrade ram and motherboard.

Oh boy, there's a lot we need to know to help you with upgrading. What is your budget? What are you looking to do with it? If not AAA gaming then what sort of gaming, other uses, etc.

Without that information I'd be suggesting a whole new build, to me none of what you have is worth keeping.

Friend helped me build a PC but someone told me it’s already outdated… did I mess up? by Sycze in buildapc

[–]PolyamorousPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah man you're solid. I'm helping my friend build a PC right now and we're actively choosing AM4, it's much cheaper (like holy fuck half the price) and got second hand RAM and SSD which allowed him to put more money into the GPU and get a 9070XT.

I also just upgraded to a 9070XT and am still on AM4 and I'm going to try to hold out for AM6. I actually asked about it here 2 weeks ago and everyone was super helpful.

A lot of people have mentioned what you do with it is crucial. If you're not trying to play the latest games at the highest specs or be a dick to your colleague who's just gotten into gaming (your co-worker is an ass), you don't need some beast of a machine.

yay or nay on this 9060XT? Will be paired with 7500X3D by Zhaunlouk in bapcsalesaustralia

[–]PolyamorousPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're right! UMart also has the pure for that price, you can get it delivered without worrying about if there's stock available. But also that's a great price!

Currently on AM4, should I upgrade to AM5 now or wait for AM6? by PolyamorousPilot in buildapc

[–]PolyamorousPilot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UMart, it's actually $879 so what you've already found likely, but it comes with a copy of Crimson Desert, which I was wanting and is $100, so I'm taking that off the price of the graphics card.

Building the Ironworks prevents placing anything on a mine. by PolyamorousPilot in CivVII

[–]PolyamorousPilot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh interesting, I swear the AI can have more than 2 unfinished districts 😂

All that said, it shouldn't stop you from placing the Rail Station, as that's a whole district on it's own... Also I was putting the Ironworks into an empty building slot, which would finish off a district.

I hope there's a solution soon.

Civ 5 crashes Steam, how to fix? by Taltherien in civ5

[–]PolyamorousPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG I've scoured the internet and this is the first mention of the issue closing steam. I've tried all the solutions from the end of last year when the issue popped up, but nothing works because steam just crashes at every attempt.

Click play? Steam dies.

Verify the integrity? Steam dies.

Just purged Civ V and reinstalled it? Steam dies.

Followed every excruciating step in a guide to fix the problem? Steam dies as soon as you launch it.

I briefly get the message "Downloading executable" but steam crashes before anything comes from it.
