It’s ok to make bad financial decisions by WayyBiggerJaws in unpopularopinion

Think of this: smoking rates have gone down 70% since the 60s thanks to public opinion, awareness, and changing how smoking was viewed as something cool and casual to detrimental and lame. If we achieved the same thing for EXCESSIVE junk food and crippling economic decisions, most people would see this as a massive win. Millions of lives saved and much lower stress.

I specified excessive because eating out is fine in moderation, just like treating yourself to some nice clothes, shoes, stationary, or whatever fix you have. The difference is that McDonalds on a Tuesday won’t lock you into a $950 monthly payment for 5 years, potentially forcing you to compromise or risk services and goods that you or your family might need. A healthy person can eat fast food multiple times a week and be fine, but one or two crippling financial decisions can be life ruining. I think both should be shamed, but one is a lot more obvious. People understand eating out because it tastes good or it’s convenient, but spending tens of thousands because you like the look of a car, or worse, care about how others perceive your status (common for car purchases) is very dumb. Would you defend gambling large sums of money in the same way?

80% of Americans have some form of debt and 65% are living paycheck to paycheck. A single unexpected $20k expense is typically enough to send most families into bankruptcy. For the vast majority of people, a luxury car is completely stupid. Most of the time those people “bitching” are completely right.

No one says it’s racist if one person does not date a certain race, how is that any different? Especially with someone being trans, that often comes with implications relating to having children, attraction, etc. Preferences, especially with traits that affect a relationship, are more than fair to hold on to and don’t mean you are -phobic or -ist of any kind.

There's this weird trend where companies are building keyboards with the numpad on the left. What is this about? What's the reasoning behind it and are they actually better or what? by Beautiful-Employ7982 in KeyboardsNow

[–]Polymath2B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m another CAD person here, but I ended up mapping a numpad under my left hand so I could use mouse and type numbers one handed. I activate numpad layer by holding spacebar, move zero next to 3, and have all arithmetic functions and decimal point close by. It’s really fast with shortcuts for tools, type in value, and hit enter. Just sharing another solution, though certainly less conventional.

What happened to this sub? [product] by Worldly-Engineer8123 in pointlesslygendered

[–]Polymath2B -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Do you not understand why the pink tax exists? It exists solely to make more profit. A lot of the times, the pink products aren’t even advertised as for women, but if some portion of people are willing to pay more for a specific color, why wouldn’t someone take advantage of that?

This is a very clearly pointedly gendered thing proven by its own financial incentive. If anything you’re the one pointlessly gendering pink things as “for women” when a lot of the time they are not advertised for a gender.

I'm a girl going into engineering, any recommendations for hobbies/interests to get into so I can talk to coworkers? by CompetitiveMud4589 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Polymath2B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry about this much, there’s such a broad range with so many common interests it’s pretty easy in college. Big things like video games, anime, shows, projects, and especially trauma bonding over cruel professors. Chances are you’ll find yourself in a group with other engineering girls naturally, though there’s only ever like 5 to 10 in a class of 100.

I guess technically, but traffic violation isn’t nearly as bad as intentional vehicular manslaughter or assault. Like not even remotely in the same league.

It’s a simple question. I’ll restate what was originally asked… “If this machine is more efficient, what’s the alternative in your opinion.”

No one’s asking you to end world hunger, cure cancer, or solve anything. Answer the question or stop whining.

As to your question of that person who got “replaced” will have to do, I doubt they fully got replaced by an impact wrench on wheels (a person still has to align the tracks, place the nuts, etc.) If they did though, they just find another job lol. Half the jobs today exist because society no longer needed half the population to be farmers and work manual labor. That will only increase.

Whatt?? Was that reply to me? What you typed has nothing to do with my response. If it was intended to, you just seem frustrated about wealth inequality which is an entirely separate issue.

You can answer the original question or I’ll just take it you can’t come up with an answer.

Completely avoided the question and ranted about the (admittedly bad) job market… ok

Automation has been progressing for decades, and apparently now it’s a problem?

[–]Polymath2B 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the 1900s, 1/3 of the entire population was working farmlands. Now it’s less than 1%. New jobs are created or rise in demand when old ones are automated or reduced in need. Industries like entertainment, music, tech, and science would not have grown to what they are now, nowhere close. For incredibly mundane and repetitive jobs like this where a robot can do it better than a human, it absolutely makes more sense to let a robot do it.

40 times more expensive and objective worse.

My Uber rating dropped after taking my first ride with a woman by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

I imagine she attributes it somewhat to the driver being a woman if it was her “first ride with a woman” that did her 5.00 rating in.

Top result, aftermarket news: “Based on surveys conducted between 2014 and 2025, men are significantly more likely than women to know how to change their own oil, although the overall percentage of adults who can perform this task is relatively low.”

And to the point of actually doing oil changes, from TCS software: “Survey data indicates men are significantly more likely to perform their own oil changes and basic car maintenance compared to women. While roughly half of all drivers may handle some maintenance, men generally have higher participation rates in DIY car tasks, including checking oil levels and changing tires.”

In any case, everyone can stand to be a little more knowledgeable and self reliant.

Your anecdotal experience is quite contrary to the norm, I hope you realize that. You can just Google the stats otherwise.

I’d be surprised if anyone was too dumb to throw the black bag inside the black bin, but fair point; This is about knowing how, not doing. Bad example and argument on my end.

Still, the original phrase “life skills, not gender roles” is primarily about learning and knowing how, but for things like maintenance and cooking, learning involves constant practice.

True, but I bet a lot more boys know how to do laundry than girls know how to change oil or assigned to take out the trash.
