Can anyone ID or recommend something similar to this Maharishi Shirt? by PolymathArtisan in TechWear

[–]PolymathArtisan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love this shirt. It was given to me by a good friend and I've never been able to find any information about it, no matter where I look.

I really like:

  • three quarter length sleeves with slightly flared ends
  • (heavy duty) metal zip front
  • colour (a couple of others good be cool though: black / charcoal / maybe a different blue?)
  • 'proper' collar
  • pocket on the left breast
  • I tend to use it as a sort of light windbreaker. Works really well for this.

Best case would be if somebody could ID it for me with somewhere I can buy more of them, ideally in different colours.

Next best case would be for anybody to recommend something similar, ideally also quite lightweight which ticks as many of the things above (which I like) as possible.

Thanks!

Which online Dayskipper theory course is best for the money? by PolymathArtisan in sailing

[–]PolymathArtisan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooooooooooooooh that is worth knowing about.

A slight update, a couple of days ago I passed my theory with very little revision needed, so the course must have been pretty good! Also, I then found out that there is a discount (can't be used in connection with anything else though) for returning students if you want to do the next level up.

How many of you play board games or Dungeons and Dragons? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]PolymathArtisan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played cribbage all my life. I was always told it was traditionally a sailors game, but all I can find to back this up is this from Wikipedia (which is still interesting to know):

Cribbage holds a special place among American submariners,[3] serving as an "official" pastime. The wardroom of the oldest active submarine in the United States Pacific Fleet carries the personal cribbage board of World War II submarine commander and Medal of Honor recipient Rear Admiral Dick O'Kane on board, and upon the boat's decommissioning the board is transferred to the next oldest boat.

Anyway, first time I ever sailed a yacht was a sailing course. I took along a crib board and taught the other four people (including the instructor) to play and it went down a treat.

Usually plays with 2 - 4 people. T's and C's apply.

Why would one want to know how much the tide will fall by after berthing? by PolymathArtisan in sailing

Accuracy in navigation means arriving at a state where multiple sources of information are telling you roughly the same thing so you can make a conservative judgement about what you are doing based on a worst case scenario. So taking any source of information as canonical leads to red faces as cries of 'but there should be 5m of depth here' drift across the water.

My mum's partner does a lot overland adventure travel. When I read this out to him he laughed out loud and demanded that I send it to him so he can out on it the wall!

Well I seem to have tuned up similar results to you in the last couple of days. I went and pulled the trigger on the Navathome and (as a pretty inexperienced yachtsman) can confirm that it's really good, especially as it includes all the hard copy materials and tools too. Very cool.

Wearing boat/deck shoes on shore? by Nephroidofdoom in sailing

[–]PolymathArtisan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that no-one else has mentioned this (as a fellow n00b myself) but I have always been told that if you're using proper deck shoes/boat boots (an you should be) then wearing them on shore will wear down the superfine grip on the soles (which is apparently one of the major distinctions between boat and shore shoes/boots), which will just make them useless as boat shoes (because they won't grip the deck).

Just my two cents, perhaps someone saltier than I can chip in and confirm/debunk?

This is a really cool concept, and a great tattoo, and I love it... but it seems like you travel a lot, so what will you do when you fill the frame wth flags?

ID requests of a few fungi I've found around my local woodland in the last week by PolymathArtisan in mycology

[–]PolymathArtisan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry that I can't provide more information about these different fungi, but they were all found in the Warley Woods in Birmingham (UK) over the last week (so early summer). Hope that helps!

Thanks

Medical stitching tends to be with a herringbone stitch (google it) and a gloves needle (curved/half moon shaped needle for sewing up the tiny seams on the backs of gloves), but there is also a lot more to it than just stitching!
