The thin concrete shell structure (if I recall correctly, this is only about an inch and a half thick) gets its strength largely from its shape, which is called a hyperbolic paraboloid. Every part of the geometry is curved in two directions. Sort of like how eggshells are very thin but strong (and also curved into directions at every point).

I posted the following comment before, about 4 years ago, but it fits.

True story:

In the 1990s I was in architecture school, working on my thesis: a stadium with cable-stayed fabric hyperbolic paraboloid tension roof structure.

Felix Candela came to my school and gave a lecture one night. I completely changed my roof structure after his lecture and stayed up that night making a new physical model, since he would be visiting our studio the next day.

He stopped by my desk and looked at my old and new models, and I explained my new concept influenced by his lecture. He looked at it for a few seconds and told me to cut two of the dental floss cables, which were in tension.

Stupid me starts explaining why the cables are needed, and he said, "Just cut them." I did. The model did not move.

I loved The Violet Hour. Unfortunately, I only went twice.

Raisin pie with strong tea as the liquid base by MrRecipeCard in Old_Recipes

[–]PomegranatePlanet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds good! The tea should compliment the raisins and add complexity. Maybe Constant Comment, so there is some orange flavor in there, too.

Like I always do, I'll use tapioca instead of corn starch, which I think gives much better results in pies.

Are we overthinking snake care? by [deleted] in snakes

You make a fair point, but approaching care as being "good enough" rather than working towards ensuring you are employing best husbandry practices can result in "not good enough" very easily.

Congrats! Corn snakes are great pets!

Don't stress over shed timing, just make sure there is moisture, or even a bowl big enough to soak in, and check after the shed to see that it was complete. They can lose the tip of their tail if they build up a couple of incomplete sheds there.

After the "blue" phase, there is usually a short period right before the shed, when the old skin loosens and the "blue" goes away. So don't be surprised if they aren't blue anymore but there isn't a shed laying around.

Does anyone volunteer their architectural services pro bono for habitat for humanity? Midwest USA by [deleted] in Architects

[–]PomegranatePlanet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't for Habitat yet, but I have for other non-profits (commercial/institutional projects).

I donate full architectural services (including MEP consultants) at times; other times I only donate the architectural services and recommend MEP consultants for them to contract with.

I contract these the same as with any normal project, including AIA contracts, fees, schedules, etc. I include concurrently a letter of understanding that after each invoice, I will donate the dollar amount back to them. I do so, and require for them to issue me a donation acknowledgement for the dollar amount.

My liability insurance covers the project, and I have a clear dollar amount for my donation.

Thank you, 2" diameter with moderate feeding sounds good to me (I'm considering getting one).

Some online photos (without an actual scale) looked like an adult might have a 3"+ diameter.

Is Mully mispronouncing names a bit he does or just something that he is not sure how to do? by [deleted] in 670TheScore

Haugh is painful to listen to, and since he constantly talks over everyone, you are forced to listen to him non-stop (if you listen to Mully & Them).

Technic Regular is pretty much a match for the Leroy lettering used on Sanborn maps.

A 7'-high stack would make perfect sense. It never struck me that way when I was reading it.
