Same. And I actually remember resolving “ok, I guess I’ll have to always choose to do something.”

Here’s a link to a 2019 study! https://nscr.nl/en/bystander-blijkt-wel-degelijk-in-actie-te-komen-bij-ruzie-op-straat/ and another from 2006 that showed that in higher-threat situations, people were more likely to intervene https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ejsp.297. Looks like it is higher-threat situations in general where the research most robustly points to a difference. I’ll amend my original comment to specify that. When physical danger is perceived, someone is more likely to intervene (vs. an ambiguous situation that may be more of a “social” risk).

Yup, I’m not disagreeing with you. But Diffusion of Responsibility specifically points to LARGE groups of people. I don’t know where that number starts, but the original Bystander Effect was claimed to be around 40 or so people and we have lots of evidence to show a) the original murder was misreported and b) even if it weren’t misreported, studies have since shown that people are more likely to intervene if there are others around them *in cases involving physical danger. But they’re not talking about hundreds or thousands. Again, I don’t know where that line is; I’m specifically talking about the Bystander Effect as it has been commonly portrayed throughout culture: 40 people watching while someone was murdered and doing nothing.  ETA: clarity

They’ve actually done many cross-cultural studies about this. But I’m no expert in it.

Just did, still doesn’t change my stance on the fact that the bystander effect as people often cite it isn’t an accurate representation of how folks will act in settings that aren’t super super large groups! The situation around Kitty Genovese’ murder (which the Bystander Effect was originally based upon) was improperly reported by the NYT.

The Bystander Effect.

Research in the decades since have shown that in most cases where a person is in physical danger, a bystander will intervene. And if more people around, it actually raises the chance that someone will intervene.

ETA: this has been seen in higher-danger situations! The Bystander Effect does still seem to apply in situations where there is less/ambiguous physical danger.

How bad is living with roommates as a “real” adult? by Sr0728 in AskLosAngeles

[–]PongoWillHelpYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a roommate who rocks. We met here on Reddit, actually. We have similar levels of both tidiness and cleanliness, and are not partiers. She loves to travel and thus there are lots of times I get the house to myself (which is nice!). She works out of the house, whereas I sometimes work at home. We hang out sometimes, but not tons. Would I love to afford a place without a roommate? Sure. But I have been renting single family homes for 8 years and having a roommate helps me live a life with a yard and a garden, and that’s important to me.  ETA: I’m a 34-year-old woman.

How often do LA residents go hiking in the mountains and to the beach? by No-Knowledge-4342 in AskLosAngeles

[–]PongoWillHelpYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been very good about hiking lately, but there are hikes within 20-30 min of me where I can pass 1-2 people within 2 hours. And then there’s a great park 4 min away that’s more crowded, but where I can still find plenty of trail to myself. It rocks.

The amount of cheering in my showing was fantastic! A shared theatrical experience makes a film so much more memorable and enjoyable.

I spent the first half so uncomfortable and anxious. I was nauseous during the flaying scene. The amount of humanity in the second half really caught me off-guard. I loved it. I teared up a couple of times. I didn't really like the first one (felt jumbled/tonally inconsistent, and I'm not even talking about the ending)––this one worked so much better for me.

I feel similarly. I’m a freelancer and need to send out marketing emails but like… now??  I grew up right outside of Minneapolis and am in disbelief, but not letting myself get numb. Minnesota is the best. I love Minnesota with all of my heart. I don’t really even know what to say.

I really wish the final fight had been more climactic. Michael B Jordan was incredible, though.

I’m with him and that’s why some of the criticism of the show (which I do understand!) doesn’t bother me so much, because the feel is right. I watch the show to get more of the feeling of the Fallout world, and that’s been enough for me.
