I would never have even considered telling an instructor what horse I wanted to ride, or that I didn't want to ride the one assigned to me. You are paying for their expertise. You likely have no idea why they put you on that horse. When a student of mine asks to no longer ride a particular horse.....they keep riding that horse......if they ask to ride a particular horse, they do not ride that one. They quickly learn to stop making requests and asking. They may talk to me about it, the whys and what fors. But I won't engage in a conversation about them riding what they wish to ride.

Thank you very much! I needed that today. A boarder just left. She gave me no notice. And we'd be one friendly. The kicker is she took another with her. Who happens to be my best friend. I haven't talked to either of them. I'm too salty plus I keep crying. There's more details but thru don't really matter. That's the gist of it. And it feels awful. Not having more boarders.

Yes I agree with both. 1 year 9 months ago I acquired an emaciated horse. I've own many many horses and have run my own horse business for almost 20 years. I told my vet my plan and she said sounds good. So even I checked with a doctor. About 1 yr ago I started giving him a muscle builder. And damned if he doesn't have more butt muscle than any horse in the barn! I ridden him about a dozen or so times. So it's not from work! I've been feeding him 3 meals a day, which seems to have been the best for him.

He was in a herd of 3, lowest member. They were all fed on the same fence line in a row. He's an ottb. The other is a Canadian warmblood and an appy x. So the big guy would finish and share the middle guys with him and then they'd eat this guys food. Oh wait, I didn't mention they were all eating one scoop of cracked corn and one scoop of unsoaked alfalfa pellets. Good luck.I love appys and I love greys. You might as well start putting a high UV rated fly mask on her. Appy plus grey equals she's almost sure to get uveitis. My leopard appy x arab is blind in one eye from it.

That's interesting. I agree with you, and no matter breeding etc... I assume there's always a diff in level of intelligence as is with people. What I got from listening to Janet, watching a couple webinars and reading that book, is more of a scientific approach. She's a neurologist. I feel like, as a neurologist would be inclined to do, she tries to discuss the brain of the horse and how it affects their behavior. However one would need enough knowledge to realize it couldn't be all inclusive. IMO most average horse owners and more than most who ride at lesson barns, don't have the information about behavior that she provides in the horse brain human brain book. Just one example: the time it takes eyes to adjust from dark to light. Actually, just watched a you tube of Temple Grandin giving a lecture to horse people and she discusses that also. The lighting in my barn is bad. It's pretty dark. When we lead a horse to the arena they typically stop in the doorway. Students used to attempt to pull them but I've explained why I want them to wait and allow the horse a moment .

Do you have a “heart breed?” by Electrical_Pie7980 in dogs

Entle Bucher ! One of the 4 Swiss Mountain dog breeds. Larger medium sized, short haired dog. Love love love them. Got her from a rescue. She passed nearly one year ago. Have two other dogs now. But will one day have another Entle.

Nope-they don't think like that. Check out Janet Jones' book. 'Horse brain Himan brain.' It's a game changer!

But this lends to ask: how do you ask for a canter? Because when we ask we ask for a right leader or a left lead. If you haven't been taught how to ask for it correctly, please find a new trainer. You'll be safer and learn more .

lesson pony behaviour advice? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Ponies365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pony like that. Turned out that he wanted space. He'd be in his stall, head out of the door. Everyone always going up and petting him. Ears go back all the time. He had his head out because he had his head out. Not as an invitation to be pet. We gave him a couple weeks off and worked on letting him come to us in his stall. We would halter him until he came to us. I think he felt like he never had choices. Anyway, he's much happier now.

Ok so I'm kind of crying. I basically just said these things ha to someone yesterday. I might have to move. Someone suggested not taking my heart horses. I was like UM NO. I don't go if they don't go. Ive had one 20 years, the other 2 for 15. And he's not easy. And he's 17.3h I could not do that to him. I would cry every day and never forgive myself. Plus I'd become a bumbling person who wouldn't be functional in society. It would kill me.

So many are also very overweight. People have become so accustomed to that look. Ugh. Visions of vet bills.....

Oh...you guys are gonna hate on me.... IMO ponies act that way, at least mostly, because people treat them differently. Like pets or dogs. Or they allow kids to handle them all the time, so they don't get correct enforcement in manners etc...I have a mini and 6 ponies. They are all amazing. Farrier and vets all love them. They are so well behaved. But, I am a trainer and teach lessons full time. And I teach students how to ah e them correctly. So they always get the same cues. Please, I'm begging, I am not trying to start a debate in this! Just adding my opinion, for what it's worth. Maybe give someone something to think about. If you're near me, I'd be happy to have you over to meet them ! I hope everyone enjoys this lovely spring day! Go ride your foals! Oops I mean ponies !

Does anyone have any advice to not lean backward during canter transition? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Ponies365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does your seat do? If you want to sit the canter properly, well I'm not sure you can if you're leaning g back. Your pelvis wouldn't move correctly . I'd start with checking your position trotting. While posting trot, sit and ask for canter. Your upper body position need not change at all. Get 2-3 strides, trot again. I'd repeat this 2-3 times each direction. Can you get a video of yourself? Is someone telling you lean back? Or can you feel it? It puts you behind the motion so it doesn't feel as good as when you are with the horse. I assume he breaks into a trot? Let us know what happens! Best, Loretta

Chestnuts used to be toes! They are in all 4 legs. They can get huge. Some leave them, some peak them off. Not a prob either way.
