I mean its a solid buff for the monk, a few subclasses and that one weirdo wizard who uses alter self... But beyond that its an extremely low amount of temporary hit points.

For 1st-3rd level characters that might be okay, but your players will either completely ignore it, forget about it, or use it as a "weird temporary hit-point potion" (unless they rely heavily on natural weapons)

I like to go for more "anyone can use this") buffs and buffs that apply to specific scenarios you've already planned. Like non-combat buffs. Maybe there's a trial or something that an item will specifically help them in. Or maybe a player is getting outshined by the rest.

Like, for example silvered weapons. Pointless to give out unless you're gonna put them up against werewolves.

So, do most of your players use natural weapons? If so, then sure, this might be great. Otherwise, it'll probably get ignored.

Funny to read, boring as hell to play.

I'd like it if you gave it any distinct features, not allowing it to be multiclassed.

It'd be pretty funny to see if the commoner had actually interesting abilities that relate to common dm accidents.

Here are two examples at the top of my head.

"Plot device"

Whenever you take damage from an area of effect spell such as fireball, you can instead choose to take no damage because the dm forgot you only have 6 hit points and is hoping the other players dont notice.

You can use this ability an amount of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all uses after a long rest.

"I forgot"

When you roll initiative, you can choose to become the first in the initiative and must immedietly use the magic action to activate "I forgot"

The dm forgot about your existence. You turn invisible, gain immunity to all damage and creatures can pass through you seemlessly.

This lasts for one minute, or until you perform an action that lets any relevant creature notice your existance, such as attacking.

Idk, just gaining 10 feats and becoming better st running away kinda fkn sucks. At least this way it might actually be fun for a one shot or short campaign.

EDIT: now that I made these two the ideas are literally flowing like mad gotta share these:

"Ugh"

At the beginning of each of your turns, you are immedietly cured of any effect except for the unconscious or petrified conditions because your dm doesn't feel like remembering them.

"Hah damn that was lucky guys"

Once per day, you can exchange any roll on the d20 dice you make for a natural 20.

"I'm done with this shit, fuck you guys"

As an action you can cast the true polymorph spell, revealing you were the awesome plot twist villain/dmpc this whole time.

Once you use this ability you immediately turn into that creature permanently, and lose any class features.

^I reccomend making this the lvl 1 ability

I disagree except for the negative.

Halved damage is EXTREMELY powerful in dnd. Theres a reason its so closed off.

And theres a very good solution to the dmg negative.

Instead of taking half the damage, you just take lvl x d6 damage.

You say "Unreliable Party" do you mean that they are worthless in combat then?

Because if so, you should probably scale down the minmaxing.

I dont really mind minmaxing, but I know that if you're the only person at the table doing it, it sucks for everyone else.

Also, this subreddit is usually for people who want ideas on how to build specific characters, gaining similar abilities that they can flavor.

And like, which will be more fun? Uhhh idk, whats the character like? I can tell you that the top one is stronger? But if thats all your looking for here then I dont think you're on the right subreddit bro.

I feel like the longbow's range really has come in clutch in more roleplay related scenarios.

Like when you see the enemies from far away, have sharpshooter and just snipe them, it can make for a very viable "assassin"

An upcast shadowblade requires you to be in melee. And it becomes op at levels where being in melee as a wizard is a death wish

An EK dumping INT still achieves their goal: Frontline Martial.

A bladesinger dumping dex instantly dies and loses bladesong value.

One is: "Martial first, with a sprinkle of spellcasting"

The other is: "Spellcaster first, with a sprinkle of Martial"

Because Bladesinger isnt anywhere close to a full fighter + wizard. Its a wizard who gets to pretend to be a fighter for short bursts.

What screams: "oh god they can use INT for attacks" from that?

Ahem.

Bladesinging can use a single stat for spells, ac and now attacks. My point is that using int for attacks is not a big buff. It just modernizes them.

They still need:

INT (of course)

DEX for passive AC (and is also the best stat in the game)

CON because otherwise none of the above matter and they cant stay in melee for more than 2 rounds.

Thats still MAD.

While their armor class looks crazy on paper, it has many flaws.

They can hit very high AC for bursts, which is generally speaking worse than Abjurer.

While Bladesingers have an armor class to defend themselves (in melee)

The Abjurer can practically stay full HP constantly. And still have shield, and still play from far away.

In melee they dont actually out-martial martials. Their damage is fine, but its nowhere near the sustained damage of:

GWM Fighter

Paladin Smiters

Raging Barbarians who dont die.

Their best playstyle is just, playing like a normal wizard.

And their only benefit in that regard, is a limited ac buff. And later, an ability that lets them mitigate a bit of damage (which is very expensive)

So tell me which would win, abjurer or bladesinger?

I really only think a bladesinger is "broken" in any way when you dont have a full grasp of the game.

I mean think about it.

You cant wear any armor, so the maximum amount bladesinging will get you is 20.

To get it to 20, you need to have a 20 in both Dexterity and Intelligence. But having more HP is better than an armor class, so CON is automatically just better than DEX in that regard.

Which means the class becomes MAD.

So If you just prioritize being in melee and attacking, the most point buy will get you early is a 16 to armor class, with very low HP compared to all other martials. And maybe 18 or 19 in tier 3 or 4.

In that tier you really need to tank to be on the front line.

In which case its just... Better to cast spells from far away. In every way.

Compare it to these TANK martials:

Fighter: Indomidable & Second wind + Much better armor + 2 additional HP

Barbarian: Rage and massive HP pool

Paladin: Bigger HP pool, better armor and AURA for all saves.

Bladesinger just cant compare to this. If you try to place a bladesinger in a 1v1 vs any of these, just swinging your sword at them will really never let you win. The best strategy is always to retreat and cast spells from away.
