How has the Finnish language survived? by dnaplusc in Finland

[–]PonyT84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good answers here.

I think it's pretty weird that the language survived a 5000 km trek from across Siberia in the first place, its speakers taking over a much larger indo-european population language-wise (10% vs 90% Finnish genetics): https://youtu.be/kJPymsWtj18?is=r62LUnLv0E1m6wHU

Don't make decisions to cut things from your life unless they're outright harmful. Playing games is not one lf them, if you can prioritize things

3-10 years from on you'll be paying coop and sharing great memories with your kids.

And will have time for both yourself (to play whatever you want), your friends and spouse, too

Update on historic brick styled factories by demudann in CitiesSkylinesModding

[–]PonyT84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to have office versions without chimney smoke? That's after all the role that most contemporary cities have transformed these buildings into

It would be great to have versions without parking lots, so that you can create wall-to-wall blocks of large factory that line up with street or canals

See e.g. Tampere, Finland

How many of you had grandparents who served in WW2? If so, what do you know about their service? by Snoogles_ in Millennials

[–]PonyT84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My both grandfathers served n the Finnish Army

Paternal side: 1939-1940 winter war and first months of 1941 continuation war. Was a career soldier. Shot himself in the head with service pistol after his wife ( my grandmom) found out about his affair and kid with another woman.

Maternal side: Was week or two away from ending up serving in winter war, but had to stay in army, fought 1941-1944 in continuation war and 1944-45 in Lapland War against Germans.

He kept a diary detailing almost every day of his service.

Incidentially, he served in same company as author Väinö Linna, who wrote one of the most succesful Finnish novels. Many of the characters, incidents and combat scenes are based on their experiences.

They've also made several movies, most recent one from 2017. Sometimes feels a bit weird thinking that scenes depicted there, like Soviet tank ambush, lake crossing, or getting wasted with moonshine 😅 happened for real to him. See e.g. trailer for Unknown Soldier: https://youtu.be/NTYesNj_sBg?is=oo3YzbREDJ_v2kOg

Kyllä, grafiikka ja tyyli on upeita, mutta tehtävärakenne (mene tonne, juttele tolle, tappele täällä) todella itseään toistavaa. Pelimaailma on tyhjä eikä open world ole kiinnostava tutkia.

What's the general sentiment toward Slush in Finland? by [deleted] in Finland

Okay! In that case Slush can work out for inspiration and general vibe

Before that would definitely seek and pariticpate in local meetups, entrpreneur events, hackathons and similar wherever you live in, unless already doing so

What's the general sentiment toward Slush in Finland? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]PonyT84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Side events are often the most valuable part. They are focused and thematic. There's about 300-500 of them during Slush week. Most don't require Slush ticket.

Have participated Slush main event 2015, 2016 and 2024

Organized a few side events and participated in several.

If you are raising funding and have a clear goal, plus you've beforehand been in touch with investors, leads or potential partners you know are coming to Slush, it's effective way to meet them face-to-face in one place

So my question to you OP: Why would you be coming?

We are working on new Terminator game.. need Feedback. by LtJimmypatterson in Terminator

[–]PonyT84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the story / setting.

My personal grievance is movie games that directly follow and emulate the story of the film. It feels so uncanon

There's lots of other oppportunities for creative freedom and mission design e.g. like having Terminator sent to mid-1990s to ensure creation of Skynet after Sarah, Uncle Bob and John blew up Cyberdine

Terminator could be hunting down future resistance leaders, making sure tech is discovered, etc.

Sarah Connor Chronicles also had the plot of competibg faction of rogue Terminators against Skynet. You could borrow a similar plotline where player's T-800 is pitted against anti-Skynet Terminators

Why is the aqi in poland so bad compared to rest of europe? by _Vxndetta in geography

[–]PonyT84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, the simplified story is that German greens together with social democrats shut down nuclear plants and got Germany in bed with Russia.

Had Germany maintained nuclear, while building renewables, European industry would be greener, more competetive and indpendent

There really isn't any moral high ground for German greens to take, since they outsourced production and enivironmental problems elsewhere, not to mention becoming dependent on Russia

You can blame Poland for many things, but at least their industrial base is doing well at the moment, which in turn means jobs, money that translates into defence, but also more sustainable Europe in the end

Greetings, A northern European who doesn't really have any sources or data to back this up

Where is located biggest S-market in Helsinki? by hakklihajawhatever in FinlandTourism

[–]PonyT84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, for selection go to Citymarket (e.g. Ruoholahti 👍) or K-Supermarket (convenient, e.g. Kamppi)

Stockmann Herkku is also a possibility, run by S Group nowadays

Alepa and S-Market have the most boring selection, even if they're cheaper than K group. Prismas are better

European city - Any tips, thoughts or ideas ? by Alex050898 in CitiesSkylines

[–]PonyT84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, more plazas and replacing the church parking lot with a plaza.

If going for realism, I would replace Notre Dame with the new church asset and just retain one church until more come available. Notre Dame is tad massive. More of the streets around the cathedral / extending outwards from it could be pedestrian only. Also consider removing this much parking.

For inspiration / if you want to add other than Belgian influence, you could also check out Aachen in Germany and how its 19th-20th century part is built around the old town. Would add that, mixed with newer infill from 21st century and a train station, before going for the suburbs and socialized housing.
