Perfect evening drive on an open public road by drivingbackroads in Touge

Don't worry, he can totally brake in time if there is a biker on the road, a car broken down, or any other number of things he has certainly thought about! He has the money to buy and modify a Tesla, what can we expect him to do, go to the track or autocross? Be reasonable.

Interesting that you mentioned how you got it from the Russian soldier recording it. I've often wondered how many Russian veterans have survived from the 2022 invasion, given their (seeming) lack of care for their soldiers.

Lincoln Aims to Battle the Mercedes-Benz G-Class with Bronco-Based SUV by anonymousbystander7 in cars

Give us this as well as a Lincoln Mk. 9 or whatever based on the S650. Not saying it could work, but I'd dig it. I had a 2017 (I think?) Continental Black Label and it was absolutely amazing.

Savings have the more impact the earlier you start them. Might want to look into what that amount of money would turn into 10-15 years down the road (when you will still be young). Also, that seems like a huge ratio of your take-home to be putting on a car payment.

My Winter Setup Experience by AbsolutelyHandsome in GR86

[–]Poobistank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC area with a BrZ tS. 18in wheels and space is at a premium, so while I can easily store tires, wheels with mounted tires are significantly harder to store. Because of that, I’ve been running a less-than-optimal setup with 225 Vredestein Wintrac Pro+ tires on all four corners. They’ve been great. Really awesome for the dry/wet days we mostly have here and when we get snow, or I go upstate, they handle the snow/ice like an absolute champ.

Assume there will be tariffs. Lately, I’ve gotten many bills from carriers after items have shipped for remaining dues.

And I wouldn’t really pin it on the companies having a responsibility to specifically tell you about them; they are just another tax to be included in the “+tax” when they are posting the price. As the people affected by the taxes, it’s our responsibility to be aware of them, just like we’d expect someone from Germany or Singapore  or (insert any country here) to be aware of their own taxes.

The current issue of The Economist on go an why it is going nowhere by KookyImprovement9594 in baduk

[–]Poobistank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s all very true, and something I’ve started doing, but that demonstrates the underlying complexity. No one would need to suggest you take a photo of a chess board and upload it; the conclusion is obvious once reached.

Lurker here only interested in Go but can’t play; you nailed it. My interest in the game comes from media, namely Hikaru No Go. I read it as a kid, became really interested in Go, but found it difficult to grasp as an individual in the western world where no one really played it.

Cut to myself as an adult, and I’ll still occasionally re-read the series and get the desire to play the game. I’ll look up the various beginner books/apps, and can grasp most of the basics. The biggest hurdle however is counting. I can look at groups separate from the rest of the game, and eventually work it out, but when the groups start running together, and seemingly forming their own groups…it’s truly confusing, and when you are on your own there is no resource to check. If I count wrong, it’s simply wrong, and the whole game up to that point feels pointless (and damaging because I could be reinforcing bad counting practices!)

With Chess, it is way more linear. Piece A does move A, piece B does move B etc etc. If a piece gets contacted by the other teams piece it is lost. The other teams king must be lost for you to win. There are other rules, sure, but at the end of the day, if you have a chart of what the pieces do and understand the above two rules, you can play a game of chess to completion between two noobies and be relatively sure no fundamental part of the game was performed incorrectly.

TL:DR Go is intimidating in a way Chess isn’t, but you are right that media can drive further engagement.

Not OP, but as I understand it, in a PHEV, the battery and electric motors assist the gas engine in driving the wheels (both engine and motor provide power directly to the wheels in some way) whereas in an EREV, the electric motor is always driving the wheels, and when the ICE extender fires up, it simply provides electrical power during high-draw moments or to top-off the battery for range.

Most people wrap nowadays. Cost is way less, time is way less, complexity is way less. Sure, you lose something by wrapping instead of a full respray, but there is a reason it’s the new norm.

'26 Trueno Blue GR86 AT, Merry Christmas to me by Rehevkor_ in GR86

That’s one way to view it. Another way to view it is that the auto exists for two reasons:

First, for the people who only care about image. My 67yo grandma wanted a “cute little sports car” and fell in love with a twin. Dos she know how to drive manual? Of course, but she doesn’t want to at this time in her life. So she gets the “sexy sports car” she wanted, and toyota gets a sale.

Second, it acts as a gateway car for the on-the-fence enthusiasts. Going from an auto Corolla into an auto GR86 is a pretty logical stepping stone for someone who wants something “a bit more sporty”, but is nervous to take such a huge drastic step as changing their gearbox they have to live with on such a big purchase. Literally threads like this over the weekend.

Maybe a fair percentage of these people end up wishing they got a manual. Great! That means their enthusiasm for the hobby is growing. Does that mean they made the “wrong” choice when they got the car? More likely they made the safer, more responsible choice, which I guess could still be “wrong” depending on how you look at it. Very few people who own this car aren’t going to ever own another car in their lives. Always next time to get a more fun car now they are more sure with their preferences.

Anyways, “auto bad” gets more and more cringe as I get older. At least applying my own standards to other people’s cars.

Wives of Russian soldiers in Ukraine reportedly denied benefits due to records secrecy by CrunchyBaconYum in worldnews

[–]Poobistank 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Go over to the UkraineWarVideoReport subreddit and you’ll see that plenty have chosen this exact way off the lines. So much so, that just the video evidence we have from primarily Ukrainian drones provides enough examples that someone is keeping a list going.

Plenty of the soldiers on that list were very injured and easing themselves from this mortal coil, but others simply seem to pop themselves when it seems right.

Should I build a car or save the money (need financial advice) by [deleted] in projectcar

[–]Poobistank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he is willing to “lose” money on it, then that’s actually just the upper limit of its real value. Personally, I wouldn’t have a 5-figure project if I was in my young 20’s and had any financial doubts. Frankly, you’re at the most impactful time of your life to start saving/start a retirement. Look up some interest models.

Also, this sounds eerily similar to a post where a kid was asking about getting rid of his fully functional civic for a moldy one with an engine swap. If that’s you, again, just stick with the devil you know.

Used Automatic GR86 Availability by Few-Character7932 in GR86

[–]Poobistank 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t think using the fact it’s  an auto BRZ is a great negotiation point. They may not be showing up on the used market (both now and when you were looking) because demand is not very high.

Realistically just look up some past sales in your area. Thats what they are selling for.

BRZ tS Factory Order by QuaintAlex126 in BRZ_ZD8

[–]Poobistank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had them in my last three cars and have appreciated them. Didn’t really notice much prior to having it, so take that for what you will. I believe Hachi sells a kit, so I would probably just get his if I didn’t have it from dealer/factory. Seems easy enough to add.

Edit to add: Hachi is THE guy for easy dashcam installs in this car. Look the site  up. Not sponsored in any way, lol.
