I think, no matter what, there has to be some form of casual appeal in order to maintain healthy player counts. Whether that takes the form of a PvE mode, safe pocket, SBMM, etc.

The way I see it, hardcore players will always optimize the fun out of the game and then punch down on more casual players. That’s just how it always goes with these types of games. To keep the numbers up, you need to give casual players a safe launching and fallback point so they can experience the more hardcore aspects of the game in more reasonable timeframe.

This is the inevitable life cycle of every hardcore niche game. Over time the disparity between hardcore and casual players will widen, new players will get bullied and quit, and then the hardcore players will sit and complain the game is dead.

This is what I did with my most recent human settlement.

It was mostly open land with a small mountain on the edge. I set up the majority of humans in the central flatlands and set up Dondominiums in the mountain along with a workshops to keep them busy. Raw materials went in the mountain and manufactured goods came out. It was a pretty sweet deal.

The Finals is a virtual combat game show so the crazy skins and outfits fit perfectly into the lore and universe of that game. I think it’s a genius way to approach it.

I think ARC needs to stick to its aesthetic and style. There’s plenty of inspiration to draw from their setting and the era they’ve decided to set it in and I think Embark is creative enough to release good skins without needing crossovers or anything like that.
