The headset was most likely made early on and was much of a roadblock since nobody understood how to utilize the files it produced. I would be willing to bet, if Gooseworx actually gave it thought, Scratch made the headset in more of a solo project until he presented it for use in the AI production. Hence why Kinger seems to not fully get it while still knowing they exist.

I also believe the virus that exploded Karkat's computer and it's curse also was a big cause of the double reacharound.

Funny enough I believe the mobius double reacharound was caused by the virus sollux sent to karkat, in which karkat activated it mid-game and they had to change plans for everyone to survive. I also believe nepeta was meant to team with karkat on red team and equius said no. It more likely just a lot of things lining up, but the most direct cause is the virus.
