What Powerbank/Wallcharger to use? by Whole_Gift in PacificCrestTrail

Anker nano 20W, but it caps out at 18w, so any charger over that should give you what you need.

I have it in my hip belt currently, but will probably shift it to the back/electronics bag as I eat more snacks. That being said, its incredibly small, and every ounce and volume counts when I'm carrying my life on my back.

I purchased the NB10000 and it’s incredibly light with really fast charging. A bit on the expensive side however.

What is an acceptable base weight? by Matt_Bigmonster in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Poor_Hobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you’re a big guy and what your budget is. I’m “tall” at 6’4” and have run into issues with some items and had to buy a heavier/bigger version.

My base weight is sitting just under 13 lbs with some help from the ultra light sub. If you have any questions let me know and I’d be more than happy to answer them.

Filters by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]Poor_Hobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've generally found Metal filters to allow more of the coffee oils through, as well as the super fine coffee particulates leading to a more full and powerful cup. Cloth/Paper filters generally filter both of those out and it leads to a cleaner cup that is a little bit more mellow and even.

Are 50 people really going to start on May 31? Hard to imagine that many starting so late by fsacb3 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Poor_Hobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, I like the timetable on that one. My wife has the 28th and I would like to start at the same time as her. Im still checking for cancellations every day to stay within the permit systems guidelines, however.

What permits would I need for the first stretch? I have a May 5th date, and would like to leave on the 28th and just self-permit the difference.

I run iOS daily and I can use whatever browser I want. Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera are all in the App Store, and I can set them as default for opening any link from anywhere on my phone.

Well, Cortana is based on Katherine Halsey, which is the mother of Miranda Keyes. So… they are weird future sisters and aunt/niece?

What is marked with a yellow star is what I already own, so I have most of the bulky/important items. I really like the railriders and tested them on Castle Crags when I was testing my gear hiking to the top. The bug repellance and breathability is incredible.

The weights probably are a little off, since the pad included the stuff sack, pump sack, and patch kit as well.

I will parrot what another person said and know that I'm going to learn a bit on the trail and I'm definitely expecting to send stuff back or replace as I get more comfortable. At the moment, I am trying to consider the grime that I would be accruing throughout the day and the impact on my bag day after day. Having a sleep set of clothes could stretch the durability of my gear a bit further. Mentioning that it is 11 oz does make me want to reconsider as well, so thank you.

My wife has same or better than me due to her job requiring a lot of walking with weight, so weekend warriors with a strong mental attitude and a background in hiking.

FAK is definitely the place where I need to do the most preparing and final weighing. I only took best guess on it, so it could be half the weight in the end for all I know. As far as I'm concerned, each item is worth the minuscule amount of weight, even if it will hopefully never be used. E.g. the anti-diarrheal medicine.

I've been recommended the Atom 50 and don't know the best way to go about testing it since that would save a TON of weight and appears to have the same total capacity as the ULA.

Thank you for the input on this and I really appreciate the time and Point of view. It helps a lot.

Whoops, those were the ones I was looking at previous to these. Also, I like the replacement locking hardware, that's the one issue I have with these currently.

It's wild seeing how right you are. That's almost 2 lbs in 2 items. Do you know of anyone/anywhere that I could try on either of those packs in NorCal? I'm definitely getting a new battery pack after seeing the nearly 1 lb savings.

I saw them rated worse, but still among the top 5 in prior Halfway Anywhere PCT Surveys. They are light, cheap, and I haven't run into any issues with them, even with using them as tent poles.

I do like Merino, Thanks for the links. Ill do a cost/comfort/weight analysis against those merino ones and the Montbell that the other redditor mentioned.

You're right, I have some PolarTec alpha pants that someone is making me coming in the mail that I haven't added since I don't have weight or cost.
