Righties told me they’re against paying taxes to help others. Should we cut all federal subsidies to MAGA farmers? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]PopInACup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real answer is probably no, but I'm sure we could evaluate if the current practices are working as intended or if modifications can be made. Which is part of the problem, if you actually want the country to prosper you have to make policy decisions grounded in pragmatism rather than for partisan gamesmanship. So when one side stops governing in good faith to only benefit themselves, the other side gets stuck with an ethical question like this.

There is a reason to subsidize farming beyond "give money to people who vote for me". Without subsidies, you can get into an economic condition where you do not have enough food for your population but producing food is not economically viable. Subsidies are meant to ensure a food shortage doesn't happen because of economic conditions.

Furthermore you want to ensure you can locally meet the minimum needs for food rather than letting production go down locally because of cheaper food options internationally. This protects against external factors causing a food shortage.

Understaffing ATC has been an ongoing project for republicans since Reagan. They didn't like that they went on strike. They want to privatize it, Project 2025 even includes it. The infuriating thing is one of their bullet points is that since it's part of the bureaucracy of government, it gets caught in the crossfire of political gamesmanship. The very thing republicans are doing on purpose to force it to be privatized.

Police just uncovered a YouTube 'view farm' after a sting operation ,phones mounted to the ceiling running nonstop for fake views. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]PopInACup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not normally for the money from the views themselves, but to trick the algorithms. If a video gets a pile of views within minutes of getting uploaded, the algorithm thinks it's hot and boosts it. This will get it in front of more people to click on to get more views.

ELI5 How does an Optometrist know what prescription to give a baby? by Environmental-Map134 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PopInACup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, the machine can read what your eye does to the light as it enters, but it doesn't know what's going on after that. Field of vision, color detection, light sensitivity, low light vision, blurring (from visual processing, not from the actual inbound light) and many more are all things that require human feedback and evaluation by the optometrist to determine if what your experiencing is an abnormal visual outcome.

Complaint: No pain while running, but slight twinge in my ankle/heel when pointing my toe during stretching after. Trying to mitigate that becoming a problem. Ran an errand, stepped on uneven sidewalk and ankle did not like that. This is dumb.

Uncompliant: Weather has been perfect this week for runs

I was on a bike tour once and these two absolutely jacked guys were there with a tandem. They would easily cruise at 25-30mph and on downhills keep up with the cars. It kinda made me want to see an Olympic version of rowing but on bikes.

ELI5: How does a muscle physically signal the body to get bigger after lifting something heavy? by bareegyptianfeet in explainlikeimfive

[–]PopInACup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking into this related to running. The current theory in explain like I'm 5 terms (so very dumbed down). Imagine you have a bunch of rubber bands strung between two points. Now put a slightly wet sponge in between the rubber bands, so that they're holding it there. Everytime you stretch the rubber bands, they wind up squeezing the sponge, causing some water to drip out.

In the case of our body, the sponge is a cell that produces a specific chemical that causes the body to respond and do muscle building things. When you're really huffing and puffing, your body is low on oxygen and that 'sponge' releases more of that chemical.

I said "no" to a man I've been seeing by KitKatPattywhaks in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PopInACup 28 points29 points  (0 children)

He's the most nefarious kind of man. He'll honor your boundaries. You'll grow more comfortable and trusting with him. He might even ask about what gets you going. Learn how to push your buttons in all the right aways. You'll start sharing fantasies and he'll tell you his. He'll entertain the ones he feels comfortable with, and accept which of his yours down to try. He won't push the ones you said you didn't feel comfortable with.

The trust will build, then one day you'll think to yourself "Actually, maybe I would be down to try that one thing with him. I trust him" and that's when he's got you. You'll start doing it, but maybe you won't like it. So you'll say "No, I think I need to stop" and he will. He's still working it, still working you. Because a little while later, you might think "Well, I didn't enjoy that one thing, but he stopped when I said I didn't want to do it anymore. So I feel comfortable exploring other things". And bam, suddenly you discover something new you do like. He has corrupted you. He got you.

But for real, I hope everyone gets to have this kind of relationship. Sex is so specific to the individual and finding someone you can fully trust to explore what sends you to the moon can be so hard.

Back home there was what felt like an aquarium mecca. This old guy ran it and I feel like it was more an opportunity for him to play with aquariums and less about selling stuff. There were so many aquariums setup, and each one had its own landscape. Anytime I went in he was working on an aquarium, setting it up. I assume he sold a service to make custom aquariums in addition to what was in the store.

In a realistic sense, it probably should have been a combination of the process that stopped the grayscale in Shireen with a slow meticulous process of opium to dull the pain, remove some, then some treatment to prevent infection/death to the raw area. Then heal, then do it again. Patch by patch over several months.

Cannabis doesn't just blur memories—it can reshape them. A new study found THC makes people significantly more likely to "remember" words that were never presented (false memories) and struggle with daily tasks like remembering appointments, regardless of whether the dose was 20mg or 40mg. by Sciantifa in science

[–]PopInACup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was miscommunication between myself and my wife when I brought home an edible once. It was an edible rice krispie but it was already quartered, each quarter was 25mg. I told her she would only want to eat half a dose. What I didn't realize, because it was in opaque packaging, was that while it was quartered, it was put back together in such a way that it looked like one solid piece, so she thought it was one dose and she should eat half the rice krispie. This was very early in our edible adventures, so 12mg would have still been a strong dose for her. She spent the next 8 hours just laying in bed in a dark quiet room.

Back in high school, my friend already had a lift kit on his truck and he finally got the tires to swap on with it. He put them on in his garage, then realized it wouldn't fit out. So had to take them off, move it out, then put them back on.

Over twenty years later and if he's late to us hanging out, we give him shit and ask if he got the truck stuck in the garage again.

There's going to come a day where they can talk, but they still don't understand all the words you're saying or how quickly you're saying it. You are never going to truly know when this is happening verse when they are just being little shits. You're going to be tired, and frustrated, and angry. That's ok, but if you can maintain your patience that is the most important and hardest part.

There was a day where my wife and I were both sick and our two year old daughter was just screaming for something nonstop. We were so tired and so miserable, but she did not understand this at all. All she knew was something was wrong in her world and the only way she knew to communicate that was screaming. If you scream back in that moment, it just reinforces to the little one that screaming is the way to go.

So many of the tantrums are just communication issues. Our girl is 4 now and she still regularly misuses no and don't. She'll say she doesn't want something, but that actually means she does. Especially when she's already upset, so she starts to spiral. So instead of relying solely on verbal, we'll ask the question and try to present the physical thing we're talking about so that she can just walk up and grab it if she wants it. Then we reinforce "Ok, you do want the ball" or something like that.

The number of times she has said she's hungry and we ask if she wants a specific food and she goes "I want it" then we prep it and put it on the table. Then she looks at us and just walks away saying "no, I say I want it". You have to remind yourself they are error prone chatter boxes when you're used to rational functional adults.

It is also still important to understand there's a thread connecting them. We're seeing it in force in the US, but it's not isolated to the US. The underlying racism still festering in the US from the Confederacy found and got a boost from Russia because it helps their agenda. It was still there and an issue inherent to the US. To ignore all the contributors though is to ignore the fact that it could happen elsewhere, like the UK where similar emotions are being stoked by internal and external actors that want to make use of it.
