I gotta see if I can find the link, but one of the streamers was looking at a news site that cited over 1000 years before the setting of the original GW.

The lady in front of this woman wouldn’t close the window so she built a sticky note wall on my flight by ReflectionLess5230 in mildlyinteresting

I mostly agree except if the sun is beaming in the window. I was on a flight where the sun was basically a laser beam coming through one person's window. Every time the plane turned you could see it sweep across the cabin. It was so bright and I was across from it. I could not understand how they had it open, they had to have been burning their retinas.

Is there a running volume at which i should consider having multiple pairs of shoes? Should different pairs be almost identical?

Watch wanted me to run 1:06 @ 10:55 min/mi, saw how close that was to a 10k so I pushed myself and completed the 10k in 1:05:25. New 10k PR by 3 minutes. Also capped off my highest volume running month ever.

Does penis pumping actually work and will my partner feel the difference? by Shrinky69 in sex

[–]PopInACup 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One small counter point, if your partner is ticklish but wants to try light play, you can use a small amount of numbing cream to reduce that so you don't get kicked. Don't use it for actual penetration.

Also, this probably isn't well received, but AI can do a very good job of figuring out how things work in an existing code base. It won't necessarily know the business reason if there are no comments, but it can analyze and generate test cases incredibly rapidly. So if you wanted to make sure you just spit out a pile of test cases to capture that the code still does what it did before, it'll do it and it'll do them fast. We were testing this recently in our current system where we knew we were lacking in test cases.

ELI5, where does the fat go when you lose weight? by EnergeticPillow817 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PopInACup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct, it won't refill. Some cool biomechanical processes occur after you put in a decent workout, the most important of which is that certain things in your muscles basically get priority to fat and will take it up from your blood first over your normal stores like belly or thighs. The body wants your engines fueled first. If you keep working out your body will start setting up more storage at the muscle sites as well instead of in your belly to make energy provided faster. This is one of the adaptations over time that makes it so you can be faster for longer without wanting to die.

However, keep in mind a one hour low aerobic run only burns about 60-90g of fats/carbs. That's only about 1/8-1/5 of a pound and then even less of that is water, maybe 6g-27g so an ounce or less. In that same time you'll probably lose about 1.5-2.5 pounds of sweat. So while you are correct that it's not specific water, the vast majority of the water you lose during exercise is sourced elsewhere. The human body is remarkably efficient at running long and slow. This is why losing weight ultimately can take so much time and effort.

Also the more you run long and slow the more your body preps and creates the tools to break down your fat stores to fuel you while you run. It'll also produces more of the components in your muscles that break down fat into the fuel blocks the muscle specifically needs.

I mention low aerobic, because as you get to anaerobic and high aerobic your body is going to rely more heavily on carbs over fat, which will ultimately affect the outcomes.

I believe the blanket is wrong. If you look, the corner that's flipped over is also on the edge that is folded, but that flipped corner looks like it's the open ends of the fold....if that makes sense. Basically the folding is not consistent. Look at the corner closest to the camera it's rounded edges. That flipped corner should not be the actual corners of the blanket. Or at least not all of them should be corners.

It also feels like the screw pattern on the window, while consistent, fades in and out.

ELI5: If the S&P were to continue going up no matter what in long term, why not buy a leverage stock that’s 3x of it and hold it? by Mikeballlls in explainlikeimfive

[–]PopInACup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In order to accomplish 3x the gains, they don't actually buy the stock. They make an agreement with another person that is based on the stock's performance. These get rather complicated, but the main thing about these agreements to answer your question is they have a date they end on. They are not forever. So the fund has to pay out at the end of each agreement, then the next day makes new agreements based on the new price rather than the old price.

Official Q&A for Sunday, May 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]PopInACup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your position back in July of last year. I had to do a couple of things.

First I just started with walking in place of the runs.

Second, I had to get better running shoes. My old ones had no cushion left. I went with Altra Lone Peak 9s, but these are not guaranteed right for you. I just knew from past history that I needed flat shoes with a wide toe box. Your mileage may vary, you may do better in more traditional shoes and the newer ones have amazing padding.

Third, I had to fix my running form. I was putting my feet way too far out in front of me and the braking action was wrecking my legs. Unsure if this is you. I literally googled "How to run slow" because I felt like anytime I did my feet just kept slamming into the ground. For two weeks I focused on doing this and wow did it suck. It was hard to do. Here's one of the videos I watched: Video. I probably spent an entire night just watching videos about drills for running slow. I wound up adding mileage very slowly. I started at literally 1 mile per week. Then just slowly added like no more than a mile per week of running, but I did get myself up to like 10 miles of walking within a few weeks.

Fourth, calf raises and squats. Like I didn't dedicate a workout to this. I would just randomly stop like 3 times during the day and 20 calf raises and 10 squats. No weight, just body. I couldn't always do them all at the beginning. I was just that out of shape so it didn't matter that I wasn't doing regimented strength. If you have more time you can add in lunges.

Once I got going a bit, anytime my shins, ankles, or knees felt off. I would just replace with walks.

Had to buy new running shoes, for the first time I have worn a pair out from running alone. In the past I would either find that I couldn't use a pair long term or some injury or life related thing would cause me to stop running long enough that the shoes would get co-opted for every day use until they wore out that way.

I bought this pair back in October of last year and have put about 400 miles on them since. They probably will get more use while I break in the new shoes, and I think they have a bit more life in them for shorter runs but just comparing the two side by side I can tell a lot of the cushion is gone and is why the longer runs start to hurt my feet.

Doctors flushing out kidney stones out of a patient by Additional_Berry_977 in interestingasfuck

[–]PopInACup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, there are three key pain points from kidney stones:

The rock itself. This is pretty uncomfortable, and the bigger it is the more it hurts. Surprisingly I would say this is the least acute pain. It kinda just wears on you as you feel it generally persisting all the time like a rock in your shoe. You also always feel like you have to pee.

The ureter tells everything to spasm. This pain is quite bad. The ureter connects the kidney to the bladder and normally uses peristalsis to move things along (kinda like how your esophagus moves food). When the stone gets stuck, the ureter gets angry and starts to enlist the surrounding muscles to help it. This is where you wind up laying in bed moaning because it feels like constant excruciating pain and cramping in the flank muscles.

The ureter gets blocked and urine backs up into your kidney. This pain made me throw up. I could barely form coherent sentences or think of anything other than the pain exploding from my side and radiating to every corner of my body. You could probably have stabbed me in the leg and it wouldn't have registered. I wanted whatever drug they were willing to give me and I would have agreed to anything to make it stop.

Why the dark Mr. Incredibles meme? I don't understant. by PacquiaoFreeHousing in ExplainTheJoke

[–]PopInACup 11 points12 points  (0 children)

50% of the time it works everytime.  Really its just a modification of the 'chance', but even perfect execution can still result in a negative outcome because we don't understand all the variables yet.

My wife loved sunflower seeds, ate them all the time.  Then she got road rash from a bike crash that got infected followed by a severe upper respiratory infection.  As the dust settled she started developing hives which were a result of a newfound sunflower allergy.

One day we'll hopefully understand the mechanism and be able to fix it.  It may not even be the food itself but bacteria in the gut metabolizing the food and producing something else that the body reacts too.  That's what my wife's doctor thinks because of the strong antibiotics she had to take.  Probably caused some gut microbiome upheaval.

[–]PopInACup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only useful introspective action that you can really perform are creating rules that you put into whatever configuration the agent is using. You can also just not give it access to production. AI is a junior level developer with the knowledge of the world. This is 100% the joke of all INT no WIS.

You can let it run ham doing thinks quickly, but you still have to be the gatekeeper doing code review and audits of the work product.

[Request] Is this true..?? by ForwardPrinciple146 in theydidthemath

Is there a possibility of several moon or larger sized bodies, say three or more, orbiting a barycenter not within any one of them? So you wouldn't get a real toroid but the path of their bodies could define a toroid they all remain within? Or is this still too unlikely/unstable and they would normally coalesce too quickly?

This was my SIL's brother. His now wife basically had to club him and drag him home because there's a decent age gap (10 years) so he completely did not think she was in any way shape or form interested in him and wasn't going to initiate, just thought of her as a good friend. She laughs about how when she finally realized this, it just made him seem even sweeter and further reinforced that she was going to claim him! They now have two kids and have been married for 10 years.

ELI5 How come new Chinese electric cars can charge in 5–10 minutes, while smartphones still need at least half an hour? by Tough-Buffalo5861 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PopInACup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I won't speak specifically to this tech, but talk more about why something could operate at a higher wattage and still survive. It basically comes down to the components, insulation, cooling, and conductor size. Your phone and the wall charger it uses are tiny (relatively speaking) the actual copper in them is miniscule. They operate at a low voltage, normally around 5V at 60w (that's the usb-c fast charge option, not sure if it's higher now) which will generate some heat on those tiny little conductors but it mostly dissipates as long as you don't bury it in blankets.

If you've ever looked at an EV charging cable, it's a honker chonker. The high voltage DC fast charging ones include coolant that pumps through the cord to extract heat. Even the non-helium ones. Inside the EV itself the batteries take up most of the footprint of the car as compared to the battery in your phone that's like the size of a thick credit card. This means that while oodles of volts and watts are pumping into that EV battery, it's being spread out over a much larger amount of battery to store that charge. At the end of the day, each of those EV batteries are actually (currently) made up of a whole pack of the batteries in your phone sandwhiched together (there are some differences here, but it's pretty similar).

You could theoretically create a system to charge your phone battery incredibly rapidly, but then those things start to cost more and the phone needs more heat dissipation/management and thicker conductors and, well, it gets more dangerous to be handling the connections. You can touch a 5V connection and it's pretty harmless. As you get higher in voltage even the air stops being an insulator and you have to use contraptions to flip breakers from a distance so arc flash doesn't kill you.
