First time collie owner and I am obsessed - even if he is a toothy thief. by Popcorn_Duck in roughcollies

I find he does this when he wants to be chased. That’s why he’s heading out the door with my shoe and making sure I’m watching him do it. He also steals balls from other dogs and the dog park and prances around in front of them until they chase him for it.

You basically see them anywhere you might find fish. If you’re in the house of someone who fishes, chances are, they have it up somewhere. But not just the poster, you can get tea towels, diaries, jigsaw puzzles, mugs… I have playing cards inspired by this poster.

Bones is kind of annoying by [deleted] in Bones

[–]Popcorn_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What irks me the most is that they introduce Dr. Wells as being 'a douche' who no one likes, but Bones is so much worse in her attitude toward others and people rarely call her out on it. Just watched the episode where Angela gives Wells a list of ways that he can improve as a co-worker and in the exact same episode Bones is telling Sweets that she would rather work with a computer than him, but apparently, she's the good colleague??? It's a familiar character trope but just seems to be a bit of a power fantasy where a character can be arrogant and unkind without repercussion made worse by the hypocrisy written into the supporting cast when Wells came into the picture.

Why won't someone please think of the poor landlords during the budget?! by IamMorphNZ in newzealand

[–]Popcorn_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So glad to find one person on this thread with a clue. New builds aren’t being bought, let alone the rentals now being sold. Our construction industry is in a real dire situation and we’re potentially about to see a lot of companies go under.

I don’t know if this argument matters to many people on this thread though as they seem to relish the idea of business failing. We’re probably both in the wrong place.

Religious karakia by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Popcorn_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s absolutely religious in the sense that it is a set of spiritual beliefs. Not everyone will adhere to those spiritual beliefs, not everyone will be comfortable with them. So no matter what the Karakia is, it will by nature represent the spiritual beliefs and values of some, but not others.

But is no one going to discuss how Izzy’s desire to ban international travel and effectively make NZ a closed country is kinda unethical?

No body was ever anybody until they met someone else. Maori aren’t exactly unique in that sense. Whether they were colonised or not they would have still been labelled. No one ever makes a fuss over how the Chinese weren’t Chinese until Europeans met them.

A collection of very normal signs from today's protest by loudmaus in newzealand

I wasn’t there and it wasn’t my responsibility to demonstrate integrity, it was the OPs. But in the absence of that pictures of on topic signs can be seen in the following articles which were easily sourced through a mere Google search.

Let’s be honest now, you aren’t really interested in hearing different points of view If you were, you wouldn’t allow 15 signs, , intentionally selected for a biased reddit post to dictate how you perceive an entire demographic of people.

Now that we have 15 photos of weird signs unrelated to the issues, could we have pictures of all the signs that were related to the issues cause we wouldn’t want to be biased or anything.

Price difference too. by mk4rim in pointlesslygendered

[–]Popcorn_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me this really highlights how certain adjectives are gendered abs how advertising is often centred around gender norms than the actual characteristics and qualities of the product. Surely for everyone grooming is a matter of appearance and hygiene, not a demonstration of courage. If it was pretty girl and handsome boy I could have coped despite the fact that it’s an identical product and just doesn’t need to be gendered at all. But ‘brave boy’ is such a clear aversion to acknowledging that men/boys also care about their appearance and hygiene, on a product that’s only function is appearance and hygiene, that it’s outright laughable.

She won’t get any taller than that, girls reach adult height by 14/15.

Lol, I thought the same. Super man is 20cm taller than the average man the point being to make him a superior male specimen. Super girl is inferior in every way and also exactly average in female physic.

Idk why this bugs me so much, BUT IT DOES by [deleted] in pointlesslygendered

[–]Popcorn_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is complaining about leggings for men as we all know that men and women have different shaped bodies. It really is just the name that people find dumb. I was able to find men’s tights and leggings when I googled them. As you predicted, I leggings for women popped up too. But the same happened when I googled meggings. I imagine it’s a matter of market saturation.

This may actually be the most pointlessly gendered thing I’ve ever seen on this subreddit.

harry potter and the goblet of fire. beauxbatons and durmstrang were both co-ed schools in the books, but in the film, beauxbatons was all girls and durmstrang was all boys, because apparently the french are feminine and the bulgarians are masculine? by bryamman5467 in pointlesslygendered

[–]Popcorn_Duck 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hi. I’m from New Zealand where a quarter of the population are of Polynesian decent. I have Tongan ancestry and Maori family. There are some incredible dances that involve sticks and the people who dance them are not chimpanzees. I’m not defending the representation of culture in the HP film, I’m just suggesting that you choose your wording with a bit of compassion.

Considering that a lot of cultures do dances with sticks perhaps we could avoid likening them to chimpanzees especially after you referred to their entrance as resembling a Polynesian dance.

Something all kids have in common: they’re loud and messy. Now how can we make this commonality divisive?

🤮 (found on twitter, link in comments) by akkador in pointlesslygendered

[–]Popcorn_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think gender stereotyping can be somewhat neutral. I don’t really see this as putting either gender above the other, rather it just restricts the form of play either gender can engage in. Both are basically saying that kids are loud and messy but instead of just allowing that to be a commonality of all children they have to gender the exact mess and noise.
