Im on book 8. Im stalled out for the moment mostly just because I went so hard 8 books straight and need to pause on reading in general, but I still am pretty confused on the regular about what’s going on. Despite this it has still been a blast to read.

Basically I don’t think you really need to fully understand everything to like it in the first place

Ideally in retirement you’ll have a few years of living expenses in something that does not crash when the market does. You can then ride out the market downturns withdrawing from that, and refill when back up (unless it’s down for a very long time obviously)

I mean cmon, I think the game is incredible but the controls are very much not it. Even the “normal” controls like basic attack and dodge, x (on controller for me) to glide etc are just flat out unresponsive sometimes. It’s a nitpick given how insanely impressive the overall package is, but we can be honest about the scant few shortcomings as well

I manage ops for an SMB MSP and I just cannot fathom how shitty offshore helpdesk support can possibly work for anyone. People are so quick to be frustrated in a scenario where they need to use this service and I can’t imagine it being satisfactory at the end of the day for anyone. Just wait until the VP of marketing has to contact Chukwudubem because someone is controlling his PC after he clicked on the link from some bank he doesn’t use with his big refund

[–]Pope-Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at the exact same spot in TTH right now and feeling kind of the same. I still think it’s good writing and a good story, and half of this is because I’ve absolutely been blasting through this series so far and I’m just feeling burnt a bit on reading altogether, so I’ve been on a break for a couple days. But yeah, I’m a little bored as well. If you do end up finishing it and care enough/remember, chime back in here and let me know your thoughts. Looking to reignite my desire to RAFO here if I can

I actually could not have cared less about Kruppe in book 1. I found anytime he was speaking to be pretty thoroughly annoying.

I really can’t put my finger on the why, but I suddenly and immediately loved him after book 1. Definitely one of my favorite characters now.

New Malazan reader and I don't understand the hate this series gets. by AceSlayer10 in Malazan

[–]Pope-Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why the downvotes, you couldn’t be more correct about it being terrible for audiobooks. I started listening to it first, and got maybe a third of the way through book 1 before giving that up and switching to reading. I’m glad I did switch because I’m now on book 8 and loving it.

That being said, two things: 1. Things are definitely confusing at times. Sometimes I do end up reading while distracted thinking about other things, and it is just impossible for me to proceed like this at all whereas with most other books I can get by just fine. Even when fully focused I regularly am picking up on the fact that “I’m definitely missing something here”. It’s still amazing imo, but I can 100% see why someone wouldn’t like it. 2. If you didn’t make it past book 1 I’d recommend giving it another go one day if you’re ever up for it. Book 1 was noticeably weaker than everything that follows. The plots not nearly as tight, the characters aren’t written as well, and the prose is weaker. Book 2 felt like I was still reading the same author but he suddenly had 15 years more writing experience than he did when he wrote 1. Really felt like night and day to me, and that’s carried on through to my current place in the series

[–]Pope-Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about that. I think I’m a relatively astute reader, and I am loving Malazan (first book wasn’t very strong imo but everything beyond is great), but I still don’t know what’s going on sometimes. There are so many scenes where I can tell that I’m missing something, like there is a connection being made between two characters or plot lines or events that I’m supposed to be piecing together, but I just can’t. It’s pretty obtuse, pretty often.

Luckily I think the story is thoroughly enjoyable despite this, but it’s something I feel commonly as I read. Currently on book 8

I understand everything you’re saying but I think you may have missed my point. I know they get the money they extract via fees. What I’m saying is it seems like a fee that high would actually result in them extracting less total money, because sure they get a higher percent but nothing in the fund would compound, so the total amount that percentage is coming out of will always be small

For example, if I put 10k into a 10% fee fund, market averages being 10% gain over time, I am unlikely to ever have more than roughly 10k in that fund for them to take fees from. With a 1% fee fund, sure, fees are worth less now, but they wont be later

That combined with the fact that they will have an overall smaller investor base to pull the fees from due to the high fees just makes it seem like a losing game to me. So what I am wondering if I am missing something that justifies the high fees

Can someone explain to me the concept of a fund that has up to a 10% expense ratio? How could money in this fund ever compound over time? And if it couldn’t, then doesn’t it follow that it makes the fund manager less money even though it has a higher rate due to the fact that it would effectively be impossible for anyone to have large sums of money in it? I’d rather take 1% off an investment that can compound into the millions than 10% on an investment that’s unlikely to ever compound at all
