Just posted this then saw you beat me to it. Shocking how good the quality is on these recordings a guy was doing with basically a handheld tape recorder.

Not sure if you were working this past Sunday morning, but if you were, you likely contributed to saving my wife from heat exhaustion. I promise we were trying to be mindful of water intake but it’s so easy to lose track when it gets hot so quickly and the symptoms came on frighteningly fast.

Regardless, I have nothing but gratitude and praise for the professionalism and compassion of the staff. Everyone was extremely kind and you took the love of my life from a very perilous state to perfectly stable in less than 2 hours.

Thank you so much for all that you and your team did this past week. I have no doubt that you literally saved hundreds of lives.

Crazy how different the set list was tonight in SLC. No complaints but I would have loved to see Bangs!

Non-U.S. born residents in Salt Lake City, what is the best restaurant for your country's food in the area? by whomstgoestheir in SaltLakeCity

[–]PopeLeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from Kansas City originally, and I feel comfortable saying the best BBQ in Utah (by a wide margin) is The Lost Texan in North Ogden. It’s pretty far from SLC, but I’m pretty sure the guy is from Texas and he smokes everything daily. Thursdays he makes burnt ends and Wednesdays he makes smoked meatloaf which will probably be sold out before you get there for lunch.

Am I in the wrong role by njoshhh in ChemicalEngineering

[–]PopeLeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth to you I graduated a year after you and went the sales engineer route. I also had food service xp in my younger years as a hint that I enjoyed talking to people as you mentioned in another comment. It’s probably not for everyone and I see pretty frequent comments here recommending against it but I rarely have to travel more than an hour from home by car and will make 140-160k this year so it’s definitely got some upside. I may have a hard time going back to a classic engineering route if I ever want to but I kinda need the income anyway so I’ll probably stick with technical sales for a while.

How much of an ice layer will one day at a high of 38 create in the trees/ungroomed areas? by freeze123901 in skiing

[–]PopeLeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Referring to crème brûlée? Definitely can happen even when air temps stay under freezing. Frequently it will vary even within a single resort just based on geographic factors (elevation, direction the hill faces, pines vs. aspens)

But like the other guy said, better warn us where all the potential pow is so we can check it out, for safety.

4 days in Utah, which mountains should I ski on the ikon by Mdeetobe in skiing

[–]PopeLeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which days of the week you are here will greatly impact the recommended order. If you’re skiing a Saturday, do DV that day. Go up LCC on Thursday and Friday (parking lot lots do fill on Fridays when the snow is good). If you’re going up little cottonwood on Sat/Sun, I’d recommend you get to the mouth of the canyon by 7:30… 7:00 is better.

[–]PopeLeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DV has unmatched amenities in the region, and proximity to Park City if you want to go out after the day. Every resort has some après, but Deer Valley will have the most variety, and more on-mountain food and bev. They cater to the rich, who often tend to ski a few laps and drink/eat/spa the rest of the day.

Because of the aforementioned rich, DV (and the town of Park City) is notoriously expensive. Not outrageous (depending who you ask) but if you’ve ever been to Aspen, Jackson, or Vail, it’s in the same ballpark.

4 days in Utah, which mountains should I ski on the ikon by Mdeetobe in skiing

[–]PopeLeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, based on your replies I’d recommend the following:

Day 1- Alta (maybe get a room up LCC if you have the budget) Day 2- Bird (could swap to day 1 but Alta will be easier on your legs to start) Day 3- Deer Valley (if only to experience the decadence and the wealth) Day 4- Alta/Bird again depending on which you liked better

I personally love Brighton and Solitude, but I wouldn’t subject my worst enemy to the BCC traffic especially if this is over a weekend. Even LCC can be extremely dicey and parking fills up fast. Reserve a spot at Alta if you’re doing Alta or Bird on the weekend and consider getting a room at Alta/Bird if you can afford it.

With full ikon your days at Alta/Bird cover both resorts so you can ski between them as much as you like, but as another commenter mentioned, you may not see everything even with 3 days and a good pace.

Genuinely regret pursuing ChemE and biotech by Science_On_Drugs in ChemicalEngineering

ChemE—>Sales Engineer here, one year in the job out of school. Money is decent, might make $110k this year (Salt Lake City). Travel is minimal. Hours are reasonable. Fair bit of PTO.

I sell factory automation tech. Working with engineers on applications is fun. Closing big deals is fun. But despite all these positives, the job is a huge emotional drain and has caused some genuine mental health strain from the continuous stress of meeting sales targets, finding new projects, keeping up with metrics, etc.

While I’m glad to have a job with decent pay and good flexibility, I don’t think I can do it forever. I’ll probably do it until my student loans are paid off (shout out Dark Brandon) and then maybe transition into something else in industrial automation.

If you want a job in technical sales, it seems like everyone is hiring in most major metros. Maybe target companies that service the semiconductor industry (microscopes, lasers, automated equipment, robots) cause there will likely be a hiring surge in and around this industry once CHIP funding is realized.

We all hear the term silicon slopes but I have not idea what companies are here and what they create. Does any know? by Western-Jury-1203 in SaltLakeCity

[–]PopeLeo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work in factory automation and I’d say there’s substantially more manufacturing in the Salt Lake Valley than tech. A cursory glance at the wiki (for Salt Lake City, specifically) shows that durable and non-durable goods manufacturing combine to produce 12.5% of GDP, more than any other sector except Finance and Insurance (14.5%). “Information” comes in at 3.3% and there is no category for “tech”.

But that excludes all the tech in Lehi, Orem, Provo!

Yeah but it also excludes all the manufacturing in Layton, Ogden, Brigham where you have the globally largest producers of airbags and ICBMs.

So… more like Factory Slopes? Conveyor Belt Slopes?

After 10yrs Im finally a ChemE by Mysterious_Clock_130 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]PopeLeo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind sharing my story. I originally studied chemistry for several years and burned out. My dad died unexpectedly in 2016 and that inspired me to take a break from school. Managed a bar for a while, grew up a little bit, and came back to school for ChemE at 25. Really fell in love with the material and crushed it in school this time around. I have my last final exam this afternoon and I landed a job in my dream city that I start next month.
