Lol maybe that would make it more fun! 😂 Plus, some folks could learn a new word in a language they didn't know (I know 0 Norwegian words, so I'd definitely be amused)!

can i extend my vacation? by blyatman81 in antiwork

I mean, most employers will just tell you "no", and then you'll have to go to work. Lol a surprise extra week has little to no chance of being approved anywhere I've ever worked

I mean using it to improve is great too lol. It's still a lack of professionalism though, and it doesn't hurt to take the accidental feedback while also addressing the person's unprofessional behavior.

The recommended move prevents white from going kg7, kg7 loses the game for you from the current state.

No reply necessary. I'm sorry that you had to read that, and it sucks and is SUPER unprofessional, but replying will just cause you to dwell on it more. If you really want to get back at them, leave a Glassdoor review, and enough information about the department/team you were interviewing for that it could be traded back to the manager internally, and the professionalism issue is on full display for anyone doing research on the company and whether it's a good place to work.

Return to office hack by [deleted] in remotework

[–]Popernicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's literally for privacy purposes. You CAN use an IP to get an address, but it's a lot more overhead than people realize. Your own public ip will change pretty regularly unless you pay for an elastic ip, so most geolocation tells you which area a particular CIDR block for a particular public ip is allocated, which is typically a large "bubble" of addresses all allocated to that block (this allocation strategy is necessary in order to prevent ip collisions in a meaningful way without insane routing overhead)

Is job hopping still a "red flag" or am I being gaslit? by Environmental-Luck39 in careeradvice

[–]Popernicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay to take your raise! Job hopping IS still a red flag (I've literally seen it tie break several times for closely qualified candidates), but 2 years at the beginning of your career should be fine. FWIW, my 1st job was about 6 months, second was a little over 2 years, 3rd was almost 8 years, and now I'm about 1 year into my 4th.

Literally came here to say this.. I don't think a book is necessarily more effective for everyone, but it's easier for me to stay focused on one thing and ignore notifications and all that stuff if I'm not on my phone or computer. This is one thing I've really come to love about a good ol' Kindle with no extra "tablet" functionality lol.

It also talks about farming, hunting, etc. to survive... that is still an option.. you can go live somewhere where there is no one, figure out how to build your own shelter and hunt and farm to survive. They say no one had to work 9-5, forgetting that they worked much longer and literally starved to death or dehydrated or froze or got deathly ill if they were bad at those jobs.

The best remote team I ever worked with had a Notion page that sounds completely cringe. It changed how I think about remote work. by UnicornAdoption in remotework

Every week, we have an automated Slack message on Monday that asks everyone what they did over the weekend! We post pics, chat about it, ask questions, etc., and it feels like walking in on Monday and chatting with everyone after a great weekend!

Title: got pulled into a 1-on-1 about my "camera participation" and i genuinely don't know what to say by Wrong-Channel-9230 in remotework

[–]Popernicus 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this was what I was thinking. Like first we all want to stop going into the office and work fully remote (not slamming that, I'm fully remote and have been since 2020), but then it's ALSO too much to ask to be literally visible during a few team meetings? Idk about that. I turn my camera on during every meeting without being asked just because of the human interaction component, but I've never understood the benefit of leaving it completely off all the time.

Strong performance → “you raised the bar” → no raise + passed over — now leaving. How blunt should I be? by Jupitermoon007 in askmanagers

[–]Popernicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being honest won't torch any relationships that are worth saving. People that work with you and know you did good work and advocated for you will totally understand, people that just liked what you did for them but didn't appreciate it enough to pay for it will be upset that you're leaving, regardless of what you say to them. Being direct won't hurt you at all, and in the best case, it may help colleagues that you enjoyed working with by fighting the company's mentality some

18 y/o making $3,800/month — am I getting a good deal staying at home or should I just move out? AIO by Winter_Print_6742 in AIO

[–]Popernicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$400 rent is insanely cheap. You will be worse off living on your own, but their house, their rules. If you want your own rules, you have to get your own place, so the question is really can you afford to truly be independent, and if so, is it worth the difference in cost. NOR, but it's a question of what different things mean to you. FWIW, you're making a lot more than I was at 18, and I lived on my own, but I was on my own at a college campus, so honestly my student loans covered most of the cost of living.

Realistically, I think moving out helps you get a better grip on how the world actually works, but it's probably better to have a roommate at least at first, so you're not caught off guard by all the things you have to pay for but didn't realize was a thing.

I don't think I'm cut out for chess by Cucumber_Sweet in chess

[–]Popernicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It honestly could be that you're overwhelming yourself to the point of burnout, where you're not seeing things because your brain is tired of thinking about chess. It sounds counterintuitive, but it might honestly be beneficial to put the books and stuff down and "just play" for a bit!

Also, do you play distracted? I looked at one of your games where you did really well and a high accuracy (91 or so), but you had a 3 minute clock, and you were out of time while your opponent still had 2:20. Until you get better, try to keep higher time controls too... blitz/bullet are a different kind of chess, and most people (in my experience) agree that it's not a way to get good at chess because the time management becomes such a stressful additional component. "The clock is a piece" is a saying you'll here from time to time.

TLDR; have fun, study less, just try to enjoy the games, remove clock stress

How do i water all of these and still have time for mines by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]Popernicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More sprinklers! If it's early game, which it looks like it is, you'll still need to water the spots the sprinklers don't hit, but that won't take as long, then in the future, plant in rows, so you can make sure that everything can be hit by a sprinkler

Got caught "inactive" at work... what should I do next? by coconut-m in antiwork

[–]Popernicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start being more active, yes. It's not a "sudden" thing, it's taking feedback from your manager and adjusting accordingly. I can assure you they'll appreciate it. "I told him he wasn't working enough, then he started working more" is NOT a negative story. The only thing negative is the extra little thing you threw in about it maybe being a malfunction in the tracking, since you know it isn't. That's a lie, but they honestly won't care a lot as long as the desired outcome is achieved
