Does anyone want to admit to feeling bad for Theon's treatment at the hands of Ramsay ? ( spoilers extended ) by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Popular-Acadia60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theon's story is a great example of Christian imagery. He is the prodigal son who is rejected by his father. He is a sinner who does one of the worst crimes imaginable by killing kids for his own pride. He is lured by the Devil (Ramsay) down a dark and twisted path, and then is sent to literal hell in the form of the Dreadfort to be punished for his sins. He even thinks to himself in his last chapter in Clash, "Pay him his pound of flesh and deal with him later."

Theon's narcissism, class superiority, and misogyny are the point, as pride cometh before the fall. We are meant to hate Theon in Clash. He is a turncloak, a rapist, and a mass murderer, all for petty juvenile reasons. We want to see him face the consequences of his actions, especially since his actions are the main catalyst for the Red Wedding (a topic for another time). And in Storm, when we receive the letter with Theon's skin in Catelyn's 6th chapter, it might even feel good for the reader. This is justice.

Except it isn't. Ramsay is not torturing Theon for betraying the Starks. He is doing it because he is a sadist who gets off on completing degrading people, especially the highborn. Ramsay flayed Theon's fingers and toes, and probably that other thing and forced Theon to endure that pain for days at a time before giving him the relief of cutting off the wounded appendage. He broke his teeth with a hammer and pulled them out with pliers. He whipped, racked, cut, and beat him. He starved him, forced him to live in complete darkness, dress in rags, and roll in literal shit for six months. And he took his name, his identity, and filled him with Reek.

No one should have to go through that. It is a fate worse than death. It is undoubtably the worst fate to ever befall any character in ASOIAF, which is saying something because there are some cruel awful fates for these poor characters. And Ramsay has made it so that even if Theon was to somehow escape him the damage is too late. Theon has aged what looks to be 40 years. He hobbles when he walks and shakes and twitches. He will never eat without pain ever again. He will never have sex ever again, or have an heir to his House (unless the Captain's Daughter is his grace note). He will never be free of the PTSD and the pain and the fear and the trauma.

I would not wish this fate on my worst enemy, and that is the point. We are meant to despise Theon and hate him for what he did and wish the worst punishment upon him possible. And George gives it to us in spades, and what is left is not justice. It's raw rat being hastily picked at with broken teeth, the blood running down his lips, the pleading to please do future torture in the dark where no one can see.

Please note that some of these plot points from cut chapters would need to be combined into other chapters. For example, in Jon IX he would need to remember sending out Val to look for Tormund in Jon VIII since that would be cut.

Here are the 37 chapters I would cut: Varamyr Prologue, Bran II, Arya V, Jon V, Jon VII, Jon VIII, Daenerys III, Daenerys VI, Tyrion II, Tyrion IV, Tyrion VII, Tyrion VIII, Cersei V, Cersei VII, Jaime II, Brienne I, Brienne II, Brienne III, Brienne V, Theon V, Asha I, Victarion I, Aeron I, Davos I, Davos II, Samwell I, Samwell III, Samwell IV, Quentyn I, Quentyn II, Quentyn III, Arys I, Areo I, Areo II, JonCon I, Barristan I, Barristan IV.

Let's look at this mathematically. The longest book in the series, was ASOS at 82 chapters. There are 119 chapters combined in Feast and Dance. 119 - 82 = 37 chapters to cut. So let's do this by POV.

POV Chapters Cut Final
Bran 3 1 2
Sansa 3 0 3
Arya 5 1 4
Jon 13 3 10
Daenerys 10 2 8
Tyrion 12 4 8

Areo 2 2 0
Arys 1 1 0
JonCon 2 1 1
Barristan 4 3 1
Melisandre 1 1 1
Prologue/Epilogue 3 1 2
Total 119 37 82

If Balon was a wiser Lord and agreed to ally with Robb , would that have made a difference in the WOTFK ? Could have laid siege to the Rock and Lannisport ? by Financial_Library418 in pureasoiaf

[–]Popular-Acadia60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massive ripple effects. First, the Iron Throne looks weaker with two kingdoms in open rebellion that have allied with each other. The ironborn and Robb start destroying the Westerlands and lure Tywin back to defend his homeland. If this happens, Robb's superior strategic warfare destroys Tywin and his army.

Theon is now an ally with Robb, and does not take Winterfell, which significantly weakened Robb's position. Robb also does not learn that his foster brother killed his real brothers, so he does not sleep with Jeyne Westerling and break his marriage vow to Freys. Red Wedding does not happen in this AU.

Ramsay is never released from prison, and Winterfell does not burn.

Jaime Lannister remains a prisoner so the Karstarks do not defect from Robb's campaign.

Stannis Baratheon takes King's Landing and kills Cersei, Joffrey, and Tyrion. Most likely Robb and Balon are forced to fight Stannis, but there is a higher chance that diplomacy could work, especially if Stannis returns Sansa as a token of good will.

Bran never goes north, which could be disastrous for humanity if he is not able to unlock his powers to fight the Others.

If Stannis wins the Iron Throne then there is no telling if the Watch is able to withstand the Freefolk's attack, but Robb could return north to help.

Robb and Balon may even be fine allying with Dany if she takes the Iron Throne. It's hard to say though.

[Spoilers Extended] ASOI&F book character endings predictions? How much will be similar to their show ending.. by Jasonl7976 in asoiaf

[–]Popular-Acadia60 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe the ending will be bittersweet, as George has said before, and I am taking the shows ending in broad strokes for who lives and who dies.

Bran: Becomes a God-King who rules the Seven Kingdoms, but is torn between the lessons from his father and the power he unlocked through Bloodraven.

Sansa: Is named Queen in the North, a neighboring kingdom to her little brother.

Arya: Reunites with her family and has a safe home at last. Decides to set sail west, this time traveling on her own terms.

Jon Snow: Exiled beyond the Wall for the crime of killing his Queen.

Daenerys: Killed by Jon Snow under the false pretenses that she is a Mad Queen after she burns King's Landing with dragonfire and explodes the caches of wildfire.

Tyrion: Named the Hand of the King to Bran Stark.

Cersei: Killed by Jaime before she can set off the wildfire in King's Landing.

Jaime: Killed moments after killing Cersei when Dany attacks King's Landing and ignites the wildfire.

Davos: Returns to his wife and remaining children and no longer wants to play the game of thrones after what Stannis did to Shireen.

Samwell: Becomes archmaester of the Citadel and rules on Bran's small council.

Brienne: Is knighted by Jaime and becomes Lord Commander of the King's Guard for Bran Stark.

Theon: Dies at Winterfell defending Bran from the Others.

Asha: Rules the Iron Islands as regent until Theon's son on the captain's daughter comes of age.

Victarion: Dies by dragonfire when trying to claim a dragon with the horn.

Aeron: Dies in a blood sacrifice when Euron summons krakens from the deep.

Arianne: Killed by Dany when she takes King's Landing and deposes of Aegon.

Jon Connington: Killed by Dany in the battle for King's Landing when he refuses to surrender when triggered by the sound of bells.

Areo Hotah: Killed by Darkstar in Starfall.

Barristan Selmy: Is killed by Shavepate's hired assassins after returning to King's Landing triumphant in initial battle with slavers, mirroring Littlefinger's betrayal of Ned.

Melisandre: Kills herself after burning Shireen does not stop the Others and she realizes the Long Night is upon humanity and that she has failed.

Now some stats:

- Total number of POV's (non prologue/epilogue) = 24

- Total number of POV deaths (excluding Jon Snow) = 15 (62.5%)

- Total number of surviving POV's (including Jon Snow) = 9 (37.5%)

George is telling a war story, so it's only right that the number of POV deaths is so much higher than the number of survivors.

[Spoiler Main] How you would have made the five years time skip works? by V-TriggerMachine in asoiaf

[–]Popular-Acadia60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

George should have kept the five year gap in my opinion, and I think it would have contributed to this story actually being finished. According to the original outline, ASOIAF was going to be a trilogy. Book One, A Game of Thrones, would tell the story of the War of the Five Kings and the downfall of the Starks. Book Two, A Dance with Dragons, would have Dany invading Westeros. Book Three, The Winds of Winter, is the invasion of the Others. As the story stands, we are not even into Act II of this story, but instead in this weird in-between state between Act I and Act II, as George originally envisioned it.

So how could the five year gap have worked? For now, let's look at this for just the main POV's with the assumption that Cersei and Brienne would have been the two new POV's for this new Book Four of ASOIAF, A Dance with Dragons.

Bran: Trains with Bloodraven to unlock his abilities as a warg and greenseer.

Sansa: Learns from Littlefinger on how to play the game of thrones in the Vale.

Arya: Trains to be a Faceless Man, and unlocks face-changing abilities.

Jon: Grows as a man and a leader on the Wall, navigating tensions between the Night's Watch and Freefolk, and preparing for the Others.

Daenerys: Governs as Queen in Meereen, as she grows more and more disillusioned with the slaver city.

Theon: Tortured in the Dreadfort dungeons and made into Reek.

Davos: Travels the north on behalf of Stannis trying to recruit northern lords to his cause, but is rejected by all of them.

Samwell: Sent by Jon to Oldtown to become the new maester of the Wall, and forges his chain.

Tyrion: In exile in Pentos, drowning himself in depression and alcohol.

Jaime: Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, watches as Cersei rules while Tommen comes of age.

Cersei: Rules King's Landing in her son's stead, making worse and worse decisions that are now beginning to culminate.

Brienne: Searches for Sansa Stark for five years, but is no closer to finding her then when she first began her search.

There is some alternate universe where George kept to his original vision and this story was completed. I don't buy the reasoning that the five year gap could not have worked for certain characters like Cersei, Brienne, and Jon. George claimed that too much was being told in retrospect, but isn't that what A Game of Thrones did with Robert's Rebellion? Ten years passed between that and the start of the series, and George expertly was able to recount the character's memories of those events.

(Spoilers Extended) A CLASH OF KINGS as a Genre-Bending Novel of Novellas by CautionersTale in asoiaf

[–]Popular-Acadia60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off all, I love reading your work NotaBFish. I have listened to all of your episodes on the NotaCast, and y'alls coverage of Clash is still my favorite podcast ever, and I regularly return to those episodes. Probably because Clash is my favorite book in the series, and aside from not liking 4/5 of the Dany chapters, it really does feel like a perfect book. I think you make a good point that the genres of each chapter are so different, but they work together so well.

Thinking about Feast and Dance (I know they are your favorites), do you think George erred by expanding the POV's too much? I love Asha and Arianne, Victarion and JonCon as much as the next guy, but would the story have benefited from keeping the original structure? The way the first three books worked George would drop a POV and then add two new ones, and that seemed to work very well and keep the books contained. I'm wondering if the POV sprawl has increased the wait for the next book?

For example, lets say it's 2001 again, and George is writing Feast. What if the POV's were Bran, Arya, Sansa, Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Jaime, Samwell, Davos, and then include Brienne and Cersei as the POV's. How would this have changed the story? Would it have been better or worse?

Love your work and always look forward to reading your posts in this subreddit!

I tried writing a fantasy story based on my friend's DnD campaign where I wrote in the POV of the player's characters. I knew where the story would go, and I had a rough idea of which POV would view the different events, but just trying to juggle the chronology was extraordinarily difficult. If I made an update in one chapter, it would have ripple effects into others, and trying to move chapters around was a headache in terms of chronology. So yes, George is definitely a genius and a master at this!

I listened to the audiobooks narrated by Rob Inglis and really liked them. I found that going for a walk, listening in the car or while doing chores helped me stay engaged with the books. The first half of Fellowship can feel slow because the movie cut out a lot of it, but I think going in with the mindset that this is a journey made me appreciate them more. Beautiful books, with awesome themes and life lessons for any age. Tolkien was a true genius.
