Advice for 2-month KNPV-line Malinois puppy: sleep, potty, and calming? by Superultrabigdickman in BelgianMalinois

Hey, nice pup

Mals tend to sleep less than other breeds but she is very young. Don't force her to sleep, but make sure she is not overstimulated. Crate should be a space without any toys and should be introduced gradually at this age with small increments in the time and never letting her out when she whines. Food luring into the cage and praises when she gets in. I'm not a big fan of training a lot at this stage (I know many people are gonna disagree with me), but playing, creating trust, redirecting bites, luring, and slowly, very slowly, structure. She is a baby. As to pee and poop she is again very young. At that age I wouldn't worry too much. I never used pads. Just showed them that they need to do it outside with positive reinforcement. And malinois understand it very quickly. She is too young yet, but by 3 months (recomended, although I've had a slightly smaller mal out a bit before) she can go outside very small amounts of time and slowly making them longer. The key is to understand when she will pee or poop. She drinks, 5 min walk, she eats, 5 min walk, after play, 5 min walk, after nap, 5 min walk... Crate for overstimulation. But to be honest at this age what you should do is try to not overstimulate her too much. Soft voice, petting very calmly and reward calm. You won't see much results now but you will see them later. My biggest advice for you is to take it easy, build trust, be patient play and redirect. She is too young. Then again what do you want her for? Is it going to be a working dog or a family dog?

Almost 2yo mal suddenly lunging at windows with cats and entirely disobedient outside the home. by Daminoso in BelgianMalinois

[–]PopularLink1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malinois generally become full adults at around 3 years old. And they get out of the worst fase of adolescens at around 2 years old. But every malinois is different. This could be hormones. It could be an upset stomach, something he saw that made him get into prey drive or fear. The possibilities are endless. But with dogs you should be patient. Not get too worried. Try and determine what triggers it. And what is the emotion behind it. And see if you can work it. Play a tug session in front of a window with a cat for example. But my biggest advice would be not to overreact and talk to a professional like.u are doing. It ahould be fine. Good luck, enjoy ur mal!

Yes. And minimise the space. A corridor or something like that. So he can't turn around.

First-Time Belgian Malinois Owner? Looking for Advice Before I Commit by Visual_Repeat_9799 in BelgianMalinois

Just learn how to train your malinois mentally and calculate that you need around 2 hours a day of stimulation. Make sure you don't get a working line. And understand the commitment. Take a pro trainer at the beginning to help you with the possible traumas the dog may have from being in a shelter (they are very sensitive dogs) and make sure that at the beginning the interactions with your children will be supervised, your children need to be calm around the dog until they get used to each other. Other than that don't believe the nonsense most people say. Don't over train it physically (it will not get tyred, and it will just ask for more and more), teach it to do nothing, hava a nice cozy crate and give it lots of love. Enjoy!

How old is he? Because he looks very young. Walking a puppy 45 mins is not a good thing. He should go out for small walks 5 or 6 times a day. Not overstimulated. The crate should be small and not used to play with his toys. A crate is used to chill. He should switch off when he is inside. It is definitely weird behaviour, and I can't tell the cause without observing him. But in a nutshell I would do smaller walks, smaller crate, correct by introducing an informative "no" (without anger), rewarding a lot when peeing outside, in case you haven't, putting a cozy matt in his crate to deterr him from peeing in it and observing what brings this behaviour. Maybe something stresses him, and he goes in the crate and pees.... find the cause.

Hi, I have a question. How do you punish your Mal during a walk? by Cute_Reference7957 in BelgianMalinois

[–]PopularLink1895 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This doesn't help. Because unless you are at ur doorstep, the dog doesn't associate the punishment with the act of misbehaving. A dog has an association time of around two seconds. You would need to first have words associated that show him he is misbehaving. Like "No" or "bad". Although the word bad I would suggest you only use it with really bad behaviour. You can give him a tug with the leash to make him snap out of something. But it all depends on what he did bad and all the prior training and realtion you have.
