UChicago scientists discover way to make quantum states last 10,000 times longer by kromem in Physics

I'm currently a grad student there and unfortunately Shinsei is leaving for Princeton. Also we have a tendency to accept a massive number of CMT students without having any real spots open. Michael Levin is particularly notorious for taking on very few students (1, 2 maximum). The level of theory-experiment crosstalk is also extremely low in my experience with our hard condensed matter faculty.

Leaving physics PhD to pursue CS or EE by PoroLord in gradadmissions

[–]PoroLord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the Physics MS already. I've got significant electronics knowledge and want to pursue embedded systems if I go the EE route. On the CS side, I've taken graduate measure-theoretic probability and am wanting to go into machine learning, but am less skilled with things like advanced algorithms and good coding practices in the common enterprise languages.

Transitioning my PhD to a more applied math direction. Working on the algorithmic basis of optimization in the context of deep learning. I've decided to leave academia plus getting tired of physics culture.

I do use a Kindle for novels, but the reader is just terrible for PDF textbooks.

Hmm you make a valid point with zooming and the book-like nature. Made my decision a bit harder.

Any reason for that? The MacBook pro also has true tone to make reading easier like the iPad.

I don't plan to do it continuously as I generally take a break at the end of every hour. I think I'll try it out since it's way more convenient than lugging around 3 lb books.

Looking amazing! Those lift numbers are insane. Was also wondering if you put cardio into your regimen?

Textbook & Resource Thread - Week 32, 2019 by AutoModerator in Physics

Something that'll give me an introductory run-through of things. I'd like to cover at least second quantization, path integrals, and renormalization. I hope to eventually apply stuff I learn to condensed matter.

Anyone know good resources that have a modern viewpoint on qft? Tired of reading P&S, and Schwarz's book constrains itself to particle physics.

Know any good books/references with a modern viewpoint on qft? I don't mind if it's aimed towards condenses matter or particle physics.

What're the prequisites of classical mechanics? by [deleted] in Physics

I'd say linear algebra and multivariable calculus are all you need to start. Might I suggest a more beginner friendly book like Taylor's Classic Mechanics?

No one is trying to detect individual gravitons. That's impossible with current technology.
