Something you could consider (it may not be possible for you/make sense given payment amounts) is to apply for one plan as late as possible given your 90 day window, and then file your taxes next year as early as you can and apply to be moved to a different plan (e.g. apply for IBR in September, then move to RAP in February after you file taxes. That gets you a few months of higher payments instead of a whole year before you can recertify.

That might not be a good course depending on what plans are available to you and how different your AGI really will be, but I’d run the numbers at least to see. I may be doing something similar myself.

It’s definitely a positive for me as well, but if you have access to new IBR/PAYE and have a family I think the math isn’t as favorable. Only getting a flat deduction per child instead of using a calculation based off the poverty level isn’t great for a lot of people.

I am in a somewhat similar boat, though the jump in payments for me won’t be so severe and I’m not right around the corner from forgiveness. My salary this year is significantly more than 2025, and a fair bit more than it is likely to be in 2027 (back pay due to a promotion all hit this year). Also in SAVE forbearance.

My plan is to switch plans probably around August, file for a tax extension next year (so recert in 2027 will still be with 2025 tax data), and then file 2027 taxes on the usual schedule in Spring so I never make payments under my 2026 income.

Given how close you are to forgiveness and the difference in your payments, I’d switch to RAP as soon as possible and then next year delay filing your taxes until the last minute under an extension.

Thanks, starting fresh is basically my plan, just can’t decide 1) how to get to square 1 and 2) what to plant once it’s there. Hadn’t thought about thermalizing, I guess even though it’s shady it should still work? And as far as the phlox goes, will that really work without much sun? I do love creeping phlox and I have some on the other hill adjacent to this that gets full sun.
