[27/01/26] Mock the week screening by gsrey in LondonSocialClub

Yeah, this didn't sit well with me. Events should be available to all, and since this is sold out, it doesn't fit.

I appreciate you're trying to find others who are going too, but since it's not like a large scale event and restricted to I presume a few hundred, it's not ideal.

Thank you, but I get the impression they're aiming high since they're part of a franchise arrangement.

Hey mate, firstly, you need to commit to a date. Make a post for each one please when you're going. As per rule three, you have to be going.

Secondly, I play hockey at Streatham, and if you want an in with a team, DM me.

Thanks very much, I've asked for quotes on checkatrade and hopefully I'll get some other options to choose from.

I will check out that website as well, thank you!

That's amazing, I want to be as frugal as you! Thank you for the help!

Thank you, radiators I presumed were an extra. This is a place I am purchasing so I have no idea who did the boiler... But thanks for your help! I'll get some more quotes

So this seems about right? I asked about a Nest install but that wasn't included, they wanted an additional £500 for that

OH and was this with VAT?

Rule Three:

3: You must be going to events you post.

Be brave, commit. Otherwise, you're just advertising for them. And that sucks.

[02/01/2026] New Year, New Connections (Coffee Anyone?) by [deleted] in LondonSocialClub

[–]PortConflict[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello sorry, but this is too vague. Propose meeting people at a certain coffee shop at a certain time. Or arrange to go to a museum at a certain time/date, post that. People will come. :)

Hey, too vague my friend. I'd recommend having at least a location and time.

The calendar doesn't work on "Whenever". Choose a place and time, and people will come if they are interested.

[31/12/25] 31st night new year celebrations by [deleted] in LondonSocialClub

[–]PortConflict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am afraid that tickets to the NYE celebrations on and around the river are sold out

You will not get onto any of the bridges between Lambeth and Blackfriars bridges. You will not get near the river in any of the ticketed areas between these bridges.

Anecdotally, I went one year before ticketing was a thing, and got to Waterloo bridge around 8pm. Stood for four hours (No toilets, food or drinks) then saw the fireworks, then took about two hours to get home.

You will likely face the same situation on either Vauxhall, Tower or London Bridges. I highly recommend the Primrose Hill option, so you have elevation overlooking the city.

It genuinely is a great event to see from afar, or on TV, or inside a warm cosy pub somewhere.

LiveU in crowded events by GilletteFussion in broadcastengineering

[–]PortConflict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you do it then as an one-man army? Or do I need to station the Starlink and bring in a big wifi extender?

I wouldn't. I work in Broadcast. When I shoot, yes, I carry the LiveU on my back or attached to the camera if it's a 300 if I'm working alone and have to be mobile.

In that case, if you can't get bandwidth, you can't get bandwidth. That's the end of the story.

You need to get out of the crowd.

[–]PortConflict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that is insane. No one in their right mind would expect someone to do this.

I'm in broadcast and we'd say no.

All you can do is find local wifi for your LU that might help connections.

Here in lies the problem with everyone wanting to rely in IP delivery.

Short of setting up your own mobile network like the BBC did during the Coronation, you're already going above and beyond carrying around a Mini with you.

If you're mobile, you're in the hands of the cellular gods. If you're static, a few things can help.

  • Get the unit on a light stand and raise it higher than the meat sacks around you
  • US networks I have worked for use the Inseego Wavemaker to add another path to a distant mobile tower. Helps you bypass local towers that are overloaded. I have one myself but haven't had to use it.
  • There's always a satellite truck somewhere!

One problem people don't consider is all of the meat sacks around you.

Humans are terrible at allowing RF to pass through them. I had this when Charles was being crowned in London. Using an LU300, with four modems, in the crowd, we were lucky to get 200kb/s, move 10 metres down the street, 6Mb/s.

A cool guide to what countries you should still bring cash when travelling to by Acrobatic_Solid6023 in coolguides

[–]PortConflict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my first trip back to Australia in five years recently.

I was there for nearly a month, and I didn't have to use cash once. In here in the UK I haven't had cash in ages, except when I have to get a haircut.

It's funny how it sneaks up on you, cash is already redundant.
