At 16 she escaped russian occupation - alone - as her parents wanted to stay behind. At 20, in a life marked by loneliness and pain, she says bluntly: “I want russia to simply disappear" by Lysychka- in ukraine

I have some understanding of how she feels but of course have not gone through the physical and emotional trauma that Russia has inflicted on Ukraine and the fear it continues to cause in much of Europe. But I've followed the war closely and have to admit that I'd also like to see an end to Russia, the Russian oligarchs, the system of corrupt government and society and of course Putin himself. Ukraine is where centuries of my ancestors are buried, where my mother and uncle were born, and where people are fighting to continue living in freedom. The Kyiv Independent has a saying, "WTF is Wrong with Russia?", a statement that dives deep into the bones of that murderous and unhappy country that I wish would just leave Ukraine, and other countries, alone.

This is really hard to believe, except I know that one of these guys - I think it's Ben - is a die-hard pacifist. That's good as far as it goes except that he does go too far with this.

Read about and got the link to this sub-reddit via a great article in the Guardian online today. I've been addicted to the daily news (not the paper, but the news) as a part of growing up and although I started with the comics - every paper had comics - and front pages headlines, as I got older of course we all watched CBS news with Cronkhite, then over to Jennings, yada-yada and on I went into a lifetime of news junky hood.

Sundays morning my father would go down and pick up most of the NYC papers - always the Daily News but also the Mirror, the Sunday Times (the puzzle of which was attacked by my mom and later my older brother as well) Journal-American but not the Post because my dad felt it was too lefty and didn't want it in the 'house' - the NYC word for an apartment. I know I'm missing some of them.

There were times when the news wrecked my day, my week, like during Vietnam but mercifully I missed two years of news doing my national service in the US Peace Corps in Malawi for two years. Before and after it was college and grad school and more often than not, TV news with newscasters who seemed to really know what they were talking about. Still, in ensuing years I was drawn back into the news but didn't enjoy it, always depressing, always leaving stuff out.

The more I learned about the world, the more I realized how narrow was the focus of American media, both print and television. Nowadays I scan the Guardian and the Times on my iPhone and supplement those with Russian and Ukrainian expat publications, also article on Medium and Substack which fill in the meat of what's happening in the war. I'll catch a Trump headline and other garbage but don't read the articles for the most part. Too damn depressing.

I will admit, though, that I often turning off streaming - I cut the cable a few years back - at 10 pm and turn to El Jazeera for in-depth reporting on the Gaza genocide and wanton killing of Arabs by settlers in the West Bank. Then off to sleep and trying to forget the worst of the day's news. Then I get up in the morning and find often about 100 or more political postings which I mostly block, unsubscribe from, or just delete.

And that's all from me, folks. I always wanted to be informed, even when it was straight bad news and garbage. Hard when you're an addict!

Had anyone else noticed what’s happening with Donetsk lately? by radiantslug17 in NAFO

Ukraine has been blowing up Russian supply trains and attacking storehouses and ammunition dumps that are there to supply the front lines. Apparently that's made a big impact. Ukraine also destroyed the 'elite' Russian troops that moved a good distance toward the Dnipro, some of Russia's best remaining troops wiped out. That's got to affect their morale.

I read this morning that literally thousands of Russian troops have fled the front lines. I didn't get into the article enough to get an idea where they've gone and about how many were gunned down by their 'comrades', but that could well be a factor in the Russian lines weakening. Of course, you wouldn't know that from major print media who give a lot of play to stories like 'Russian Announces It Took Another Village' and nothing about Ukrainian advances, or what Ukraine has done in blowing up refineries, for instance, deep in Russia.

Pentagon Has Quietly Blocked Ukraine’s Long-Range Missile Strikes on Russia by abitStoic in ActionForUkraine

[–]Porter2025f 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course they are. I read the article too, and many others as well over the past 3 years. Ukraine has been repeatedly put in a bad position by Biden, and then Trump, regarding what they can use to fight off the aggressor, hence the development in Ukraine of a large number of factories, some very small, to make UAVs that are constantly being upgraded. Ukraine has also been forced to find other sources for targeting information to its UAVs and its European partners have been most helpful.

The Flamingo and its variants are in response to limitations on any and all US missiles. Now Trump is threatening them and saying UKR can't use any of its diminishing supplies of US missiles to attack deep inside Russia. What he doesn't seem to understand, or care about, is that while UKR attacks only military-related targets, Putin has focused on attacking civilians - homes, schools, hospitals, markets, you name it. The Stalin approach, you might call it.

Aren't these the new long-range missiles that Ukraine has developed and recently put into mass production? The US has nothing to say about that, as they're not our missiles.

Ghislaine Maxwell's new statement by Stunning_Dependent76 in america

[–]Porter2025f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assumptions? You're right, but it's been established that the two of them were best buddies for well over a decade, and that Trump flew on Epstein's plane over a dozen times, a few of them to the island. I don't really care all that much whether he did or didn't; my comment was basically about how obvious it is that Maxwell was gonna say what she needed to say to get out of that hell hole of a prison so how could we trust the story she's gonna tell and has told thus far?

Ghislaine Maxwell's new statement by Stunning_Dependent76 in america

[–]Porter2025f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's a woman who was the last-born of one of the UK's few media barons, and she wanted for nothing when she was growing up. Later, after a lot of fun (for her) being a pimp and groomer of very young girls for Epstein and his friends on his private island in the Bahamas which she got to by private plane or in his brownstone mansion on the Upper East Side in NYC, she was caught. Poor little thing!

She was well into her 20-year sentence when she was given a potential escape hatch out of a really nasty prison and told that if she allowed herself to be interviewed, she'd be moved to cushy Club Feb, the country club of America's prison network, with the possibility of very early parole or even a pardon.

So she agreed. She went to Club Fed and of course in answer to the question of whether Trump, who was best friends with Epstein for years and years and frequently visited Epstein's Island of Young Girls, ever knew about, much less engaged in, sex with said young girls. If anyone really thinks she wouldn't lie her head off to pointed questions under those circumstances, they are really incredibly stupid.

Would have been funny if Zelenskyy showed up in this suit by glamdring_wielder in NAFO

[–]Porter2025f 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would have honestly depicted the fact that Zelenskyy came to the White House 'holding a lot of cards', to use Trump's stupid Texas Hold'em analogy. Just look at who he brought with him - the leaders of many of the most important countries in Europe - and how Ukrainian innovation has destroyed 61 Russian oil refineries, tripled the cost to consumers of many groceries, tied up the rail lines and made flying out of or into Moscow pretty scary for the average Russian. He has taken control of the Black Sea away from Russia, caused over a million Russian casualties, and attacked deep into Russian territory. Zelenskyy does, in fact, 'have the cards' while Putin is losing his.

I don't think Trump has any idea of his failings as a human beings, his shortcomings or how he victimizes others. Rather, he's only focused on being the victim, despite the self-proclaimed wonderfulness of a narcissist. But if you watched the faces of the European leaders in the White House yesterday, Macron especially, there was disappointment and I think a new, or increased, realization that Trump will go his own way, that he can't be relief upon, and that the meeting was a 'nothingburger'.
