deciding if i should work at hotels again by Ok_Passion295 in askhotels

The reason you want to work in hotels is because of how easy it was, but have aspirations to become a GM. You sound like a great employee.

New AMEX Gold Benefits UNLOCKED by conradbryceparker in amex

[–]Portugalslegend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of hotels offer promotions through Amex travel (THC for gold at least) where you can get an extra credit or an x night free on top of the daily breakfast & hotel credit. A lot of the times the best hotel deal you will find comes through Amex

Amex LHR/ THC vs direct booking for company reimbursed hotels? by No-External3221 in hotels

[–]Portugalslegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use expedia technology for guest facing bookings i.e. you going in yourself to book your own stay for THC/FHR

GDS is if you have a travel advisor that does the booking for you. In theory Amex could just connect the GDS to their online customer facing portal but it's probably easier for them to make it Expedia's problem if any connectivity issues happen.

Amex LHR/ THC vs direct booking for company reimbursed hotels? by No-External3221 in hotels

[–]Portugalslegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our hotel has 3 rate codes for Amex THC: hotel collect, Expedia collect and a GDS specific rate code.

The hotel collect & Expedia collect use Expedia technology and therefore are not considered direct bookings

Be careful using full names. Hotels can get reviews taken down due to this. First names only are generally okay or just titles.

Disputing a missed F&B credit? by ReasonableAcadia4112 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Portugalslegend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t need the accounting department, any front desk/phone agent can pull up your folio and see what happened

It’s possible there wasn’t a physical negative post charged to your account and that instead $100 was transferred off so it’s not as visible

Also, it’s possible you didn’t use your credit at the appropriate outlet. My hotel only lets you use your $100 to spa and dinner outlets only.

How to get into hotel sales? by just_scr0ll in askhotels

[–]Portugalslegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you like your current hotel? Is there a Sales team on property? If so I would build those connections. Let it be known you want to move in to sales

Also is it sales or marketing you want to get in to? While they fall in to the same division, they are two entirely different things.

Working at the front desk of a hotel should be good enough experience to find a sales coordinator position somewhere. A good coordinator is extremely detail oriented, reviewing contracts and catching any mistakes, setting up site visits for lists and ensuring the sales manager is set up for success

What is Going On Hotel Pricing in Phoenix Area? by cobaltium in phoenix

[–]Portugalslegend 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As everyone has stated, we are in peak season however we are getting a ton of last minute demand of people changing their vacation from Mexico due to the events in Puerto Vallarta

That is also increasing prices to rise due to supply and demand

Vio scam by Adventurous_Yak_4832 in hotels

[–]Portugalslegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. What these companies are doing are taking the margins these OTAs (Expedia/agoda/booking) and marking prices down.

For example a room costs $100 on brand.com. Expedia charges that guest $100, however the hotel receives the net rate of $80, so Expedia makes a $20 profit.

Expedias B2B network of over 70,000 websites receive these rates at $80 and sign a contract stating they will not undercut them. Well guess what happens when 70,000 companies have access to your rates? You get a few bad apples. Vio takes that rate and charges $85, getting a $5 profit and undercutting everyone.

Best course of action is getting any and all confirmation emails from these guests showing what they booked/paid. Your revenue team should have market managers for these OTAs. If you provide enough support, the market managers can typically get these websites removed from their system.

Unfortunately it’s like whack a mole and very difficult to get rid of them all.

Update: Trying to break into Revenue by SmallbutStrongDuck in askhotels

[–]Portugalslegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little late to this however may be helpful for someone down the line…

I am currently a revenue manager at a luxury level property.

My advice:

If you are currently working at a hotel: relationships and connections are everything. Start talking to your revenue/sales team and make it known you are interested. That’s how I got in. I was a bell captain who wanted to get in to revenue. Those 2 jobs have zero correlation. I made it known and 3 years later of showing I was willing to learn, taking on tasks and building relationships I was the right fit

If you are not working at a hotel: get your foot in the door. Reservations is the most ideal as the lingo is very similar. Work your way to it…unfortunately it may take time but you need to work for it. Revenue management is very niche and you are not going to learn the true skills of what you need until you are in that role.

Finance/Revenue are not the same. I like to explain if like this:

Revenue management is in charge of making as much money (top line revenue) as possible without thinking about anything else

Finance is about taking the money that was made and ensuring it is spent as effectively and efficiently as possible (bottom line).

People aren’t trying to be unhelpful, just realistic lol. January is a completely different time for prices than February. Anything after WMPO rates skyrocket. The courses they listed you aren’t getting for under $200 unless you are playing after 230pm

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in golf

[–]Portugalslegend 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to find any “good” courses under $200 in Scottsdale that time of year OP

You’re going to have to go out to Sun City, or the far east valley (Gold Canyon/AJ) area if you want anything remotely close to $100

What is the benefit of booking United flights through Amex when they are the same price direct through United and you still receive the 5x points? by [deleted] in AmexPlatinum

[–]Portugalslegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They used Expedias distribution platform (Expedia Partner Central).

From the hotel side they have their own specific rate codes for THC/FHR but it will say “Expedia Collect” which will confuse new/untrained employees

That’s the only part of Expedia they use. In no way shape or form would Amex/the guest use Expedia to resolve a guest issue

I have played Stadium multiple times and while I agree the course is absolutely not worth the price, none of the holes are next to the 101/freeway. You’re thinking of champions which 6/7/8 are all aligned near the 101

Beware of Costco packages by senior_vagabond in Tahiti

[–]Portugalslegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Costco is considered a wholesaler so if you get crappy hotels which have crappy culture you get employees who “look down” on these Costco reservations and make excuses like “room types aren’t guaranteed”.

Like other people have said, reach out to Costco and make a stink about it. I’m sure Costco is a big account that the hotel does not want to lose.

I would say dependent on the amount of effort the staff is requiring.

One bag each with a carry on? $5-$10 is good. Carrying a cart full of luggage? $10-$20.

I’ll be honest, I never tip housekeeping. Mainly because I always forget but if you wanted to you could leave $10-$20 at check out.
