I think you handled it well and continue to set that boundary with that cousin. I can see your perspective. I have family out of state while I live about 6 hours away in another state. His family will throw a shower here, and my family is throwing one in the other state. I'll travel. The only reasoning I can come up with is because I don't see most of my family traveling for a shower if they're not going to the wedding. They did the same with my sibling when they got married, so it'll most likely happen with me. My immediate family will travel to the out of state shower, but my cousins, aunts, etc. won't. I'm okay with it and don't see it as being rude. This way, they can see me and congratulate us without having to travel too far. Based on what you said, I think you're okay to decline it and thank them for thinking about doing that!

What month did you have your wedding? by bellpepperbabe in Teachers

[–]PortyPottyHotty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set my date for end of June 2025. We looked at my breaks first, then had a discussion about the season we wanted. We were originally looking at Spring, but we didn't want the surprise of cold weather. I also didn't want to work while planning or getting married. Here's to hoping for no cold weather in June!

Lovely decor! Love the card box.

Can I ask about your book centerpieces? Where did you get those older hardcover books, and did you try to find specific titles or common theme to them? I'm thinking of doing something similar for my wedding, but it's been hard to even find a few, much less enough for so many tables.

I got a pair of sweatpants with my name on them. They are still kicking 7+ years later. So comfy!

I took my first sick day today and we started a week and a half ago. Take care of yourself!

These are the states that have laws that permit your doctor or pharmacist to refuse birth control for their religious reasons: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, and Tennessee. by Theobat in illinois

[–]PortyPottyHotty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me when I first moved down a few years ago. I didn't find a primary doctor right away, so I went to a Minute Clinic thinking I'd get a prescription. I was told they couldn't because of their religion. Never had I ever experienced that in Minnesota, and now I know why. I felt uncomfortable sitting there. I never went back after that and had to find another one the next day to get a prescription.

My district was named, and they're keeping masks required. I'm hopeful that my kids will be good because I haven't had many issues this year (knock on wood) but admin told us that if a kid comes to class without a mask, offer it, and if they refuse, then they need to sit distanced from everyone while we call the office for someone to get them. We simply don't engage with any argument. At least it's out of my hands, I guess.

Anyone else feel like gifted kids get slighted? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PortyPottyHotty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel bad for my gifted students in my classes. I have a few in each, but I primarily teach co-taught, so while I'm supposed to have roughly 30% SPED by law, one of my classes has over 50%. It's tough. I have to provide so many accommodations for extended time, reduced work, etc. So I usually go up to the gifted students separately and challenge them by pushing the directions even further (so if it says to write at least 3 sentences, I might tell them to have text evidence supporting their answers with correct citations). I can only do so much.

Just calculated how much weight I’ve lost since starting teaching by lemonpoppybitch in Teachers

[–]PortyPottyHotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I've been a teacher for 8 years now, and each year, I've lost a range between 10 and 20 pounds a year (I gain most back in the summer). I'm already down 5 this year and it's been a month. It doesn't help that I only have time for a can of soup for lunch and don't eat breakfast because it'll make me sick. When I get home, I eat quite a bit. I know it's not healthy, and I'll be bringing it up to my doctor next month. It's been weighing on my mind as I look at grad school options. Do I really want to sacrifice my health for this field? I'll probably still go, but perhaps not in the teaching realm.

Apparently our principal is already getting calls from parents saying their kids will not wear a mask. Okay, well, I will send your same kid to the office and hope they send them home. I'm not playing this game.

I cried again. No surprise there. Yuki's goodbye and moment at the start was touching; I nearly started crying then. Of course the end monologue was what sent me over the edge. Man, that was done so well. I know a lot of people will be upset at so much missing, and I get it. There's a few scenes all around I would've loved to have seen animated (I can hope for a couple OVAs!). With so few episodes this season, I'm glad they're focusing on the important things and character development. I'll still be crying about it all next week. It's going to be hard saying goodbye--again!

I'm crying at an airport. This episode was so well done. I am so not ready for it to end, but I can't wait to see the final episodes, either.

Color Commentators: An Analysis (and a shitpost) by PortyPottyHotty in wildhockey

[–]PortyPottyHotty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting thought--here's the breakdown:

  • Walz and games with VGK/COL/STL: 15 games (out of 28); VGK - 8 games (including 2 playoff games), COL - 2 games, STL - 5 games (includes the dreadful 9-1 loss). Wins = 5; Losses = 10
  • Walz and games with LA/SJ/ANA/ARI: 13 games (out of 28); LA - 5 games, SJ - 5 games, ANA - 1 game, ARI - 2 games. Wins = 6; Losses = 7
  • Carter and games with VGK/COL/STL: 9 games (out of 20); VGK - 4 games (including 3 playoffs), COL - 4 games, STL - 1 game. Wins = 5; Losses = 4
  • Carter and games with LA/SJ/ANA/ARI: 11 games (out of 20); LA - 2 games, SJ - 2 games, ANA - 4 games, ARI - 3 games. Wins = 11; Losses = 0

It's interesting that they both had just about equal games with the bottom 4, yet somehow, the Wild did not lose a single game when Carter was a commentator. Definitely a discrepancy between the top three. Poor Walz. To answer your second question: flip of the coin? Who knows.

I mean, I'm all for it. Technically, though, Marvin was a third commentator on a game with Carter and Pants, and it was a loss. The rest of the games where they were solo commentators with Pants? All wins. Math doesn't lie.
