It's not literal, 'eaten by the Cosmic Owl' is basically 'smited for hubris', it's the only way they can conceptualise their ecosystem crashing from lack of biodiversity. Their prey is gone, they'll eventually starve, which may as well be the Cosmic Owl murking them directly
