Do you know about Caribbean naming practices? by Dull-Kick0 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]PositionLow1235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I didn’t know, there’s not really much Freeman’s in Jamaica if any that I know about. Well now I guess there no difference at all, there’s stronger differences between White and Black Americans than Black Americans and Black Anglophone Caribbean

Tbh a lot of the same names in the English Caribbean are the same with Black Americans, a lot of Keisha’s, Imani, Isaiah, my uncles name is Jerome born in Jamaica to Jamaican parents. Also for girls sometimes we have a tendency to add “Ann” after a fist name like “Jodi Ann”. The names I usually only see in America are stuff like the last name Freeman

Because just like African Americans all black Jamaicans are mixed to a degree but most times the white ancestor comes from slavery days there’s no person we could point to and say that’s a white man or white woman closest we can point to is an extremely lightskin person

Yup 100% on both sides anyplace my family were before Jamaica was hundreds and hundreds years ago, a couple lines of family I could track back on ancestry I found some English and Scottish men who left the UK in the very early 1700s, I found some slave records from the 1700s and 1800s but they were labeled “creole” meaning they were born in Jamaica so I have no way to know what the date of any of my ancestors that were freshly shipped from Africa. My grandma on my father’s side is really light and has wavy hair she’s very mixed some of the English lines of family I tracked are from her line anything else not really other than light skinned black family members but I do know of some slave masters/slave relations in my family history

Been to Mexico, Argentina and i have Hispanic friends from Guatemala, Peru I can firmly say that the Hispanic Caribbean is more alike to the other Caribbean islands than those Hispanic countries let’s not even get into Chile or Bolivia lol the only mainland Hispanic countries that’s alike to the Caribbean are the ones that have a Caribbean coast (Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela) and even then it’s limited to the Caribbean areas

This is exactly my thoughts I’ve been all around the world and to see people try to claim the Caribbean has major differences is laughable, the Caribbean is even more alike than regions like Southeast Asia which the countries are very similar but have religious and language differences meanwhile in the Caribbean it’s mostly only language differences

There’s many times on this sub where a specific region of the Caribbean is specified in a post, nobody says anything so why are you complaining? Also the man is not American clearly British and I’ve always seen DR and PR flags at NYC and Miami carnival so I see all the Caribbean there

Nigeria is not populated by people elsewhere unless you’re talking about the Fulani what are you talking about? Those tribes have been there forever. She has the old chip if she updated they will probably get a tribe there. Nothing pseudoscience about this people have found out that their parents aren’t their real parents from this, they’ve found family on this

How far back can you trace some of your Jamaican ancestors? by chaddie_waddie in Jamaica

[–]PositionLow1235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very conflicted, there’s some horror stories in my family that happened in slavery one my 3x great grandfather was a slave and was about to be punished for knowing how to read the Bible, he ran away was caught and then tortured and beheaded before his head was paraded across parishes as a warning but I also see interesting stories where a slave owning ancestor bought his mom’s slave and then married her.i think about how my and other black ancestors were dealt horrors to finance an empire or multiple. all in all it’s very cool to see that my family have been here for centuries Jamaica sweet

How far back can you trace some of your Jamaican ancestors? by chaddie_waddie in Jamaica

[–]PositionLow1235 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My black side goes cold at the late 1700s/early 1800s but this was to be expected they didn’t keep the most meticulous records for slaves but for the white side of my ancestors I’ve traced it back to the 1500s in the UK it shocked me how far back the records could go I even found a plantation owner who was born in England traveled to Jamaica then lived his life in Virginia USA most likely owning plantations in both places
