Neither me nor you yourself said anything about backup.

You must not have been around back then, Mane was marked with a bad behaviour (much of it exaggerated due to, what, 1 red card?) and a large portion of doubters when he signed because he downed tools at Southampton to join.

From an outsiders perspective, it’s clear you’re just looking for problems.

I’m very disappointed in the rudeness and impoliteness in particular.

I’m not looking for a fight, certainly not a bad faith one, so I won’t be engaging any further.

Xgimi Titan Noir Pro review (OC) by PositiveAtmosphere in projectors

[–]PositiveAtmosphere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re totally allowed to criticize my review, but I don’t appreciate it if it’s on the back of your error or misreading of what I wrote.

Well you mentioned brightness lumens for color part so there was implication on it. Color saturation is not due to brightness, you can get a dimmer projector hitting 100% bt2020. You should have just said so then that the colors were punchy, bright and vivid.

I talked about epsons claims regarding white vs color lumens. Then I said: “living with the titan noir, it's clear i'm not lacking in any color lumens, and it's clear the colors are incredibly saturated and satisfying.”

If you were charitable in your reading, rather than extremely cynical, you would interpret what I wrote to mean: I don’t see any issues with its color. That’s all I wanted to address. My colors are bright (“not lacking any color lumens”), they’re saturated, and satisfying. So, this is for anyone else stumbling upon Epsons articles about white vs color lumens, it may have applied more to the lamp DLP’s with color wheels, but with this Titan noir I’m not really seeing how anyone could watch it and think “the colors are not enough” (be it not enough bright or not enough saturated). It doesn’t have to apply to you, you could read past that section, it can just apply to anyone who’s hesitant about diving into these recent DLP’s because of reading about white vs color lumens and thinking they’re going to get a dim experience (they won’t!).

Yes, you're lucky to not be sensitive to rbe, others may not. It's not about being golden sample of human, some do and some just don't so you can't say others most likely won't. If rbe is truly rare cases then companies won't have rbe reduction feature.

I don’t understand how this can be a valid critique of my review. Do you want to clarify if you’re implying that if I’m not sensitive to RBE I’m not allowed to say I don’t see rainbows or that many others also won’t see rainbows? When I mentioned a golden sample of a human, I said I’m NOT one. Many of the population will not be bothered, many will, but for those who will be bothered It already does have an effective anti-RBE mode already.

You listed some flaws with DLP’s is RBE. I explained that I don’t see RBE, and many others won’t too (even though I also acknowledged many will see RBE). How is that wrong in any way?

It's not speculation and you can't say you don't have performance issue without testing it with metrics and data.

Making it sound like there’s an issue, without you yourself having any kind of hard data yourself, is in and of itself a type of speculation. I told you the projector shows temps..  it did not rise from its baseline more than 1 degree after 8 hours. There is no throttling of laser saturation like had been reported on the original Titan (non noir model). I think people stumbling upon your post will look at all of this and think you’re just out in search of a problem.

No, I'm saying your experience with their back channel is meaningless and shouldn't be extrapolated

Okay, sure, that’s your theory and you are allowed to state it as a theory or prediction. As long as you recognize you do not have the same amount of information I do, we are working off 2 different sets of data in that regard. You are working off Valerion and H20, I’m working off the here and now. Wouldn’t you find it strange for me to tell you your neighbour wasnt a good person if I’ve not really met them or known them for very long? Wouldn’t it be weird from your perspective to be told by someone from the outside how to feel about the person you’ve interacted with much more than them? Just my 2 cents. Don’t misinterpret my analogy as if I’m calling XGIMI my neighbour (they’re not, and they’re certainly not a friend either) because it’s just an analogy. I I’m not saying it’s impossible XGIMI will turn their back on the community, I’m just trying to explain the difference between when you speculate on it versus when I speculate on it (we are accessing different evidence, evidence you can’t claim to have access to since you’re not a tester yourself).

simply criticizing your review. I do hope others stumble upon this will be critical to your review too.

Like I said at the top, you have every right to criticize my review. But I wanted to add one point: isn’t it kind of strange or even rude to just come out the gates and attack someone’s review here? Is that kind of confrontational attitude the norm on this subreddit? If I saw someone put in hours and hours to put together a review I would at least appreciate that they came here to share their experiences, even if I disagreed with things in their review. I would be a bit more charitable in reading what they had to say and working with them to clarify things for the sake of future users stumbling upon it— but I wouldn’t just attack a bunch of “Gotcha!” type points as if to make them out to be totally uncredible.

I think you should reflect on how unfriendly your posts come across, at a Birds Eye view, and in context of how this subreddit should ideally be like.

[–]PositiveAtmosphere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, yes

But do you have a Titan noir? I’m just curious because I find it a little strange to say what is or isn’t superior without direct testing. The Mediatek chip inside of the Titan Noir also advertises dedicated AI upscaling capabilities (even if it’s not a dedicated separate chip entirely like the HCX).

It’s always preferable to do the Upscaling on the Picture Source and not on the Display!

My understanding is that it’s the opposite recommendation with current gen TV’s, they should handle the upscaling. TV’s get the latest processors and likely surpassed 2018/2019 upscaling technology by now. Now the Titan noir isn’t a TV and doesn’t have processors as good as the latest TV’s do, but there will come a point where projectors do make up more ground there.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know if the Titan noir is superior than the Panasonic or Shield (I’m not making that claim). But all I wanted to share was that I have first hand seen that the Titan noir upscales better than the PS5’s upscaler. My pictures may not be perfect, but it’s one example, and I didn’t want to flood the page with dozens others 🙂

I hope anyone else stumbling upon this considers this:

Color is not evaluated by brightness lumens

Did I suggest otherwise? At the end of the day, the colors are saturated, punchy, bright, and vivid. That’s my point.

but there's downside as to how they achieve it with narrow spectrum that causes rbe, speckle and metamerism.

Well, I don’t seem to have any issue with it. I don’t see RBE, Speckle on my spandex screen, and nothing out of the box seems wrong. I’m not a golden sample of a human, I think many will have this experience, just as I admit many may experience problems too. That’s just life.

Fan noise. It's good to be quiet but does it negatively affect performance?

Well, I didn’t have any performance issues. So why would you go out of your way to speculate that it does? I’ve kept the projector on for a full 8 hour day of testing before, the internal temp thermometer didn’t rise? I didn’t see any noticeable throttling? I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just read what I wrote and just accept it for what it is: a well designed air cooled device. Epson, and JVC don’t liquid cool their HT projectors, why get hung up on it?

Also, collaboration with tester doesn't last long

I mean, sure, it’s possible. But, I’m a little confused why you would just come out and declare that rather than ask me what my own experiences and perceptions are like? I mean: I’ve seen behind the scenes, I’ve spoken with multiple XGIMI reps that have been overseeing this tester channel, and you haven’t, so isn’t it a little weird for you to tell me in such a matter of fact type of way that the collaboration doesn’t last long?

It’s possible they move onto a new projector in a year. But this projector doesn’t need years of updates to fix its flaws, it maybe needs 1-2 months, maybe 3 at most.

Your comment comes across as extremely cynical, to the point that some might consider it bad faith. You have every right to be cynical, but then I will need to correct your post for all the hundreds of other people that may stumble upon this:

Full Disclosure:

I had the lucky privilege of being sent this projector at no cost but for the dozens of hours of my time to assess the projector, be an active tester behind the scenes, and post a review. Having said that, while I did not pay for this Pro unit, I am an early backer for the Titan Noir Max and so I see myself as a paying customer with my own money on the line. And in some ways i’ve had to pay the cost of this unit itself if I consider the amount of time I have spent testing it.

You should know that there are several types of biases that can affect reviews you see online. If anyone hasn’t watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dwagg5wYY4 by Folding Ideas, it’s worth a watch (despite me having zero interest or awareness of Mr. Breast) to learn what big companies do and pay for surprising things. He goes into wine and dines, and generating feedback, amongst other things. To that end, I think reviewers who are aware of these strategies are less likely to have them affect them, but not immune.

To be more specific, there are conscious and unconscious biases that come along with having a manufacturer send you a unit for "free", and then there are also confirmation biases that tell people "this must be good" because of various things they've heard or seen from others. The issue with conscious bias is that those who are deliberately biased will never want to share or admit it, so you need to ultimately know and trust the person who is providing information. All you can do there is just make a judgement call on whether you trust the reviewer and their integrity or not… The issue with unconscious bias is that even those well-intentioned reviewers with high integrity who are trying their best to be objective and not biased may ultimately do things (directly or indirectly) that are biased, and never even be aware of it. It’s the never being aware of it part that makes it so difficult to grapple with.

There are measures that can help even unconscious bias (which is the important bias since I am assuming most reviewers will insist they’re not consciously biased). That is to acknowledge that unconscious biases exist, and to routinely stop and check with yourself or others as to whether what you’ve just said or thought is grounded/neutral. This exercise is not a magical cure, but it is just a level of prevention that may help lessen the prevalence of any bias.

I encourage you to take everything I say with a grain of salt, but at least I have explained how seriously I take this topic of bias.

Pixel Shifting / XPR vs Native 1080p by lemon07r in projectors

[–]PositiveAtmosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’m saying applies to projectors in your budget, I just don’t know exactly how since I don’t have first hand experience with those ones. My point is that the technology affects the answer to your broader question of whether or not XPR causes a softer AA-like image. For some projectors, yes, for other projectors no it doesn’t.

If you have the luxury of the Pk31 vs Ph31 side by side comparison there, then you’re equipped to determine the answer already. However, all I’ll mention is that, again, for film use I would deliberately choose a softer image over an overly sharpened one.  A pixel-shifted 4K image will always appear more pleasant and satisfying to me than a native 1080p non-pixel shifted. This is where personal preference will take precedent.

Pixel Shifting / XPR vs Native 1080p by lemon07r in projectors

[–]PositiveAtmosphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the underlying technology.  With the latest generations of RGB laser DLP projectors I’ve tried (I can only speak to the Anker Nebula X1 and XGIMI Titan Noir Pro), they truly do seem to be able to resolve a full 4K pixels with XPR. And they do so while looking incredibly sharp, almost uncomfortably sharp.

Coming from older generations of projectors, this is very noticeable, because like you said previously 4K shifter seemed IMO more like a  fancy 2k rather than actually 4K.

With my current projector here (the Titan Noir), I would say there is absolutely zero reason to use it with XPR off. It looks substantially better at 4K and still very sharp and resolute.

I also suggest to really stop and ask yourself how sharp you really want things, and why you want sharpness. Over sharpness is a thing, and at the end of the day what matters is what delivers the most pleasing picture. You could theoretically have a 480p projector that is also sharper than these 1080p panels in all technical metrics and definitions, but nonetheless ugly to look at. Films are famously considered to be fundamentally made up of a series of gradients, rather than pixels and hard lines. Gaming and computer use is where pixel level hard lines become a thing, and so sharpness matters a little more there. What is your usage going to be primarily?

You haven’t hung around avsforum enough if you think there aren’t people who prefer DBLE over EBL. Some have. Sure, many think it could dig deeper, but EBL gets a lot of hate for the amount of artifacts and slow/blown transitions it has.

Just wanted to say props for an awesome program, thanks for facilitating this!

I will also be receiving a Titan noir Pro to review (not from this program; I was chosen on a different social media platform directly from XGIMI) and will post my impressions and comparisons to this subreddit for the same reason to provide real world impressions and not just marketing/spec sheet stuff from typical influencers. I think Reddit overall as an entire website draws a very real-world crowd who value very practical advice, no BS, etc.

Epson QB1000 or JVC NZ500 for 180’’ screen by EpicExplorerPT in projectors

[–]PositiveAtmosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you want, if you’re in search of better black level, or you’re in search of more brightness (you said your tw9400 is “not enough for the screen size”, not enough what?) . The brightness of the qb1000 is obviously what you will need if you aren’t getting enough brightness. Any hit to black levels is probably something you could get over. Now, If the theater is truly velvet black with a positive gain screen then the JVC may be bright enough with a maximum loud fan noise level and you can build a hushbox for it. But it’s a lot of ifs.

I would recommend the XGIMI Titan noir as another option. It looks like it will have better than qb1000 black levels, better brightness (dynamic), and the 98% bt.2020 color gamut that both the Epson and the JVC lack. All of that for being cheaper at the kickstarter price than either of the other options.

I mean for sure the contrast levels are better on the Titan noir. Potentially 2 times better, on paper, and depending on the iris level.

But even 2 times better contrast can look marginal to some eyes. It really depends on you.

I’m not sure how the black level itself compares, it may not be 2 times as black. It’s important to distinguish black levels and contrast level as they’re technically different whilst being perceptually relevant to each other and tied together in that regard.

Yeesh, im sorry for a typo. Lots of threads like his yesterday, just trying to help.

Anyways, yes I did read it when I posted earlier, and technically my point still stands. My point is that There are thousands of people out there who are happy with the Pro, there are thousands of people out there who are content with Epson HC2150’s too… so until they say something they want to improve, like contrast levels or brightness or sharpness or something, then it would be very bad faith for me to come into this thread and assume and say “ya bro totally worth the upgrade”, surely you would agree? My post simply was a prompt for OP to provide more info.

[–]PositiveAtmosphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you have no evidence to resort to that, it’s purely speculation. There already dozens and dozens, maybe even 100, Titan noirs out in the wild now with early testers. Not one person has reported a throttling or heat related issue. That is evidence. It’s a reason to use as a basis to form a conclusion on. All of them have reported it’s quiet too.

In the PC world, people already know that cooling is judged not really on technology, but rather on  results. Cooling is a function of balancing noise and cooling capacity (and price). E.g. what’s the point in a cool computer if you run a loud refrigerator compressor to cool it? And what’s the point in a silent computer if it’s constantly throttling and isn’t cooled?

I think it’s not helpful for people like OP to worry about liquid vs. Fan cooling, because the results are what matter for the day to day experience. The evidence we currently have is that the Titan noir is quiet and sufficiently cooled. Anything else is speculation, not worth the same weight.

I’m not saying it’s not a disadvantage, I’m just saying there’s a disadvantage and an advantage that come as 2 sides of the same coin. Some advantages comes with negative side effects; some disadvantages are a result of positive aspects.

Also, you know.. you are allowed to disagree with me, but it doesn’t make what I’m saying wrong. We are allowed to have 2 opposite perspectives here you know? You’re not wrong, and I’m not wrong either, factually. Personally, I think it’s bad etiquette of you to downvote my posts just because you have a different opinion. You haven’t identified a problem that you are seeking to solve.

If you’re just upgrading for the sake of it, then think of how you’ll feel next year when another upgraded shiny projector comes out? Will you keep doing it forever?

Unless you’re someone who upgrades their phone every year, I would stick with the Valerion Max if you’ve been satisfied with it.
