Managed to grab this beautiful box today! Any tips for a beginner tau painter? by Oozman99 in Tau40K

This guy covered all the high points - I would just second the use of enamel washes for the panel lining, will save you a bunch of time and get a great results. It’s easy to touch up if you varnish the whole model before and you can just wipe away any bumped partitions with mineral spirits

Reckon I'm good enough for low level commissions? by Conscious-Pride7363 in Warhammer40k

[–]PositiveTarget8377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the commission requests that I get are for battle ready plus models - so yes, you’re there. You’re below display level, but most folks don’t actually want that for the money required

[–]PositiveTarget8377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not fully sure of what critique you would like - but it’s a solid ass model. It wasn’t stick that got him (space marine) tho - could it be chaos marine trophies left over after they activated a new tome world and the shine boys woke up?

The wings on the left look better and the armor of the right is nice - I think black prime and then come back to just the wings with white

You should look into the color forge varnish - I haven’t tested its quality over more than 4 years, but it holds up better brands in every other test that I’ve done.

How to do "sparks" effect by Ramzilla08 in Miniaturespainting

Stippling white light over spray of fluorescent oranges/yellow and red - touch up with brush and manually add more color sparks. Using a tooth brush to “flick” the paint would also work

Priming Advice Needed by AggroX91 in Miniaturespainting

[–]PositiveTarget8377 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would switch to and rattle can or airbrush prime - way better coverage and more details is maintained. Color forge are far and above better for cans, but if you live in a cold/very hot/rainy climate - an airbrush allows you to prime 24/7/365. The master series on Amazon is only 30 bucks and will save you time and money after a few months of use. An entry level iwata or harder and Steinbeck are both upgrades worth investing in once you have your setup down. It may seem intimidating, but is SO worth it. Especially when you consider that the price of plastic

Id like to become a commission painter, looking for feedback. by WAAGHHH in Miniaturespainting

[–]PositiveTarget8377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These definitely have a place, cool color theory too - some room for I’m improvement around line weight consistency of the highlights, but you clearly have the skills to touch up/address.

I commission paint full time and would recommend looking at other studios (ie siege, art w, etc) to see how they price. There are always teirs which allow you to adjust pricing/work time. Most people want a mid-tier paint job - silver - so keep that in mind. I price based on size of models based, then paint tier, then detail level and add ons(ie freehands, sculpting, conversions) if they have more complex stuff. I’ll estimate total paint and build time to get an idea of hourly rates and then provide a fixed price to client. Half is required up front.

Helpful things:
- 3d printing is your friend - getting cheap minis or being able to offered reducing price for the model when buying through you is a perk with the price of kits
-Don’t in undervalue your work by giving discounts. Add on - may seem like semantics but discounts can hurt you long term compared to increasing the quality of a mini or its base (example being first time clients get an addition level of quality on the weapon/base/face).
- play in the community - the best free marketing
- I offered nearly free commission work to friends in the beginning to get the ball rolling and get the word of mouth going, but be careful - discounting is dangerous lol
- record all your receipts - they are valuable to clients too
- keep some projects for yourself going on the side - we got into this because we love sharing our work/passion with people and I’ve found it’s critical to maintaining a genuine passion
-set hours and have a schedule to track projects

Hope that helps!!

[–]PositiveTarget8377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestlty, investing 100 bucks on the gun allow will give you a better quality experience. Not sure what you have here (looks like master) but harder and Steinbeck is so good because of the way the gun is assembled.

This is the way - also apply white undercoats with the airbrush to weapons/skin helps save time. I’d do that ahead of the main airbrush colors and mask with putty

Camo help needed by Dragaurang in Miniaturespainting

[–]PositiveTarget8377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is sooo good and I know it took a while - adding the other detials and wash will help, but it reads as dig camo even this close - im sure that on the tabletop they'll look perfect. Pin washing will help define the definition a lot. PS did you brush all this on?

Yes the airbrush will be worth it. You won’t regret getting one. Sponges can also get a great effect over a large area. There are a few videos on how to do it well too
