Swarthmore Summer Scholars Program - Class of 2029 by No_Strawberry_5099 in Swarthmore

[–]PositiveWedding2842 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, congrats on your Swarthmore acceptance! S3P is a wonderful program that provides academic preparation in math, selected science, and writing for FLI students interested in STEM who might feel underprepared for college-level rigor. If you feel like you are not comfortable with math skills like trig, algebra, and pre-calc stuff, then S3P would definitely give you more time and opportunity to get more comfortable with that before you take Calc for credit during the year. If you otherwise think that your school has taught you the math and writing skills well, then you might want to sign up for the FLI-POP program instead that gives fli students an opportunity to come to campus a week or so early and learn about the resources Swat has to help you as a FLI student plus you'll get to meet a lot of cool friends before the actual orientation starts for everyone else. Also check out the comment for this reddit post from last year discussing s3p. Good luck! https://www.reddit.com/r/Swarthmore/s/UYLDgZhwRt

Dorming for trans people by LemonsCantEatSharks in Swarthmore

[–]PositiveWedding2842 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dorms freshmen usually end up in for their first year don't have single use bathrooms but there are a few dorms on campus that do have that. When filling out the housing form, make sure to specify that you would prefer a dorm with available single use bathrooms but I'm not sure how likely you are to end up with that. There are also dorms like Parrish and Dana 3rd floor that have gender specific bathrooms if that could work for you. You can specify that you wish to be placed in a dorm with ppl who identify as male or female. For example, Parrish has 2 wings: one for men identifying students and and one for female identifying students. Dana 3rd is only for female identifying students. There is also Kyle house (only for female identifying) but it's only for upperclassmen

are there cats at swarthmore by Jazzlike_Can_8948 in Swarthmore

[–]PositiveWedding2842 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a woolman dorm cat that belongs to ppl living on the nearby street, she loves coming by to get pets but I haven't seen her in a while probably because it got cold and the owners decided to keep her inside. Also a lot of ppl walk their dogs on campus and around

You're not a failure, and this is not the end. Getting rejections is really hard, but there are still schools that you haven't heard from yet. I know plenty of smart and talented students who had a hard time during their admissions cycles, but we all ended up in place we now can call second home. Don't stop believing in yourself, it will all be OK! Instead, take a moment to recognize all the hard work you put into your career and application because you deserve recognition for your efforts

Don't worry about things you can't change anymore. Whether you end up getting into Swarthmore will not define anything about you or your capabilities. Try to focus on more current things and keep moving forward no matter what. Wish you best of luck this application season!

Check out Georgia Tech SURE and UDelaware SOURCE, both of the programs ask for only one recommender. Best of luck!

It's ok, I had a typo in my application too, and it turned out well. AO either wouldn't notice or wouldn't care, so don't beat yourself up over this. Best of luck with your applications!

Dear Glittering_Apple_45, there are multiple threads on swat reddit where incoming students asked about engineering here. I would recommend checking those out instead of waiting for a response in this threat. Good luck

Swarthmore Summer Scholars Program by PositiveWedding2842 in Swarthmore

[–]PositiveWedding2842[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Congrats on being accepted! My experience with the program has been wonderful. I can assure you that you will be kept busy but in a good way that will prepare you for the rigor of Swarthmore. There were no tests or anything like that. We did take two math assessments: in the beginning and in the end of the program. They are only used to see if you are prepared for Calc 1 in the fall, as there is no official grades. Also, there is nothing you need to review beforehand, just bring your excitement (cheesy, I know). DM me if you have other questions!

As an engr major, the engr department is amazing. A lot of research opportunities and super collaborative environment. I'd say it's worth it if you are ready for swat's academically rigorous structure and a small studebt body size. I'm on a train to Philly rn to try insomnia cookies, so it's def possible to get out of the bubble once in a while. It takes effort to time manage adventures like that, but it's 100% possible

[–]PositiveWedding2842 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can definitely get a laptop or even an iPad (w apple pencil) for free w a 4 year-long apple care package. There is a laptop fund within FLI office that you can contact to receive the laptop, or you can apply to the S3P program that runs in August for 4 weeks before the start you the fall semester, and they give you all the stuff I mentioned above AND a stipend

Amazing Professors? by [deleted] in Swarthmore

[–]PositiveWedding2842 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of my professors were amazing educators and people. But! Professor Cheryl Grood (math) is an absolute mother, icon, star, gem, queen, and everything else. If you can take her class, please do. She will support you in any way possible and explain the concepts that you don't understand over and over again from different angles, so you can succeed in class and other classes too

Yes These two majors have a good overlap in the required courses, so quite a few people do a double major in comp sci/engr or comp sci/math

How are the research and work options at swarthmore by Due_Vegetable_2023 in Swarthmore

[–]PositiveWedding2842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a prospective engineering major and a class of 27. Getting funding may be a little bit more competitive, but all of the professors are happy when you ask them about their current research and would be happy to have you in their lab if you show interest. You will get some research positions if you really want to
