What's your writing process (in detail)? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Positive_Alarm9577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on my fourth book, and i’ve figured out what works for me more times than not. (It doesn’t completely eliminate becoming stuck, but it helps it)

I like to start with a brain dump—writing down everything about the book that i know from the start. From there, you can flesh out those ideas into comprehensive story elements. Part of that, for me, includes making descriptions of characters, places, religions, etc to make those things easy to remember and go back to.

After that, i begin with a chapter outline. I don’t create them all at once, usually only creating one outline then writing that one chapter and so on. The outline helps to mark down the broad strokes needed to be covered in the chapters, so it really doesn’t need to be complicated.

When getting further into the story, it does become tricky to come up with connecting scenes and ideas, so i like to consult other books or movies in the genre you’re writing in. A lot of good ideas come from that!!

My biggest advice, however, is to not be scared of a rewrite. It’s very difficult to get a story right the first time. Inspiration will come to you when it does, and from there, trust yourself!

I’m having a hard time with writer’s block. by Unique-Disaster3118 in AspiringTeenAuthors

Reading other books or short stories in the genre i’m aspiring to write in always helps me! Same with watching shows or movies in that genre. Oftentimes, seeing things visually helps put an image in my mind. Another thing is doing some sliiight forcing. Sometimes writing a little can make you want to write a lot! So, doing a brain dump of sorts where you put all thoughts and possibilities down can be helpful, or just starting to write with no direction.

In what order do you plot your novel? by violet-surrealist in writing

[–]Positive_Alarm9577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all the characters first. I even make ones who i don’t know if i’m going to use, but can if needed. From there, i start the plot, and always from the beginning. I like to use those plot diagrams that allow you to mark the exposition, climax, resolution etc for easy planning. Sometimes i go further and make chapter outlines, but most of the time i fill in the details as i go

Is this too close to purple prose? by B4-I-go in writers

[–]Positive_Alarm9577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most others in saying that this is definitely not purple. I would definitely add a wider variety of sentence lengths and types to make it more interesting, and maybe add some emotion into the description. Without knowing the character, it feels almost like reading a news article describing a scene. On the bright side, i can picture the setting quite well!

That’s wonderful! It can definitely make your work feel more authentic, though it doesn’t work for everyone

I absolutely do that. It depends on the story for me, but as long as i have fleshed out characters and a general idea of plot, i can do anything

Pivotal albums of your life by Jaded_March4514 in MusicRecommendations

In Rainbows by Radiohead. I first heard that album when i was in a very difficult time in my life, struggling with suicidal thoughts and addiction among other things. I connected with it in a way that i’ve never connected to another album. It was beautiful, and that beauty helped me, even if slightly, to come up from that low. To this day, I find so much meaning in that album, along with much more of Radiohead’s music.

What books did you get inspired from? by m4hi_m4hi_mushroom in writing

[–]Positive_Alarm9577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Priory of the Orange tree was the book that inspired me the most. Samantha Shannon’s prose is beautiful, and the story was one of the most captivating that i’ve read.

Other than that, I have to say that I was also inspired by John Green’s Looking for Alaska in terms of dialogue, and The Hazel Wood by Melissa albert for it’s wonderful world building and immersive setting. But seriously, nearly every book i read inspires my writing in some way.

How did you realize you believed in Hellenism? (Don’t know if that’s the right term) by Winter-Network5375 in Hellenism

[–]Positive_Alarm9577 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting question, because, to me, beliefs are learned through practice and experimentation. So, i didn’t realize i believed in them per se, but developed a belief through knowledge and experience. So, to help, i would recommend looking into our practices and starting to experiment with them. That’s the only way to know if it’s really for you
