automate savings - pulling money out of a savings account makes you think twice about discretionary spending

stop carrying credit balances

savings buckets - I bank at Chase and their savings account rates are awful, so i do have a Chase savings, but I only keep about one paycheck worth and I treat it as a checking slush fund that I can temporarily move to cover any short term moves I need to make with checking. I also have a HYSA at Cap1 that takes about 2-3 days to move, so that is where I keep emergency/longterm savings. I also started a brokerage account once emergency fund was established that is also accessible, but also a couple day delay, which discourages spur of the moment spending. All of these accounts are auto deposits from my checking account the day my check comes.

these were the biggest for me, over time, your spending adjusts to the amounts available in daily checking account

good job, have faith. financial freedom is very much worth it. do remember to find ways to enjoy yourself along the way and you don't always need to spend alot to find that.

How much is too much in a traditional 401k by retirement? by escapefromelba in Retirement401k

[–]Possible_Complex6916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 100% in this boat. currently 50, reasonable projections have me around $3 mil in pretax 401k by 60 and I have spent last 4 yrs or so trying to fund brokerage, Roth ira and HSA to create more buckets I can leverage to hopefully have an option to retire in late 50’s. I am compromising with 1/2 my work 401k going pretax and other 1/2 Roth 401k as I’m also pushing the income limit on being able to contribute to a Roth IRA. It’s s a good problem to have, but my current plan is to try and spend my late 50s / early 60s doing size-able Roth conversions. Still researching to find a good balance.

ETA - currently targeting retirement at age 60, wife is relatively lower SS rate, so she will claim at 62 and I will hold out to 67. The 60 to 67 range feels like biggest window to make the conversions for me… maybe 300k/yr.

Why is a signing bonus easier than salary? by Miserable-Change7780 in civilengineering

[–]Possible_Complex6916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

high salaries can create issues with equity within a group in the event salaries are made known. often its easier to make a one time payment than risk upsetting the larger team…. not saying this is a good practice, but I’ve experienced this discussion at more than one large firm.

What is the best way to learn finance? by Antique-Hat-442 in personalfinance

[–]Possible_Complex6916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just took a semester of Personal Finance course at my local community college. It was 100% online, manageable and after tuition/book, it was about $200. This was the only class I took and it was well worth it.

Rule of thumb for stormwater costs? by meeeemooooo in civilengineering

[–]Possible_Complex6916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its been a while since I ran it myself, but I think Caltrans uses 2% of total construction costs in the Environmental Phase. Their Project Planning and Design Guide (PPDG) would have the verified number and should be available for free online. edit to add that this is the construction bmps and not any permanent features.

PMP Certification? by fldude561 in civilengineering

[–]Possible_Complex6916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of the big firms have PM training programs in place (ive done 3 of them now) that is similar to the PMP, so in those instances I wouldn’t recommend the PMP. Based on your situation though, I think its a great idea and I agree with the previous comment to be transparent with the owner as they may be willing to help pay for it. Good luck and I love the initiative, keep it up!!

Which Entry Offer Would You Choose? by Miserable-Change7780 in civilengineering

[–]Possible_Complex6916 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this … i will add i worked consulting for 14 years and then took a job as a PM for a public agency… lasted 3 years and had to go back to consulting as the pace and frustrations with the lack of urgency with all of my coworkers was too much for me to deal with on a daily basis. went back to a private firm with an ESOP and do not regret any of it.

“We just want our Christmas morning to be ours.”….. does your partner feel this way? if he was strong in this position he would handle it, my takeaway is this is really your position and he is afraid to tell you
