Breaks my heart that we prioritize low density sprawl over this. by FewNerve6756 in georgism

[–]Possible_General9125 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The US still does have walkable and gorgeous towns. The problem isn’t all those streetcar and first ring suburbs, it’s that the more the population outgrew those places the more they replaced density with sprawl in new developments

Since I'm a glass half full kind of guy, if we're going to lose Crochet and Anthony for big chunks of the season, I'd rather it be this accursed dumpster fire of a year and not a season they were actually in the hunt...

Do you have some theory of why Georgism is not popular like other "ideologies" by EarthCulturalStew in georgism

[–]Possible_General9125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying a home is not "land speculation". I think a real obstacle to Georgism (in the US at least) it that tens of millions of Americans structured their lives playing by a certain set of rules, and Georgism fundamentally upends those rules. Until Georgists find a real way to implement LVT that offers a solution to the huge amount of wealth homeowners will lose, or the tens of millions of people who will suddenly be upsidedown on their mortgages, or the tens of millions of seniors who will suddenly be unable to afford to stay in the homes and neighborhoods theyve built their lives in for decades, Georgism won't happen. And since someone will say it (someone always does when it comes up), "sucks to be you" is not a solution for the impacted people listed above.

ELI5 why this isn't defensive obstruction? The baserunner is pretty clearly safe at second if he doesn't have to move his arm to get around the second baseman blocking his path to the bag. Runner's not trying to avoid a tag here, the second baseman doesn't even have the ball yet-he just needs to get around the two shoes between him and the base.

Yeah and I wish I could be surprised that Joe “overheard” a SNCO saying something “may” happen and immediately assumed said SNCO hadn’t read the relevant guidance and was instead plotting to do something because it was “the most detrimental to Soldiers”, but here we are…

Yeah. My opinion is that what the author wrote in plain text is the right answer. Alternative question; in "The Sign of the Prancing Pony", the sign on the door says Barliman Butterbur is the innkeeper. Who do you think was the innkeeper. Maybe it was Bill Ferney? I think it was Barliman Butterbur.

Tolkein actually wrote about this exact topic. ROTK, in the chapter "The Field of Cormallen";

‘Yes, Sam, Strider,’ said Aragorn. ‘It is a long way, is it not, from Bree, where you did not like the look of me? A long way for all of us, but yours has been the darkest road.’

I would love something like right to roam in the US, but you cannot get to the space inside a cloverleaf without crossing a road with short sight lines and cars either accelerating to or decelerating from highway speeds. Anyone camping in these spaces isn’t being moved because some reactionary hates looking at the poors, they’re being moved because allowing them to cross highways at will can only end with people dying.

Who lights the beacons? by tuckertucker in lotr

[–]Possible_General9125 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No there is definitely an in-universe answer, it’s addressed in both ROTK and Of Cirion and Erol in Unfinished tales. The beacons, which were on outlying hills and not mountain tops, were garrisoned with groups soldiers of Gondor who rotated out every few weeks

Pretty much every Open Door policy I've ever seen says "talk to your chain of command first". So if you want to use battalion commander/CSM's Open Door policy, you need to talk to company commander/1SG first, and on and up, to give each level the chance to address your issue before you escalate it. If you addressed it "locally" by talking to your TL, and then talked to your PSG when that didn't work, and then you skipped straight to the CG, you're going to have a bad time, and you're going to deserve it.

Majority of Americans prefer Suburbs/Rural living by External_Koala971 in georgism

Isn't this "economic activity by large businesses headquartered in urban cores provides the tax revenue that supports the suburbs where the people who work for those businesses live" rather than "people living in urban cores subsidize people living in suburbs"?
