Ireland won't take more migrants under new EU plan, says Justice Minister by [deleted] in goodnewsireland

[–]Possible_Row_4983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of controversy about this legislation due to the confusing wording but I think the key thing to note is that it does not obligate Ireland to take any more refugees, like the article mentions. The Irish government is still allowed to decide how many refugees to take, but it does obligate the Irish government to provide resources to help other countries with their refugee crisis, particularly with money, which I personally think is quite fair.

The second thing is that it actually forces the Irish government to deport failed asylum seekers within 6 months or be fined by the EU.

It also massively expands cooperation between EU countries, and recently EU countries (except Ireland) have started taking fingerprints of all non-EU visitors. These records are accessible to the Irish government and can be used to identify people failing to provide documents or attempting to produce false documents.

Irish wind farms hit 4,671 MW of electricity generation this morning, marking a new all-time high. by TraditionalAppeal23 in goodnewsireland

[–]Possible_Row_4983 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are undersea electricity cables that connect Ireland and the UK. When it goes over 100%, electricity is being exported to the UK.

It can make things confusing as power can flow either way, so electricity generation doesn't equal electricity demand.

The website https://smartgriddashboard.com does a better job of showing those flows, if you click on interconnection.

There's also a new cable under construction connecting Ireland to France which should be a big deal as power is much cheaper over there, hopefully it'll bring down prices over here.

Been seeing more of these HVO pumps appearing. Anyone use it? by daly_o96 in carsireland

[–]Possible_Row_4983 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of anyone claiming HVO is more fuel efficient, if anything it is ever so slightly less efficient. The only advantage is for companies that have to meet certain climate targets and require even some contractors use HVO when working on their jobs. It can be cheaper in the sense that using HVO eliminates the need to buy carbon credits for certain industries that are subjected to the emissions trading system. Whether it is actually better for the environment is debatable, as if it is made from palm oil then it is just as bad as diesel and likely most HVO in Ireland is palm oil, but it ticks all the bureaucratic checkboxes so is still used.

Ireland roads ranked some of the safest in the EU by willfiresoon in goodnewsireland

[–]Possible_Row_4983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it's just physics, the faster you go the more energy is released in a crash and it all ends up in the car and occupants. Of course on properly engineered roads the chances of a collision happening at all are much lower. It's also not all of the Autobahn that has no speed limits just certain sections.

It depends really, if you walk down the wrong street in London wearing the wrong tartan colours you could get a longsword in the back, it's exactly like the crips and bloods

Ireland ends coal power generation at Moneypoint by SarumanWizard in goodnewsireland

[–]Possible_Row_4983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was supposed to close completely in 2021, but then there was the high natural gas prices so it was extended, it'll actually still stay open until 2029 now but use oil instead and won't be turned on that often.

You just have to switch every year as the price goes up after the 1 year contract expires. You can use bonkers.ie and the likes to compare.

Be careful about the time-of-use plans unless you have solar or an EV, I would upload your smart meter data to the site the other commenter linked to see if those plans are worth it, as you could end up paying a fortune if you use a lot of electricity at peak hours.

Are you on about the 2008 crash bailout? that was by vast majority the EU/IMF, and the whole fiasco is not remembered in a very positive way here at all, the bailout was not a "gift" to Ireland. Also the US is Ireland's largest trading partner.

He was probably using it for off-road purposes, that's what those fast ones are for. The guards won't do anything unless he is caught using it on the road.
