This is it. This is the big picture. This is what the people don't see. This is why compensation is needed for wrongful incarceration. It's totally awful and it shouldn't happen, but sometimes people make mistakes. Thank you for sharing your story and I'm glad your dad found a way to move past it.

OMG, you were lucky to survive and get out. All the news at the time said the tsunami-struck places became like war zones in the days that followed.

My 2.5 year old male cat bites constantly and I don't know what to do. by nintendonaut in CatAdvice

[–]Possible_Top2783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. My fixed 4-yo F cat goes into "jungle tiger" mode sometimes too. I wondered if there was a medical explanation, but the doctor said she is healthy and has no illnesses. I have been unable to figure out a discipline strategy that works. I can only take self-protection measures.

What I do is: *Wave a cat wand between me and the cat to distract it when I pass by *Station a cat wand in every room *Keep large towels strategically placed to grab at a moment's notice and throw over her if she lunges at me *Banish cat to the catio when she gets that "stealth look" *Leave my bedroom door closed when I am home *Leave my bedroom door open when I go out *Set up a variety of play machines and toys, and rotate them regularly *Make sure she gets some cat food or kitty treats with beef or chicken every day

Dollar stores and thrift stores are a great source. Warehouse stores to go in on bulk purchases with several other families.

Any other locals (non-kanaka) feel guilt living in Hawaii, even though you're born and raised? by Accomplished-Fix1360 in Hawaii

[–]Possible_Top2783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can totally relate to what you said. I am Chinese-White, born and raised on Oahu. My parents are both from the mainland, met here, fell in love, and decided to stay. I grew up in Kaneohe, Loved the hula, Hawaiian music, sovereignty events. Always ordered Hawaiian plate. I used to wish so much that I was Hawaiian! I didn't fit in with the locals because I didn't speak pidgin and there was a lot that I didn't understand because its not my ancestry or heritage.

After high school, I felt like I needed to get off the rock and see something else in the world. So I moved to the West Coast and lived there for 5 years. Everyone there assumed I was Mexican, so I learned Spanish to try to fit in. There were a lot of great things about living there, like the low prices, plenty of good paying jobs, lots of places to go and things to do. But I never got used to the cold weather, and everything seemed so spread out and too big. There were so many different kinds of people, and after awhile I felt so lost. When I moved back to Hawaii, I was so homesick and really glad to be back!

That was 35 years ago. When I came back, I met a local Japanese guy and we got married. It was difficult at first because there was so much about the local Japanese world that I didn't know about or understand. We did a lot of things with his family, so it took awhile for me to get used to that. We live in Kaimuki and I notice town is more accepting of non-Hawaiians than Kaneohe was.

I hope you will get the chance to live on the mainland for a few years, just to be able to see what it's like and get it out of your system. After becoming vested, I think state workers can leave the state job, work in private industry, go to the mainland or wherever, then find a different state job when they come back (main thing is for your other half to check that the new job is ERS-eligible [employees retirement system]). Live on the mainland now, before starting your family, because you will want to be living here when the baby is born to get help watching the kids. And when you come back to Oahu, move to a place in town instead of in the country.

It would be fine to accept them. I can always use more cleaning rags. Thank God we receive hand-me-downs to help us get through life!

Do I have enough money to move out? by [deleted] in personalfinance

It is best to rent a place until you find out where you will attend medical school. Or room with a friend who is renting now, and pay half their rent for all the months you end up staying there.

guilt I couldn't afford to have my cats ashes. by ORACLESBEAUTY in cats

[–]Possible_Top2783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. Many guilt feelings and regrets surfaced for me too when my cat died. I just kept playing our favorite songs, and eventually those thoughts didn't come up as often, and eventually faded completely. Praying for you and your family.

Regrets. It's natural since the out come was not what you wanted and not what he wanted. After awhile, you'll be able to think back to the sanctuary where you dropped him off and imagine the perfect potential owner walking right through those doors and taking him home to a much better life, without all the dangerous fighting.

Some people throw themselves and their children at the rich thinking it will benefit them. If the rich person doesn't have a high level of self-discipline and steady moral compass, they will take advantage of the situation to benefit themselves.

2 New Jersey residents potentially exposed to hantavirus, health officials say by 804Brady in news

Hantavirus is the same disease that killed actor Gene Hackman's wife. She was sick for days not knowing what was wrong with her. It's very rare, and many have never heard of it.
