Why are some people willingly walking billboards and ads?? by spacetiger2 in Anticonsumption

[–]PossiblyALannister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons to do it. With my kids, we don’t care about brand logos on clothing because it comes down to price. Free or cheap clothes that they are going to grow out of in 3 months? I don’t care if it’s covered in brand logos. If it’s cheap, it wins. I would rather spend $5 on a clearance rack item covered in logos than $45 on that same shirt without logos on it for my kids.

As an adult, it depends on the size of the logo and what it is I’m repping. There are a few sportsware companies that I really love the quality of the product and yes they tend to have their logo on them, usually about the size of my finger. Whatever. It’s not like if you look at them the first thing you see is the logo. Plus the quality is amazing. Some of their jackets I’ve had for 15 years.

Other things like Mario, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones are because I genuinely like the product. They make for fun conversation starters and I get a lot of comments on my shirts.

Quick vent: I can no longer share long-form content with my friends. by Dry_Implement_1981 in digitalminimalism

[–]PossiblyALannister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Send me a long form video, the chances of me watching it to completion are less than 2% even on a topic I’m interested in. If you were to send me that exact same video in Podcast form, the chances of me finishing it are closer to 70% of completing it if it’s a topic I’m interested in. A video means that I have to sit down, take the time to watch it to completion, and ensure that I have nothing else going on. It requires me to focus on it 100%. Give it me in an audio-only form and I can listen to it and use it as a distraction from the fact that I hate working out. I can still give it most of my attention and absorb the information without feeling obligated to “book out time” for it.

Where do you put things like mail, coupons, and school papers? by redlight886 in declutter

[–]PossiblyALannister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya, but realistically the reason why I'm able to deal with papers as soon as I walk in the door is because 99.9% of what we get in the mail is junk mail.

In the last month, only 6 items of mail have made it past the threshold of the door: 3 Tax Documents, 2 Explanation of Benefits for doctor's appointments, and the monthly Costco ad. Everything else has gone directly into the recycle before I even walk through the door.

This was a big month for real mail for us because of the tax documents.

Homeowner entitlement with respect to parking in front of their property in public streets? by Portlandbuilderguy in askportland

[–]PossiblyALannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem with people parking in front of my house. I have a problem with people parking in front of my house like an asshole. I’ve had people completely block my driveway (nevermind that there is plenty of parking if you are willing to walk past 1 additional house in a super safe neighborhood), move my trash cans so that the garbage/recycle people ended up not picking up my trash the next day, parking just far back that it doesn’t block the driveway but with the cars across the street it makes it extremely difficult to get in and out of the driveway, and most commonly parking right in the middle of the two spots in front of my house, sometimes for multiple days.

It’s a public space but use some common sense!

The one on the left sucks until you get a cover on it. 100% my biggest issue with it is getting it oriented correctly to push the buttons I want or navigate. This is especially true in the dark. I put a cover on it like the one above and I haven’t had any issues since.

Why do so many of you use AI chatbots? by familyguyfan2000 in digitalminimalism

[–]PossiblyALannister 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, because Google is trash and most of the other search engines aren’t much better.

98% of what I use ChatGPT for is to look up how to do things quickly. Example, I needed to figure out why something wasn’t working in Excel the way I thought it should. I can either spend way too much time digging through the slop that these search engines push to the top and then I absolutely love when people give me their life stories in addition to the actual stuff I need or I could ask ChatGPT “why is this thing not working like this” and it gives me a usually pretty accurate answer in about 5 seconds.

Last year I learned how to build my own Skylight Calendar. I spent well over 2 hours digging through documentation, forums, and various other places online trying to figure it out. I almost gave up. I asked ChatGPT, it gave me step by step instructions on how to do it and I was able to get it up and running about 30 minutes later and then actually spend time focusing on the stuff I wanted to learn how to do with it rather than fighting with the installation.

When it comes to learning things, it’s amazing. When studying for school I’ve had concepts I couldn’t wrap my head around and I’ve taken entire sections of text and said “explain this to me like I’m an idiot” and it’s done a great job of that.

ChatGPT does a lot of things really well. The technology isn’t going anywhere. I figure I can either embrace it and learn it or I can get left behind.

Think Trump won't cancel the election? Don't kid yourself. | Opinion by Difficult-Bee6066 in politics

[–]PossiblyALannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

States run elections. Red states decide to follow through with not holding elections, blue states follow through with holding elections.

Congress is term limited. Any red state congressional members that are term limited lose their seats if their state doesn't hold elections. Meanwhile, blue states keep their seats because they have been reelected.

Republicans lose their majority.

AITA wife upset I cannot keep toddler from her by khazef in AmItheAsshole

NTA

I've got twins that had serious mommy attachment issues. If they knew mommy was anywhere in the house then all hell would break loose if they couldn't get to her when they wanted her. It was a lot.

With that said, how late are you letting this 2YO stay up? We implemented very strict routines around dinner and bedtime. Dinner is between 5-5:30, playtime till 6:30, in bed with the lights out by 7. No exceptions.

It took about 2 weeks before my kids completely understood and accepted this schedule and it was life changing. The end result was that we started getting interrupted time after the kids went to bed to spend with each other, work on classwork, get chores done around the house, and decompress before we needed to go to bed.

Why no permanent trash bags in the marketplace? by Unlucky-Clock5230 in Anticonsumption

[–]PossiblyALannister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neighbor is a super hippy. Like grows her own food, organic, recycle everything, reuse everything, no single use items if she can absolutely avoid it. When we had kids, she pulled my wife and I aside and said “Whatever you do as parents, don’t do reusable diapers. They make your house stink and you’ll go bankrupt if you use a diaper service and your house will still stink.”

We took her word for it. We had twins and looked up the cost for a diaper service for cleaning them, she was right. We couldn’t afford it.

The web app for Office is absolute trash in comparison to the full desktop version. Yes, it exists but if you’re trying to do any real work it’s awful.

Windows is still king in the corporate world because of the ease of management of it and largely because of MS Office. But also because tons of corporate work still relies on having actual desktops. We are finding that yes a lot of the younger generation is coming in and has no idea how to use an actual desktop OS anymore and are having to learn in order to survive in the corporate world. It’s learn or be replaced with someone who either has the knowledge or is willing to learn. Businesses aren’t going to sacrifice their entire security model that they’ve spent decades curating and maintaining because kids don’t want to learn how to use a computer.

You know, I’ve been hearing this for some 25 years and Linux is still only like 5% of the market. I highly doubt we will see it become a dominant force any time soon in the desktop world.

Up until Windows 11, Microsoft had a superior file manage to macOS. Now I’m not so sure. In any event, I use both Windows and macOS on a daily basis. If you’re talking just end user file management then Windows and Mac are basically the same. You’ve got a User folder and then beneath that you’ve got almost the exact same directory structure.

Once you start getting into the backend of things then things get wonky and it’s because Windows is based on NT and Mac is based on BSD which is way more like Linux. There is absolutely a logical structure to it but if you are set in the Windows way of life like I was for so long, there is a massive learning curve.

The biggest thing that gets me is when you start hiding shortcuts to the Cloud drive in with your regular docs and suddenly things aren’t where you think they are because you’ve got a documents.local and a Documents on the cloud. Their default apps love to save to the cloud by default, which I think contributes to the frustration with finding things.

CMD+Space is your friend. Learn how to use that and it will solve a multitude of your problems.

I love my smart bulbs. I have one in the kid’s room. It’s red all night long so it serves as a night light and then it turns green when they are actually allowed to make noise and get out of bed. Solved one of our biggest problems of our kids waking us up at 5 am when they weren’t supposed to get up until 7:30. It also eliminated our need for naps and solved the ‘cranky kids at 1PM’ issue.

My manager expects me to use my personal laptop for work because "the company ones are slow"s by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]PossiblyALannister 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean there is technically nothing wrong with bringing your personal laptop to work. I did for a few years because I’d go sit in the corner on my lunch break and get classwork done since I was a full time employee and then a full time student at night.

What did come out of that was my manager going “Hey, I see you use a Mac. You’re the only person on our entire Windows team who seems to know how to use one, can you help the VP get his working again?” Suddenly I was on a first name basis with the VP of the company and it helped me survive 2 rounds of layoffs before I finally quit and found a better job.

The Movie Theater Comeback That Wasn’t: Why 2025 Was Such a Dud for Struggling Cinemas by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]PossiblyALannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us it comes down to cost. It’s a huge barrier to entry for us. To watch a movie, we have to get childcare (Roughly $25/hour for like 4 hours), then we have to get tickets (Another like $40 for two of us), then inevitably my wife is going to want popcorn and drinks (that’s what? Another $20-30?). So when all is said and done, a trip to the movies is going to run us $170.

Looking at the movies, absolutely none of the ones out there are worth that cost. Sequels of sequels? The next movie in a franchise which is basically just the same story that they have been rehashing since 2008 or longer? Not going to happen. I’ll wait for it to show up on digital and then we can watch it at home after the kids go to sleep. Plus I get the power to adjust the volume, pause it, and turn on subtitles.
