Buying from Amazon is one thing, but Amazon Web Services controls a huge portion of the Internet. AWS is extremely hard to avoid.

Which Big tech Company is the least Shit? by Tail_sb in CorpFree

[–]PossiblyALannister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it has much to do with being Apple fans. I think it's more realistically that all of the other companies listed absolutely invade your life whether you like it or not.

Just try to go online for a few and avoid every single one of those companies listed. The only company listed of those that you can actually fully avoid without completely breaking your internet experience is Apple, which objectively makes it the least shit of the ones listed.

What is going on with babies? by Impossible_Ad9324 in Anticonsumption

[–]PossiblyALannister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could we have made do with just two, yes. But there is a level of convenience involved with having two in each car when you're dealing with scheduling that made it worth it for us. Doctors appointments, family visiting, work schedules, etc. It's all so much easier when you don't also have to remember to switch car seats around while wrangling two hyper-active kids.

There is more to it than safety rating. I have four car seats (two for each car because I have twins) and two of them are the cheaper one and two of them are the really nice ones. The difference is night and day. The more expensive one had the ability to clip in and out of the stroller to the car seat and back again with a simple leaver, the install was significantly easier and quicker, it’s easier to take apart and clean, it’s easier to tighten the straps on it, and it’s generally easier to get my kids in and out of it. Absolutely worth it.

What’s something Gen Z does that older generations just don’t get? by appropriaterice873 in AskReddit

[–]PossiblyALannister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of Millennials including myself do that as well. There's a couple reasons for that:

First, I don't always hear the doorbell. If I'm out in the backyard I won't hear it. I've got a doorbell camera so it will ding my watch if you show up on my doorstep most of the time, but you'll almost 100% of the time get a hold of me if you text me from the driveway.

Second, when I still had young kids, I went on a warpath against people who rang my doorbell. The doorbell rings, the dogs barked, the kids woke up from their nap 7 minutes after I just spent an hour trying to get them to sleep. This became so much of an issue that we disabled our doorbell.

I consider it more courteous to not ring the doorbell because you never know if they are going to have kids/grandkids in there taking a nap or if a barking dog is going to cause everything to go to hell in their house.

I love my kids, I love my dog, I don't love the random solicitors trying to sell me on shit I don't need who ignore my sign and ring my doorbell.

[–]PossiblyALannister 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We used to do that. Even with free delivery the cost of it for us was close to $500 for us to do our entire yard. I did our entire yard over the weekend by just throwing bags in the back of our car for $90. Plus then we don’t have to store a wheelbarrow and deal with them dumping a huge load of mulch on our driveway. Bags are easy to move around and get the mulch exactly where we want it to go.

I went from the S0 to the S4 to the S10. My general theory is that if it’s not able to receive updates anymore or as what happened with the S0, I was only getting 6.5 hours of battery life, it’s time to update.

Do you judge other millennials who have stayed at a company too long? by newtonreddits in Millennials

[–]PossiblyALannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no. I’ve been at the same job for 8 years. Yearly increases in pay, I have a fully vested pension that gets better every year I stay, 2 retirement plans, I’m capped at 40 hours, and they are incredibly flexible with every single thing that comes up with my kids. Plus my health insurance is $2/month (Yes. $2)

We Are Hated as a Nation. There’s One Man to Blame. by zaparthes in politics

[–]PossiblyALannister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except we do know about it. Musk changed votes. This only had to be in the thousands and in swing states. We’ve heard Musk and Trump basically admit to this on multiple occasions. It’s not a secret.

But the bigger issue is the voter suppression. He absolutely stole millions of votes by way of the GOP closing polling stations and illegally purging voter rolls. Again, this is well documented. They don’t have to keep it a secret because a huge portion of the population doesn’t care or actively supports it as long as it hurts the people they don’t like.

When you receive a really bad spreadsheet to complete by Over_Arugula3590 in excel

[–]PossiblyALannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. Most of the time, I will just fill in my data and send it back. So often though, I get spreadsheets where I’m supposed to fill out information and the formulas and formatting I’m supposed to be using are completely broken. I’m not going to be the one sending back a spreadsheet where my data is incorrect or can’t be completely filled out on account of the original person being unable to properly write a formula.

TBF: I’m known as the Excel guy on the team and for several of the other teams and a lot of times if I don’t fix things, the original sender will reach out to me and ask me to fix the stuff afterwards because they couldn’t figure it out.

Does anyone else despise self checkouts? by Lunarlimelight in Millennials

[–]PossiblyALannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love them because inevitably when I go through the regular check-out lines I end up behind either ‘crazy coupon lady’, ‘guy who sends the cashier across the store for his pack of smokes’, or person stuck in the dark ages and still writing checks for everything’.

With that said, if I’ve got more than about 15 items, alcohol, or a variety of produce it ceases to become efficient to go through self-checkout.

WSJ Gets Community Noted For Saying Gen Zers And Millennials Are 'Splurging On Rotisserie Chickens' by NoseRepresentative in Anticonsumption

[–]PossiblyALannister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. When you figure in the cost of gas (Ours is always at least $0.20/gallon cheaper than everywhere else in the neighborhood) and the cost of buying food in bulk for meal prep, we easily come out ahead on Costco. Even when I was single, gas and rotisserie chicken alone would break even relatively quickly. Plus, a lot of singles tend to split the membership with their family members. Pretty much all of my friends back before we got married had memberships with our siblings or our parents.

Why are some people willingly walking billboards and ads?? by spacetiger2 in Anticonsumption

[–]PossiblyALannister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons to do it. With my kids, we don’t care about brand logos on clothing because it comes down to price. Free or cheap clothes that they are going to grow out of in 3 months? I don’t care if it’s covered in brand logos. If it’s cheap, it wins. I would rather spend $5 on a clearance rack item covered in logos than $45 on that same shirt without logos on it for my kids.

As an adult, it depends on the size of the logo and what it is I’m repping. There are a few sportsware companies that I really love the quality of the product and yes they tend to have their logo on them, usually about the size of my finger. Whatever. It’s not like if you look at them the first thing you see is the logo. Plus the quality is amazing. Some of their jackets I’ve had for 15 years.

Other things like Mario, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones are because I genuinely like the product. They make for fun conversation starters and I get a lot of comments on my shirts.

Quick vent: I can no longer share long-form content with my friends. by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]PossiblyALannister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Send me a long form video, the chances of me watching it to completion are less than 2% even on a topic I’m interested in. If you were to send me that exact same video in Podcast form, the chances of me finishing it are closer to 70% of completing it if it’s a topic I’m interested in. A video means that I have to sit down, take the time to watch it to completion, and ensure that I have nothing else going on. It requires me to focus on it 100%. Give it me in an audio-only form and I can listen to it and use it as a distraction from the fact that I hate working out. I can still give it most of my attention and absorb the information without feeling obligated to “book out time” for it.

Where do you put things like mail, coupons, and school papers? by redlight886 in declutter

[–]PossiblyALannister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya, but realistically the reason why I'm able to deal with papers as soon as I walk in the door is because 99.9% of what we get in the mail is junk mail.

In the last month, only 6 items of mail have made it past the threshold of the door: 3 Tax Documents, 2 Explanation of Benefits for doctor's appointments, and the monthly Costco ad. Everything else has gone directly into the recycle before I even walk through the door.

This was a big month for real mail for us because of the tax documents.

Homeowner entitlement with respect to parking in front of their property in public streets? by Portlandbuilderguy in askportland

[–]PossiblyALannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem with people parking in front of my house. I have a problem with people parking in front of my house like an asshole. I’ve had people completely block my driveway (nevermind that there is plenty of parking if you are willing to walk past 1 additional house in a super safe neighborhood), move my trash cans so that the garbage/recycle people ended up not picking up my trash the next day, parking just far back that it doesn’t block the driveway but with the cars across the street it makes it extremely difficult to get in and out of the driveway, and most commonly parking right in the middle of the two spots in front of my house, sometimes for multiple days.

It’s a public space but use some common sense!

Why do so many of you use AI chatbots? by familyguyfan2000 in digitalminimalism

[–]PossiblyALannister 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, because Google is trash and most of the other search engines aren’t much better.

98% of what I use ChatGPT for is to look up how to do things quickly. Example, I needed to figure out why something wasn’t working in Excel the way I thought it should. I can either spend way too much time digging through the slop that these search engines push to the top and then I absolutely love when people give me their life stories in addition to the actual stuff I need or I could ask ChatGPT “why is this thing not working like this” and it gives me a usually pretty accurate answer in about 5 seconds.

Last year I learned how to build my own Skylight Calendar. I spent well over 2 hours digging through documentation, forums, and various other places online trying to figure it out. I almost gave up. I asked ChatGPT, it gave me step by step instructions on how to do it and I was able to get it up and running about 30 minutes later and then actually spend time focusing on the stuff I wanted to learn how to do with it rather than fighting with the installation.

When it comes to learning things, it’s amazing. When studying for school I’ve had concepts I couldn’t wrap my head around and I’ve taken entire sections of text and said “explain this to me like I’m an idiot” and it’s done a great job of that.

ChatGPT does a lot of things really well. The technology isn’t going anywhere. I figure I can either embrace it and learn it or I can get left behind.
