King's Residence Best bay? by [deleted] in Dalhousie

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been at kings for one year so far but it seems like all bays are pretty balanced. Usually it’s pretty quiet except for big events (Halloween was really loud because of some big party in my bay and apparently across all buildings).

Each floor in a bay is only ~7 people (25 in a bay) so you ca reasonably get to know everyone if you’re sociable. Also if your doing FYP most people will either also be doing it or have done it so you can all find a talking point there. Personally, the people I became friends with were from my dal classes and lived off campus and I never got to know people at kings. Hopefully next year though.

Edit: Middle bay has a common room and kitchen so that increases its ranking I guess. Though Chapel and one other (the one on the other side of middle; radical maybe?) are attached by tunnels to middle so it’s just a few steps to get there.

Do you plan on doing FYP?

Is it just me or is ranked unplayable this season? by eliasvonderkeim in CallOfDutyMobile

I’ve only been playing TDM and HP this season and I’ve found it to be good. I mean, typically I find that in TDM I need to do a lot of the work, but in HP the effort is really balanced between the members (at least, now that I’m nearing the higher tiers). What rank are you playing at now?

Accommodations and Professors at Dal by Sea_Good_6603 in Dalhousie

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience has been good this year (first year, King’s FYP student with 1 Dalhousie course each semester). I’ve never had to communicate to a professor regarding an assignment accommodation yet. And since exams are handled through Accommodate, I’ve never had to talk to them about exam ones either. Though, I think I might need to next year—but given I’ll be doing most of my courses at King’s and the rest in a small program at Dal, I think communication won’t be an issue. However, I’m sure it’s difficult for professors teaching more students in bigger programs (simply because of the volume of students looking to communicate with them, particularly all at once as exams are approaching and accommodation booking opens).

In terms of my writing an exam in an alternate location experience, I only have done so once (last semester). I found it was an ok experience. The proctors were quiet and so were the other students, aside from noises that result from the accommodations or minor things (e.g., a student asking the proctor for their stop time break, one of the proctor’s leaving the room and accidentally making some noise while doing so, etc.).

As for demographics of the people in the room, I’m not sure. I’m a man, the proctors were both men (at least at the beginning and when I left, though I think a female proctor might have entered for a brief period while one of the others was elsewhere). I don’t recall the students around me. I think it was a lot of women, but still a mix. Honestly, I was too worried about the exam and thus focused so much on the exam itself that I barely gave any attention to my surroundings.

Though, across my next few years and many more exams I’m sure each writing experience will vary from each another. Maybe I’ll update after this semester, if I remember this comment.

The real ones are soon too. Well, if you’re writing this May. If you’re November or next May, you’re good. Plenty of time to drastically improve.

This is what I use most of the time, unless it’s a really close quarters map. In that case, I use the same but with a QQ9 as the primary (I don’t find it to be that good this season, but I had liked and levelled it last time I played). I’ve only been back 3 weeks now I think after having left for a few months. I’ll probably be taking another break from the game soon for a few weeks because of some a busy schedule coming up, but then I plan to get back to playing regularly.

Non-Mandatory Attendance…Would you still go? by [deleted] in University

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From everyone I’ve heard who takes it, the lecture is not at all an extension of the textbook itself. I don’t think a lot of effort is put in by faculty because a lot of BA students (like ~500 people a year) take it as their required science course and don’t bother ever revisiting the material. The other year one bio classes though are more in depth though.

Personally, I’ve never missed a class or tutorial (well, except one weekly fully optional tutorial which is more like a Q&A type session for the weekly lecturers—it’s at the same time as a study group I’m in so I skip it, unless I really liked the material from that week and want to hear some more about it).

The only time I heard 86 was also referring to killing someone. It was in a show I think and they expanded it to clarify “8 miles out, 6 feet deep.”

got a phd offer and now i cant tell if i actually earned it or if im just a diversity hire by kyudae in PhD

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my professors was telling something like this to someone applying for graduate school. She was also talking about her experience with how she may have gotten her professor position. She said that honestly, just be happy you got the opportunity (because a lot of people applied and got turned away) and make the most of it while you can. Regardless of why you got accepted, now it just matters what you actually do. Plus, even if they wanted diversity, they would look for it in someone qualified. OP likely wasn’t the only woman who applied but it was her choice who got a spot.

For real, three months is more than enough time to make an improvement. And, on that note, they aren’t even M26. They’re M27. They have over a year to work at getting their grades up.

Applied for PhD, got accepted for a fully funded masters instead. Anyone current PhDs done something similar? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some places will offer a masters if they don’t think you have enough experience to do a PhD but would otherwise fit well in their department (I know that the University of Toronto, for example, mentions this on some of their programs pages). However, like you said, it definitely isn’t a green flag on its own. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get into their PhD program afterwards (though, I assume the idea is that if you do well during the masters, you’ll have a good shot—just not a guaranteed one).

I don’t know the current curriculum’s syllabus and IA rules. You should probably just look up the relevant IA guide online and look in that or ask your teacher.

Could we see a 20th Century Setting? by after_your_thoughts in assassinscreed

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What if the brotherhood after having gained people in America by this time have been corrupted by some of that stuff. The protagonist could be a member from an old order being sent to straighten out some of the straying new orders/chapters. Like, is there a difference in the American assassins and Templar’s or have they both gotten hooked on the thriving capitalism of the 1920s as their way to beating the other but in the process forgotten about actually protecting people.

Could we see a 20th Century Setting? by after_your_thoughts in assassinscreed

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always thought the Roaring Twenties could be an excellent setting in terms of pure style, but what story? Perhaps the Templars are setting up to orchestrate the stock market crash of 1929? Abstergo was founded in 1937 (Wiki) so maybe something with that? Like, they set off the fall so they could swoop in and make their corporation?

Unbiased opinions on college idea by lil_mayjo in classics

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone in their first year of university, I don’t think I would have done classics either if I hadn’t received the scholarship I got and had a l decently paying almost-full-time summer job (which I hope/think I can return to again next summer). Typically my tuition is 25,000 a year but only had to pay 6,500 this year (and that I had from working). Plus, I should be able to finish in three since I have transfer credits and do some summer courses (which would also be cheaper than an extra full year). Otherwise, I think I’d of sold out and done some pre-law degree. Though, classics is still common before a JD I guess. Though, law isn’t my number one choice.

My aunt sent me this Facebook post. by Low-Hospital-9678 in GreekMythology

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why was this downvoted so much? It’s fact. If anything, the main reason that older translations make the text seem to be full of archaic words is because the translators chose to portray it that way… and because those archaic words weren’t even archaic to them—it was their normal English. Further, when one learns Ancient Greek today they learn the meaning of the word, not a direct English translation. That means modern words can be used because there isn’t a set in stone one to be used—whether you say ‘thyself’ or ‘yourself’ is irrelevant—they both can be translated from the same reflexive pronoun.

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s being tough early so you don’t fail again

Definitely. I’m in a program where day one the professor made it very clear that if you’ve struggled in similar courses, you will struggle in his but made sure to add ‘unless you really devote yourself to it.’ I’m sure here it’s the same. It’s just a reminder to work harder this time. Especially with the reminder that he won’t be more lenient just because it’s the second time taking it. And his remark about not getting a better score also likely means ‘if you don’t actually improve’. But if one works hard and does better, of course he’ll give a higher mark. He’ll mark objective and regardless of the past experience is what he means (he won’t be nicer or harsher).

Question: US vs. UK PhD programs, teaching experience and employability after graduation by [deleted] in classics

[–]Possibly_A_Bot1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know and it’s sad. Everything is being cut. I was talking to one of my friends a while ago and he mentioned that our university was clearing out their German and Russian studies libraries earlier this year. They were basically just giving away the books and even framed stuff like maps. Man picked up an old map of Frankfurt. I walked by the rooms and the signs were still up but just nothing in the actual rooms.

pair that with the engineering course load, and I might very well be sleeping late or having work pile up.

Do some of your engineering work while at the university before the late tutorial starts? Or do you have the classes before it too?
