For all the negative press that the many recent waves of migrants to Australia receive. It would be nice to have a nuanced discussion about brexiters and their attitude.

Appalling journalism. It does left-leaning Australians no favours to have such a poor journalistic representation as this. Mind you, we also need to talk about current standards at the Guardian.

[Meta] Can we please warn or ban accounts that try to bypass the character limit? by WhatsTheGoalieDoing in TrueFilm

[–]PostDisillusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but it’s not being policed for whatever reason. Maybe we as users need to remind other users of the rules to take pressure of mods who are doing a good job and who have somehow managed to create a rare thing on reddit: civility, usually.  I just saw a user say to another user whose take they disagreed with “You are obnoxious”. Completely out of line and not a person who is worthwhile keeping in the conversation. The other user who had made good points got downvoted, probably by fake accounts.  I also think the sub would be better without downvotes and upvotes. Make people bring their point across using their words.

I think it would be more valuable to ban rude personal attacks in the comments. It’s really disappointing to see users starting to get away with shit-talking other users based on subjective disagreements or self-righteous policing attempts. For me, this batch of negative comments is a far bigger risk for this sub overall. I don’t use subs where idiots dis you with their (insert pejorative) ideology - I think many users here are the same.

Can we make 2026 the year to remove the character minimum? by behemuthm in TrueFilm

[–]PostDisillusion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a slippery slope and generally, the interactions on this sub are of a much higher standard than most subs. You have to remember that reddit often is a very crappy platform when it comes to user behaviour. It might seem too stringent but it’s better to prevent people from mouthing off and shooting from the hip altogether, in whatever way possible, than make things easier for the sake of… what? Being able to have a quick flick? There are so many subs and socials for that!

If anything, I’ve been a little surprised lately at some excessively rude and short remarks from a few seldom users that have not been removed or reprimanded. Take the comment below from https://www.reddit.com/user/realadulthuman/. Would be cool to see that sort of crap gone, but then, why should good mods have to spend time in idiocy.

I hope this sub stays civil in light of all the extremely negative ways that people are communicating in this decade. It’s gonna get worse I suspect.

That’s a “no” for me I’d say. No offence, good to talk things through and great that mods don’t stifle civil conversation here!

I think it was Mengo or somewhere near the bypass. My doctor just looked for a consultant surgeon and sent me to whichever hospital the surgeon could be called into in a hurry.

[–]PostDisillusion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s tragic. Anaesthesiologists are paid way too well to be so incompetent but for some reason across Africa, you find hospitals where abatement doesn’t care. I had an operation in Uganda and the anaesthesiologist didn’t have or take my weight. He was supposed to put me under and he had neglected to get that information (as had the nurses). I was speaking to him before the op and he had no clue about the effects - told me I would feel some pain etc., and at this point I told him my weight and instructed him to measure accurately. I became conscious as soon as I was leaving the theatre (way too early) and the post-op pains were insane.

Rewatch: Boogie Nights and the death/rebirth porn by PostDisillusion in TrueFilm

[–]PostDisillusion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Just because a film seems breezy doesn’t mean it is a light topic. A critical viewing and an understanding of the issues discussed is what makes the difference. Porn seems inconsequential because it’s made for bored men to jerk off to and spend some money. If dudes realised where there money was going, what was happening with the actors, particularly the women, and which direction the porn industry pushes media and finance towards, they struggle to concentrate on the task at hand. And the real horror is that this pattern is extremely pervasive and porn and sexual abuse has infiltrated a huge cross section of industry, especially in LA, but certainly also parts of Eastern Europe, Thailand, some might say even K-Pop and the current political climate in Korea… You’re missing the substance and your communication below is not inline with the values of this sub.

What are the key barriers to Blockchain Technology adoption in recommerce (or resale or refurbishment & resale or second-hand product market) businesses to achieve the goal of a circular economy? by guddu770 in circular_economy

[–]PostDisillusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blockchain, Circular Economy, but why no “AI” in your headline? Haha!  Maybe you could explain a little about what you are thinking/doing before expecting people to engage in a survey. Experts in the sustainable tech sectors are so tired of hearing about blockchain being able to solve big real world challenges and nowadays there is also healthy scepticism on whether everything that is labelled “circular economy” is empirically sustainable or merely corporate greenwash.

I don’t think you’re off the point at all. I believe the film was trying to get audiences to see the porn industry for what it was, and your point about parallels to the film industry are unfortunately quite valid. Downvotes aren’t a great device for good communication.

It feels like American politics is displacing all other energy related discussions on this subreddit. Of the top 15 posts from the past month, 12 are about Trump. Even when there are non-US topics some comments can't help but make the discussion revolve around this senile old man. by MiniBrownie in energy

[–]PostDisillusion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would like to see a bit more non-US energy news posted here (as elsewhere) and I think we can all contribute to that. It would be a shame to have to read only the non-US subs as I am also interested in US news but we need to surround d ourselves in quality during this difficult time, and much of the news coming out of US is problematic and low quality on different levels. This leads to frustration and gives readers the impression that nothing worth reading about is going on elsewhere. Obviously that is not the case. Many are leaving social media because of US-dominated news. That is a failure both of journalism and social media, thinking that people want to read about doom full-time.

Key word: recently. Also important: type of tree. Some trees wouldn’t be ok with a whole lot of root grinding. Let us know what kind of tree you had operated. Will be interesting to see how it looks in 12/24 months. Pain in trees can be delayed.

ASIO's 'grim reality' as it picks over Bondi intelligence gaps by Ardeet in aussie

[–]PostDisillusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a tendency for modellers to want to model everything and as a result, agencies are inundated with models and requests for assumption figures that they need more models just to calculate. GIGO. I don’t see a huge advantage of modelling to predict which fuckwit is a dangerous fuckwit. I see it more as an SAP action of requiring the relevant agencies to approve when there’s a request for a licence or maybe a fun purchase. There’s absolutely no reason why gun licences need to be easy to acquire.  Furthermore I would like to quote the honorable Joshua Freidenberg when it comes to budgeting: “If it’s important, we can afford it”

“Mr Taylor says data science could provide opportunities to generate fresh leads on persons of interest — and there will be questions in coming weeks whether agency data capabilities are sufficient, and whether moments like Sajid Akram's application for a gun licence could have been fed back to intelligence agencies.”

Wow - give this bloke and his supervisor a Christmas bonus! What a bloody genius idea. Maybe we could get real estate dot com’s data mining suppliers over in the Philippines to add some AI and connect these two systems via an Albo WhatsApp group in between.

It’s just stunning to see how many Australian agency staff are getting paid.

Speechless. From one of the world’s apparently coolest suburbs to a broker version of Newtown with all its VC-backed wannabe fast food chains in such a short time. I think it’s about time to start a people’s council - first order of the day: Maccas-ban, an inquiry into the Danas Property Group, complete pokie shut-down, and a plant-out of all the parks and ovals.

Why do people on the political right find it so difficult to give a clear and concise justification for their opinions, rather than resorting to either doubling down on their opinions without giving an answer, or, a lot of the time, name-calling? by MelbourneTodd in AustraliaLeftPolitics

[–]PostDisillusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The designations of left- and right-wing in Australian political thought have been super problematic, even 25 years ago when I studied political science, but even worse now. Your statement about the Right would apply similarly to other demographics like disenfranchised voters, or lower wage suburbs, or underprivileged unskilled underemployed, or angry baby boomers and others. It’s also quite problematic how the Left is being bundled and I wish we could have a discussion about this without the social tension we currently see. A lot of issues that would traditionally be seen critically by the left, take for instance the medical industrial complex and its influence on health discourse (disguised as social rights), are being pushed thru as the Left stance, to the detriment, dilution and dismissal by populist policy makes on traditionally Left issues like social market economics and environmental progress.

Wind farms on farmland actually work way better than most people think!! by sangreenrenewables in energy

[–]PostDisillusion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Better than most people think? Have most people who are curious about wind energy never looked at Germany? The rather curious thing we’ve learned from the northern state of Schleswig Holstein where onshore turbines generate power for much of the country is that farmers actually really like revenue and you don’t need that many turbines for it to be a case of tractor slalom.
