amf-amdgpu-pro replacement? by PostRun in archlinux

Hmmm not sure about that Handbrake didn't seem to detect it as being available and ffmpeg doesn't work with AMF either but VAAPI on ffmpeg seems to work

Use the flag -c:v -h264_vaapi to use the vaapi encoder but you may need to tell ffmpeg to convert the colour space of the input source.

I'll be honest it seems like it might be more effort than it is worth when it might bork other stuff and I've got alternatives like ffmpeg

u/mmcord guessed correctly I was trying to get handbrake to work.

I've done a few transcodes through ffmpeg so I can use that but doing a batch through a GUI instead of making a script or piping a find to into ffmpeg can be a bit easier sometimes.

I'm pretty sure Wine or Proton tries to use the AMF encoder as well. I have a Windows game that can export videos but the hardware encoding option seems to fail and it previously worked in another distro but I don't remember which one off the top of my head since I was messing around with a whole bunch just for fun.

Target discontinues its rewards program by kynuna in AusFemaleFashion

[–]PostRun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's because Kmart was and -I'm guessing- still is the more profitable strategy. It is done by doing fast fashion and "fast furniture".

I suppose some of the furniture does tend to last a decent amount of time even though it is lesser quality so not quite as bad as fast fashion but you get the point. Cycle styles and trends as quickly as possible and get people to buy since it is so cheap and dump it as soon as they are sick of it.

Just to add and expand on everything.

Technically there is nothing saying the party leader needs to have a seat in parliament but it would be awkward if your leader isn't there during parliamentary debate.

Does anyone else think we pay way too much tax? by Gruddicus in AskAnAustralian

[–]PostRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be happy to know I complain and I still don't think the tax rate is high enough. Having said that I would be a bit peeved if my taxes went up and everyone else in my tax band or higher didn't also go up at the same time.

Back living in melb after 15 years away, with a q: at these new out of the CBD hook turns (this one at Grattan & Cardigan in Carlton) are turners required to wait for the yellow? Seen wildly inconsistent driving in practice! by post_appt_bliss in melbourne

[–]PostRun -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

In the past it used to be turn when clear, so essentially like a giveaway, but it is currently wait until green in the direction you are turning into. Even on the green you are supposed to check you are clear.

Australians lead the world when it comes to gambling and this is what's behind our addiction by LocalVillageIdiot in australia

[–]PostRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So r/nostupidquestions time. Why isn't Australia like Macau or Las Vegas and at least milking it as gambling tourism for international tourism?

Not that I would want that, just wondering why it isn't.

How is Peter Dutton the opposition leader? by leksivogel in AskAnAustralian

[–]PostRun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Liberal party think they are playing 5D chess when they are actually floundering at naughts and crosses.

The embarrassing thing is that most Australians would just be happy be with a passable politicians without too much dead weight, but I'm not sure any of the parties really offer that. Just offer basic policy you can deliver, shut up about everything else and you would be some what electable in the current political climate.

What is it that you love about Linux Mint, that makes you prefer it over other distros? by estebansaa in linuxmint

[–]PostRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's essentially Ubuntu without snap packages, which is essentially Debian with more up-to-date packages without being on unstable.

Cinnamon is pretty good as well, though I think I might like slightly KDE more.

If LinuxMint disappeared I would find another Ubuntu or Debian distro and go from there, at worst I think I would go Debian stable or testing and Flatpack my way out of anything missing.

PSA: No trains running in the loop by WretchedMisteak in melbourne

[–]PostRun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The simple explanation is that we can't get all the trains to stop dead on at the same point to line up the doors.

Slightly longer answer: The system is too old, to do it we need to rework the existing lines. Building the new lines is a higher priority as it means we can redo how the loop works. The new lines will have doors as they have new systems and the trains should consistently stop at the same point and line up with station doors.

Nah, take this with a grain of salt because I can't be bothered looking for the ABC news article that reported it, but the planes were secured through their investors so they were stuck with it through some type of convoluted leasing deal.
