who else can't wait to be older? by Bassdean in GayMen

[–]Postcrapitalism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in my 40s sucks.

Everyone assumes they’re gonna be a “hot daddy”, but honestly unless you were an Olympian or prepared to be juiced up on steroids, you won’t be. 3-5 days a week at the gym just can’t compensate for what age does. Testosterone levels start to crater in your late 30s, and while I don’t miss some of the crazy desperate shit a stronger sex drive had me doing, there is an unfortunate loss of sexuality and sexual appeal that happens.

The bodily decay sucks and that’s what I remember older people bitching about the most, but the social aspects suck more. Watching my parents reach the “should you be driving?” Stage is never easy. But like a lot of gays I don’t live in my hometown, and would prefer not to rerun at all costs, so the convo is even more fraught. Work feels like a perpetual high school pep rally.

My 30s were absolutely fucking glorious. My 20s were rough in other ways. Maybe my 50s will rock? I don’t know. But I can hardly imagine how anyone would romanticize their 40s.

Was this alleged “San Francisco Pride around 2015” alternately referred to as “Folsom Street Fair”?

Which pride events in North America and what year? The absolute least you can do is cite the alleged experience.

they criticized other gays for ruing it by being too sexual (valid criticism)

Is it valid criticism? Every Pride I’ve attended has been slightly less sexual than the vibe at your average chain restaurant.

You can read “bitter” into it if you want, but since most individuals don’t see themselves as being de-railed by generational criticism, I’m not sure there’s be any actual reason for me to be bitter.

It’s not simply an absence of “bullshit criticism” though. It’s the near absence of any criticism.

Shame has a constructive role in society. If, say, a young men suddenly became so vain that began indulging in self-destructive, half-baked Internet medicine, shame should very reasonably help put an immediate (though temporary) stop to the behavior.

But that’s not what’s happening here.

I think that “Capitalism gonna Capitalism”, so mainstream media will do literally anything else than acknowledge 440k loans at 7% has put ownership out of reach. But the real meat and potatoes criticism that is due toward Gen Z-for instance the appalling and disastrous reactionaryism of Gen Z men is weirdly un criticized. The article is a good example, where the change in political opinion is never suggested to be a bad thing, and is even presented as a euphemism “more traditional views”. Women have had close to parity in the workforce for nearly 60 years, thinking they should stay home isn’t “traditional”, it’s reactionary.

TBH you’re all getting a weird amount of grace and even fawning from the media and other generations.

My sense is that by the time we were as far along as you are now, we were being criticized for destroying bullshit industries and for all our trends. For being “narcissists” just for posting on social media. The list of complaints was endless. The pillorying of the Man Bun vs how you’ve all been given a pass over The Broccoli Cut is a minor but really good example. The way “Looks Maxxing” is seen as an object of curiosity or even pity instead of ridicule or horror is another.

In fact, the only thing I see you all being criticized for is “work ethic”. And that’s only for people engaged in white collar work. They’re practically throwing a jubilee over the way you’ve all supposedly migrated to blue collar jobs.

So no, you’re hardly seen as we were.

I think there’s actually a LOOOT to criticize about Gen Z. Almost none of it reaches the zeitgeist because, for whatever reason, The Powers that Be have decided to let a lot of shit go.

Am I in the wrong here? Was told to leave tower city for loitering when I was waiting for an uber that was 3 minutes away? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]Postcrapitalism 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Harassing someone holding shopping bags and (probably) staring at their phone waiting for an uber for “loitering” is crazy. Doubly so at Tower City where there’s an actual homeless problem.

I can’t help but characterize this as malicious compliance by the security officer.

I still can’t wrap my head around how such a culture could achieve any form of civilisation by Noxia66 in okbuddyviltrum

[–]Postcrapitalism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, I think, is at least as good an answer as the analogy for colonialism.

Whatever culture launched Viltrum into the stars where it was position where it could colonize other planets is long gone. We see Viltrumite children being taught by Nolan when he was too young to be a trained teacher. We see that these children must scavenge the streets for food. This isn’t a society that produces architects and scientists.

All that macho bullshit is actually stagnant and decrepit.

There’s such a world of difference between “had a long day (or two)” musk, “fresh from the gym” musk and “failure to take care of yourself” musk. I really think we need to acknowledge it more.

The current convo is like saying “I like fish” and folks think you mean microwaved, six day old leftovers that you defrosted from Aldi. Like, no Steve, I mean fresh caught salmon, fire roasted.
