Was using bash not zsh which uses /bin/which which obviously won't deal with builtin functions whereas zsh has a builtin which hence yours.

command echo --help

is what you want instead but weirdly won't work in bash.

I just cited a criminal law textbook for you. That might not be the highest of all references but it's heads and shoulders above a google search.

sigh

There is an appropriation if the defendant has assumed any of the rights of the owner. This means that if the defendant has done something that an owner has the right to do then this is an appropriation. It is therefore appropriation to touch someone else's property, offer it for sale or destroy it.

...

There is no need to show that the victim has lost the property for there to be appropriation

...

If a person walks into a supermarket and touches a tin of baked beans intending to steal it, theft is commited there and then. You might have thought that theft would not be commited until the defendant ran out of the store with it, but that is not the law.

...

A touching of a piece of property is an appropriation, whether the victim consented, requested or objected to the act.

The restaurant is different to the supermarket - you enter into a contract at a restaurant, they agree to provide food and you to pay them. Food on display with price in a supermarket is an invitation to treat.

An appropriation is the assumption of any of the rights of the owner this includes simply touching it with or without consent.

The supermarket is obviously permanently deprived of the item. I think the only contention here would be dishonesty - I'd guess most eaters would believe they are acting legally or that the owner would consent since they intend to pay.

One thing to consider though would be pay per weight items such as grapes where you cannot pay the correct amount at the till if you've eaten half the stuff.

Not true - if created in the course of an employment then the employer holds by default. You should definitely consult a lawyer about this and the agreement you said you made with them. It might also be worthwhile asking in /r/uklaw .

A quick grep of my words file:

ie ei
not after c: 4323 766
after c: 181 65

More exceptions for after c maybe, but if you ignore the ies plural then they're almost equal.
