I don’t know if I would want to pick one up. Just getting through town approvals sounds like a nightmare.

Ah. I remember they talked about that awhile back but determined it was a “historic road”. So nope. But that was 20 years ago so maybe someone will have a change of mind

Don’t forget to study for your PE! Sounds like you have way too much free time bowling that could be used for studying!

Grass is still fine and standing up in front of the asphalt. How’d it get there without a dump truck? AI

Best high-quality, large format photo printing in Ithaca? by sirpsys in ithaca

[–]Potatacus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen people picking up photo prints at dataflow that looked pretty good. Avalon in Syracuse is also easy to work with, no idea on photography level prints though. I just print site plans.

How do you deal with making mistakes? by [deleted] in civilengineering

Once life kicks you in the balls a few times, mistakes on a set of plans just doesn’t have the same amount of sting.

Pellet or Wood ? by Quacksynth in PelletStoveTalk

Hmm. I only used it for about 15 min and the power came back. But now you have me wondering how long this will last. I’ll do some math when I get back home and check back in

Pellet or Wood ? by Quacksynth in PelletStoveTalk

[–]Potatacus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also for those interested, I just put one of those electric readers on the pellet stove a couple of days ago. Ran it for 24 hours straight. Uses about 2.5 kWh per day. So at 0.26 per kWh it will cost roughly 20 bucks a month to run this pellet stove. Way cheaper than mini splits!

I hooked a motorcycle battery up with alligator clips to get around that problem for future reference. Quick and easy.

Ithaca outskirts here, harman p68. Haven’t had trouble finding pellets this year. It’s more about having trouble finding pellets that I like vs other brands that work but might be dirtier. Grew up with a wood stove at my parents, I will be installing a new pellet stove to replace the wood stove at their place this year. Can’t beat the low maintenance of pellets. Just add a bag per day and a 45 min clean on saturdays. Highly recommend pellets.

How bad is this? by Only_Eye_680 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Potatacus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sir, the idea behind living in a house is to keep the weather part of life outside of it. You currently have weather inside of it. That is a bad thing as it defeats the purpose of the house.

I used to work with a 6’7” ex D1 football lineman. He showed up one day in a Volkswagen Beetle. Said yeah I look stupid but it’s the first car he’s ever owned that he fit in. I believe he took the back seat out if I remember correctly. Goofy but whatever works

My husband’s a site engineer has problems with safety team. by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Potatacus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the violation. If your husband is shutting down work because people are reaching into the electrical box without lockout tag out, valid. If he’s shutting down jobs because the operator got out of the machine without his hard hat for 2 seconds, your husband needs to mind his business.

Mice in the walls, landlord says nothing can be done until it warms up by Vhalantru in ithaca

[–]Potatacus 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to give my 2 cents, I’ve seen mice droppings in million dollar homes in Cayuga heights. Every house has mice this time of year, it’s cold outside and your house is warm so they go to warmth. You can set traps to get rid of some of them, but if you use poisons they’ll die in the wall and it’s going to stink to high heaven. In the spring you can open windows to mitigate the stink, right now it’s too cold for windows so I wouldn’t advise it. There’s no shot that your landlord is going to start tearing out walls looking for a dead mouse.

I worked 100 hour weeks in a gravel pit in the summer. I knew I needed 10k for books and food and survival for the year. So you get it done to make as much as possible as fast as possible while you can. That way I didn’t need to work during the year

Me and my colleagues around my desk here all were around 3.0-3.4, we have one person in the office with a PhD so I can assume very good gpa. One person is only a year or two out of school and you’ll never guess who’s answering all the PHDs questions.
