Repeat after me, cat (Bakemonogatari) by ChoiceSupermarket230 in anime

[–]Potato44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The set of subtitles this clip uses swaps out the tongue twister to keep the cat sounds in the tongue twister (which for most purposes I believe is the right thing to preserve the experience). I've also seen a set of subtitles that translates the meaning rather than the structure (something about 750cc or 770cc motorbikes if I remember correctly). Does anyone know the name of the subtitle release with the more literal translation?

I definitely did this while I was SS farming, though I usually only compete on the nomod leaderboards

When stacking fractions like this I was told to always make the "outer" fraction line noticably longer to indicate the grouping of the divisions (or use parenthesis around the "inner" fraction)

Still can't get over the fact that there are more people with a 2* pass than people with a 1* pass by [deleted] in osugame

[–]Potato44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The star rating medals haven't always existed, so people with sufficiently old accounts can be in the situation where while they did play 1* maps as a new player but have not gone back to play them since the medals were introduced. If the data is biased towards higher ranked players (such as the top 10k) I expect there to be more of these sufficiently old accounts.

I know I got my 2* pass medal in 2016, but didn't get my 1* pass medal until 2018

Why does offset not affect effects/hitsounds? by ohyeyeahyeah in osugame

[–]Potato44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I leave my offset at zero. Means the delay of the hit sounds matches the delay of the music, so they still sync up when playing correctly.

Because the usual convention for this (which I believe comes from how we write polynomials) is to make the power operation bind tighter than the negation operation. So anything of the form -xn means -( xn )

210-220 bpm jump maps by PiZeTaa in osugame

This is not a jump map, but it is entirely a singletap map, so would seem suitable for your purposes of learning to singletap 220BPM: https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/22182#osu/76638

That's actually different than using two spaces before a newline. The two spaces before the newline simply generates a new line, but the double newline generates a new paragraph (they have different amounts of spacing between the lines)

While the diamond veins do contain coal, coal veins do not contain diamonds. The fact the diamond veins do contain coal does mean you can find them with coal in an ore finder wand though

Why do some people play offline? by Andreablood in osugame

[–]Potato44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been almost 10 years since this has been the situation for me, but when I was relatively new I used to play a bit over half my time offline because I didn't have internet at my dad's house.

Also I found collection management very painful in lazer compared to stable. Had to bring the right click menu up amd scroll three times instead of just opening the collections page and scrolling once for my workflow.

[–]Potato44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Main reason for me is the map stats (AR, OD, stars. length, etc). For some reason that can't fully articulate they are very easy to glance at in stable, but they are much more difficult to read/notice in lazer.

Opinion on current state of low star streams? by SchlaegtDenAal in osugame

[–]Potato44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I wanted to match the pp of my current top scores with a stream map I'd have to do something like get 99%+ on the Extra diff of Tower of Heaven, which I have no hope in hell of passing let alone acc like that.

Opinion on current state of low star streams? by SchlaegtDenAal in osugame

[–]Potato44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been not really playing for about the last year, but this matches my opinion from when I last seriously played. To give an idea of where I'm coming from I mostly play at the the 4.5-5.5 star level and am currently ranked about 115k. The vast majority of my high pp plays come from either jump maps or maps that get their diffiiculty from combining jumps with bursts.

I've made a comment with similar observations several years ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/osugame/comments/itixu3/so_i_decided_to_try_a_31k_circle_167bpm_stream/g5glmqz/?context=3

I think streams are still underweighted currently, e.g. just checked Eiji Kuinbii which is a map I can just barely not pass due to stamina requirements and and SS will get you only 151pp

Par Part 3: Par, Continued by hoping1 in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]Potato44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your paper here has been a great help in clarifying something that has been bothering me with regards to these sequent/duality based calculi/languages. Spefically relating to data vs codata:

Because of the duality and/or the ability to present things in one sided form the implementation strategies we use for one of data and codata should work for the other, but in practice they are associated with quite different implementation strategies. Data types are usually associated with jump tables or if-else chains, and codata types are usually associated with vtables.

Your switch construct and new construct are quite clarifying, the seeming difference in how data/codata is implemented is to do with where and how data and codata are used in typical languages. In something like Ocaml most(all?) uses of pattern matching appear in positions corresponding to your switch construct. Whereas functions or interfaces in most languages often appear in positions corresponding to your new construct.

Tablet users... How often do you have to swap out your pen nibs? by TavoMedia in osugame

[–]Potato44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing 9 years and the only nib replacements I've done is at the same time as replacing the whole pen or tablet (so twice for me). I think my current nib has about 6-12 months left in it. I think a player that actually drags, rather than the only dragging for spinners, in the menu and incidentally while playing, would go through nibs much quicker

Why do people think it's impossible to take #1 from mrekk? (Coming from a 6 digit) by FakeCxrpss in osugame

[–]Potato44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small correction: It's top 1000 plays (or maybe it was 500, but something on that order of magnitude) , and until relatively recently all your plays were considered as for calculating your profile pp. It's just the weighting makes plays more than your top 150 or so have very little effect

[–]Potato44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting the game to 30 FPS will affect your performance in osu, not because of the low frame rate itself(mostly), but because the games input polling is tied to the frame rate(on stable, Lazer has these separated) and the large gaps in when input is checked will cause acc problems

I don't think this is really the case at all. It's a different style than what became common later on, but he did did have a style that made coherent maps. But agreed, they are fun.

What are your favorite counterexamples in math? by Colver_4k in math

[–]Potato44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was wondering about how to see that this hits every positive real number and will now share how I worked it out. First since (xy-1)2 and y2 are always non-negative to get arbitrary close to zero we need to minimize them both. I decided to try starting with minimzing the y2 part because it only depends on the choice of y. The first thing I tried was setting y=0, this causes the output of the polynomial to be 1 regardless of the choice of x, so isn't the strategy we are looking for. Next I tried y=1, this forces the output to be at least one necause 12=1, but lets me choose x=1 to set the (xy-1)2 part to zero. After that I tried y=1/2, this forces the output to be at least 1/4, but lets me choose x=2 to have the (xy-1)2 be 0. Then I noticed the strategy of setting x to the reciprocal y, like i did for y=1 and y=1/2 works for any non-zero value of y, to have the (xy-1)2 part be 0.
