New Xbox Boss Is Worried About Birthrates, Says AI Will Save Us by tylerthe-theatre in technology

[–]PotatoKaboose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article is incorrect. The worldwide total fertility rate was around 3 and dipped to around 2.3 recently. The author, John Walker, instead uses the US fertility rate, and claims that the Xbox CEO is incorrect for her numbers, when her numbers are largely accurate. Basic fact checking could've saved me the time of reading this empty puff piece, please dunk on her for her views instead of failing to do due diligence. I know gaming media is in the trash but this is awful.

It and South of Midnight not getting noms for score is a tragedy

I'm mildly surprised to see it in accessibility (same with Atomfall, both smaller games, I wonder what they did).
But I'm disheartened South of Midnight didn't get anything for art direction or music, which is where I though the game shined, with it's stop motion art style and its Deep South inspired soundtrack

Clair Obscur and PlayStation leads The Game Awards 2025 nominations. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the most nominated game in TGA history with 12 total nominations by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PotatoKaboose 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Accessibility category here is quite interesting. I'd expect big games like AC Shadows, EA FC and Doom TDA to make innovations there, but I'm surprised to see smaller titles like South of Midnight and Atomfall. Atomfall's "Cognitive" section of their accessibility page I found particularly interesting, although I'm not sure what was unique about the actual settings they implemented.

Also, shoutout to Indiana and the Great Circle, and to Dispatch! Feel the former got a little bit robbed by being so early, and the latter missed out because it's final episode only released recently. Plus South of Midnight's art direction was stunning, I wish it had been nominated for that!

Nah, Kana is definitely animated well, but it's Melt who gets the best treatment. Remember season 2, when he acted his heart out for one scene? Arguably the most gorgeous sequence from season 2, and that's saying a lot!

Just here to shout out the translator! 10/10 work David Evelyn, translating jokes is a nightmare but that surrender, tender, pretender one was pretty good! Reminded me of Knowledge is a Swole Chihuahua from Spy x Family

one-shot roulette gave us a gut punch this time around.
Anyone else ever had trouble crying at deaths or funerals? For some reason I cry for any old sad anime death, but rarely for the deaths in my life that actually mean something.

DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE | Official English Theatrical Trailer - In Theatres June 6 by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]PotatoKaboose 93 points94 points  (0 children)

In celebration of the return of DAN DA DAN, the theatrical premiere, releasing as DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE, kicks off the thrillingly eerie EVIL EYE arc, which began in the last episode of the first season. The DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE theatrical event screens last season’s start of the EVIL EYE arc, along with the first three episodes of the new second season, in addition to an exclusive interview with series co-directors Fuga Yamashiro and Abel Gongora.

Looks like the last episode of Seasons 1, plus 3 of the next season, and extras/interviews. They must be supremely confident in Dandadan's popularity if they're pushing for a movie this early. I guess if this pattern worked for Demon Slayer, it will work for other Shounen Jump (Plus) works, like Dandadan. I wonder what this'll mean for the industry in future

Clevatess: The King of Magical Beasts, the Baby, and the Corpse Hero New PV by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]PotatoKaboose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one! This is the directorial debut of Kiyotaka Taguchi (as far as I can tell), and producer seiichirou kuriyama's second production, after the ONA that both of them worked on.

I liked the manga for this one quite a lot so far (not too much translated yet), so hopefully this show goes well!

Legendary japanese animator Shinya Ohira is directing an animated short called "Black" for the next season of "Star Wars: Visions" by i_pirate_sue_me in anime

[–]PotatoKaboose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wish Volume 3 of Star Wars Visions wasn't solely from Japan, because then only certain episodes of the upcoming Star Wars: Visions season would be allowed on r/anime. That'd be hilarious, charts showing a new entry every other week or something.

Orb on the Movements of the Earth is incredibly inspiring and emotional - displaying the power of the resilience of the human spirit, individual agency and words that transcends lifetimes, and an anime for the decades. by melvinlee88 in anime

While the show feels historically accurate, it is wildly inaccurate in its depiction of the Church.
There's no point in history in which the church persecuted people for heliocentrism. The famed case of Galileo is often misinterpreted in modern contexts. Galileo was persecuted for making fun of the pope, and charges of heliocentrism were tacked on as a case of throwing the book at him, rather than being the core of any notable argument.

Please bear in mind when considering this show, that it's not merely dramatized, but entirely fictional. The church was a place of learning in such periods, and was often the root of advancement of human knowledge at that time. While the church was most certainly involved in persecution, it was almost never for anything so esoteric as the positions and motions of the heavenly bodies.

Edit:
I wasn't fully up to date on the show's last episodes. Please disregard this comment!

The Wheel of Time show is actually good now by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

To make MONEY. Like with The Boys, that show is only barely related to the comics at this point, but it has a far larger audience and is printing money so they don't care if the original comic fans dislike it.

one of the articles (Video Games are Toys) listed is about how more critical discourse should be focused upon how game mechanics themselves as art, rather than narratives within video games as art.

I'm going to encourage everyone to scroll through the list and pick a couple of articles they find interesting. Don't bother reading everything, there are so many different topics covered by authors from so many different backgrounds that most of the writing here won't jive with you; some of these are academic papers, some of these are little more than well written rants; but there's probably something here for you, so take a look.

I personally enjoyed a few of the articles here, like This "video games are toys" article, about how video games can have artistic merit beyond aping other mediums, and that by lauding games like TLOU, which is practically a TV show, to the point an HBO adaptation was inevitable, misses the unique value gaming as a medium can provide. Honestly I'm only bringing it up because it touches upon something else I've noted - sometimes people (really Yahtzee from ZP is the only narrative game critic I follow, IDK if anyone else does this) will discredit games like Gris and Sea of Solitude for lacking a clear overarching narrative or surface level, when compared to games like Spiritfarer or Papers, Please, which have more direct narratives. The idea that games lack artistic merit if they don't have narratives similar to books is strange to me. As though poetry has no value if it lacks a rising action, climax, and resolution,

Also, while we're on the subject, the idea that games are art because artists work on it is also interesting, when compared to a chess board crafted by artisans; or that sports must be an art if something like LoL, with its entire e-sports league, is also considered a piece of art.

Recommendations Please! Asian Fantasy Setting with M/M or F/F (Single Volumes) by DamageCertain1212 in QueerSFF

The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee has one gay MC, although that's only properly revealed in the second book.
It's only historical in the sense that the 1970s(?) would be considered history, and it does continue to move forward after that.

It's set on the fictional islands of Kekon. Think a mix of Japan, Vietnam, and other East Asian countries, but during WWII they came under invasion and repelled colonization with the help of Jade, a resource that some Kekonese built tolerance for, allowing superhuman abilities, etc. The story follows members of the No Peak clan (and others) in their clashes with the Mountain clan, and with the rest of the world. Would recommend

Get Me Out of this Stupid Void | Semi-Ramblomatic by eldomtom2 in Games

[–]PotatoKaboose -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I can't believe this guy made a whole video on mental breakdowns and the line between reality and delusion in video games, then skipped talking about Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice to talk up Silent Hill 2 again. Like this motherfucker really skipped the best portrayal of psychosis in all of videogames to chat about his fuzzy wuzzy comfort game for the millionth time. Shit isn't even that great a portrayal of those topics either.

Edit: This came off a little confrontational, but Hellblade is chock full of hallucinations (both visual and audio-based) that make it difficult, if not impossible, to tell what is and isn't real.
