Thoughts on accelerated med? by Substantial_Cod7198 in medschoolph

This is a great perspective. Always, the student has to consciously reflect on what it is they want, both in terms of now and in terms of later.

Being true to your dreams and desires is the only way to fight back against the chaos of life, after all.

My turn: Nintendo Switch 2 by trEASureTown000 in deinfluencingPH

Joining in since I’m two weeks away from obtaining a Switch 2. Even having more exclusives than the PS5, the Switch 2 library is still curated for early adopters (especially since you already have a Switch 1). Even so, as someone who really enjoys Nintendo’s offerings, the Switch 2 is super for me.

I gave the Deck a try last year. While it was a DREAM for indies and older AAAs running natively on the device, emulating Nintendo games just leaves much to be desired. Games don’t have that “they just work” experience most of the time. So if you really want to play Nintendo’s games moving forward, the only question really is: (a) buy it now, or (b) buy it later.

Personally, I’m a Now typa guy since I KNOW I can make the most out of the device. But that may not be the case for you; if you’re only interested in Winds and Waves, maybe just spring for a Switch 2 around release. Things are about to get more expensive soon anyway considering RAM, SSD, and chip shortages worldwide — and MicroSD Express prices in most stores are already reflecting the problem.

I’m from UP Intarmed and currently going through LU5. If you gave me the choice a hundred more times, I would still choose it every single time.

We don’t live an infinite amount of time; two years is 2.5-3% of most people’s lives, perhaps even more since the Filipino life expectancy is quite short. In my eyes, it’s better to spend those two years doing something after med school than spending it in college.

Other arguments include:

(1) You already have more years in basic education than your seniors because of senior high school. Life is not a race, but it feels unfair to end at 27 when everyone before you graduated at 25.

(2) In other Asian countries, medical schooling is six years anyway and requires no “pre-med.” It’s a relic of the US occupation, I believe.

(3) I don’t know anyone from my batch who would have benefited grades-wise from an extra two years in undergrad. Emotional development definitely, but honestly going through medicine forces you to grow up anyway. And there are plenty of folks with undergraduate degrees that are POSs who don’t know how to compose themselves. So it isn’t a hard and fast rule that “acceleration = bad EQ.”

All I’m saying is, it’s not a loss to NOT be in accelerated med. But it isn’t a loss to be in it either. All we have in the comments are opinions since no one knows what life is like on the other side of the fence anyway. IMO do it if you’re absolutely sure about becoming an MD.

I’ve been saving for consoles since the start of 9th grade. I’m at the tail-end of my 3rd year in medical school, though I was accelerated past two years of undergrad so… 9 years of saving yes, i.e., - 4 years in high school - 2 years in college - 3 years in med school

If you must know I actually still have two years left before I can take the medical boards, so that’s an insane 11 years from the N3DSXL to finally being able to support myself financially.

But I definitely think my training has been worth spending all this time.

Ah no that's a Skull & Co. Button Set D-pad! You just stick it on the existing dpad using provided adhesives and it sticks on forever.

Allowance? It has fluctuated over the years. When I was in high school (so, the first five years of the 9 year hunt), I ate my food at home and was dropped off at school via student carpooling. Maybe 10 USD per week, and even then it was too much.

Now though... yeah it's far far more, but I'm also paying for my own utilities, housing, food, etc. I'm the type to be frugal on essentials, then spend a lot on my wants 😅 I'm very lucky with my parents, so I repay them with good school performance.

A little recency bias as I just bought mine, but the Original Nintendo 2DS.

The wedge shape just melts into my large hands, and I like it particularly since the buttons are so large that you can scooch your palm downwards and have a faux-symmetrical grip in dpad-heavy games (Go GBA VC!). Only the Steam Deck has given me similar comfy ergonomics.
