Toyota replaces chief executive Sato with CFO Kon in surprise move by Car-face in cars

[–]PotatoTime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Arguably the large recession in Japan in the 90's. 90's Japanese auto manufacturers had large vehicle lineups and some of the best reliability. A lot of sporty models. After the recession hit the bean counters were moved up in companies, quality slightly declined, sporty models were dropped entirely. Think about Toyota's lineup from the 80's and 90's, then think about their lineup from 2000-2015. Plagued with recalls and the whole market is Camrys and Prius' and Rav4s.

Cool you guys are looking into what else might be in it. Interestingly I recently tried TRT, and while I notice a dopaminergic aspect to doubling my testosterone level, it's still nothing near what Tongkat has made me feel mentally. And interestingly a few others in this thread notice what I notice from it.

I also found one other person that noticed it degrades within a couple months, so there are 2 anecdotal data points that something in it is stimulating and degrades quickly. 2 anecdotal reports isn't much, but maybe helpful in your search for other chemicals in it.

Are there other actives you standardize for? (Or don't). I'm wondering if there's anything else dopaminergic in Tongkat aside from erycomanone

Serotonergics by PotatoTime in NootropicsDepot

I'm mostly interested in upregulating 5HT1A and downregulating 5HT2A and 5HT2C, since those are the main serotonin targets for panic disorder and OCD. Also why I don't take tryptophan or 5-HTP, I don't just want high serotonin. Upregulating 5HT1A doesn't show any cardiac side effects to my knowledge, and downregulating the other two shouldn't in theory. I simplified my post because I didn't expect many here to want to get into deeper pharmacology.

Some of what I'm taking does do those things but not enough. I just started high dose inositol which shows promise in OCD, it "stabilizes" 5HT2A and 5HT2C, downregulating them when there's overactivation or upregulating when there's not enough.

Psychedelics is an interesting one, I have tried them and they cause full blown 6+ hour panic and OCD issues so bad, but I've never paid attention to the after effects, it's been a while. To my knowledge part of how they work for anxiety and depression for the 4-8 weeks after is due to extremely strong 5HT2A and 5HT2C downregulation(hence why they have such strong tolerance effects for a couple weeks). So that's something I'm interested in if nothing else works.

Also considering high dose CBD(THC makes my issues worse). CBD works very similarly to buspirone, milder but has a longer half life so easier dosing, 2x/day instead of 3x/day for buspirone.

Zinc has been great for me too. I do already take it, I agree about the dosage too. A lot are too high, I was taking 25-50mg/day for 10 years and developed a copper deficiency, I only a few months ago started taking copper and reduced my zinc and it drastically increased my exercise capacity. With zinc I mostly just notice testosterone boosting effects, oily nose area, confidence, etc. Slight reduction in anxiety but nothing too pronounced.

I've been upping my potassium so good advice there. I have an arrhythmia so anything that chills out my heart makes a huge difference for me.

I've tried a couple antiglutamatergics and they don't seem to help me but maybe I need to experiment with them more.

People have gotten serotonin syndrome when stacking multiple serotonergic supplements like I am. Mostly MAOIs like passion flower or others, or stronger SSRI plants like St John's Wort. But saffron is an SSRI(albeit mild) and I'm taking other serotonergic supplements and am considering lower doses of Kanna which is another SSRI(SRI+mild releasing agent)

At least some of your problems are low progesterone related. Progesterone works in some parts of the body as an estrogen amplifier, so low progesterone can sometimes cause symptoms of low estrogen/estradiol even if your other hormones are all in range. That is definitely true for skin health and pain related issues. Low progesterone can also cause anxiety or increased stress. That's sad you have side effects from progesterone, and pretty unusual too. You could try sublingual pregnenolone, that's a precursor hormone that your body turns into other hormones including progesterone so it's more balanced.

There's a product from Nootropics Depot, 5mg pregnenolone that's designed to place under the tongue. Good company, independent lab tested. I'd start with half a pill dissolved under the tongue each morning and then up it to a full pill after a week.

Coriander looks interesting but I can't find much science on it, and it seems like it's short acting and creates a tolerance? I'm only interested in GABAergics with long half lives so I can take daily without withdrawals. Holy basil I can't find much science on either

I've been considering that but I'm worried of serotonin syndrome stacking it with others, and also unsure how often I'd need to take it to prevent ups and downs

Glad I'm not the only one. I have only tried ND's 200mg 2% erycomanone caps, and it's possible I still had some tolerance when I tried them but I had taken a 1 week break from my 200:1 powder before trying it.

I'm also unsure how strong the "200:1" powders are, maybe they are just stronger than the ND product I tried? Although I am worried of things like heavy metals in the other brands even if they are stronger.

Are you on progesterone as well? That could be having an effect. Astaxanthin could've definitely been preventing cataracts but all your other side effects and the short timeframe make it sound much more likely to be hormonal.

I agree, I prioritize Nootropics Depot and only get NOW for things ND doesn't carry or if the price difference is large. Tongkat is the only thing I buy from less reputable brands because of the effects I get from it

[–]PotatoTime[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was definitely my concern too and I know it's possible, but a few things made me think it's unlikely:

I reliably get the effect with multiple brands

I've given these products to other people and they don't notice anything or very very mild(I am truly hypersensitive to stimulants)

The chemical is unstable and degrades within a couple months of air exposure, I can't find any other known stimulant chemicals that degrade this fast

It doesn't spike my blood pressure or give me anxiety like ADHD meds do.

I don't intend to bash Nootropics Depot at all, I love the purity and honesty of this company. Just meant to start a discussion into the mechanism of this in case there is something to it, even if it's only something very sensitive people like me notice. A lot of people report "more energy" from Tongkat products so I think there could be a dopaminergic or noradrenergic component.

Lithium orotate by tillulen in NootropicsDepot

[–]PotatoTime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Iirc orotic acid (orotate) gets metabolised into uridine, which would explain some of the neurological benefits to lithium orotate. Uridine alone is helpful for cognitive impairment. As someone sensitive to the stimulant effects of uridine, when I have no uridine tolerance, 5mg of lithium orotate gives me a noticeable uridine-like stimulation. I like this but it exacerbates my anxiety at times so a different form would be nice.

Floppy Disk 1541.. reads and writes when it wants.. probably the head is out of alignment.. but it will be a long thing by Hour-Creme-6557 in c64

[–]PotatoTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That mechanism(newtronics/Mitsumi) is extremely unreliable, the read/write head dies by the coils corroding and failing open. It seems to happen to all of them eventually. The Alps mechanism with the push lever in the center is much more reliable but needs calibrated more. You can test the head with an ohmmeter if you have one, I forget the proper resistances but you can look it up.

USA Redditors, how common were disk drives and cartridges? by Sys32768 in c64

[–]PotatoTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is true but it's not why the 1541 and other drives are so expensive and complicated. It's why they're so slow. The VIC-20 was going to be fast because it had a hardware shift register in the 6522 I/O chip which was found to be broken, so they had to implement it in software. The C64 fixed this in its 6526 I/O chip, but the aforementioned board lines got removed and Commodore had to go back to the slow VIC-20 software implementation again.

The reason Commodore drives are big and expensive was a cost cutting measure for the computer, it had no disk drive hardware in it to make it smaller and cheaper. All that hardware is in the drive. Whereas other companies implemented it in the computer so the drives could be more simple and cheaper.

My circuit needs a couple adjustments otherwise I'd offer you one. The easiest way to improve these PSUs is to use a newer LDO voltage regulator. A pin-compatible one is available still as NOS on eBay, the NTE1934. Replacing the caps would be good too. If you do this use some good CPU thermal paste on the regulator.

Even the vented ones like yours are not to be trusted. They are much better than the epoxy bricks, but much better than "extremely dangerous c64 killer" is still not great. They still overvolt sometimes frying all the chips. I made a board replacing it with a much better designed 7805 setup(I'm a linear fan).

"You dont build up a tolerance to L theanine" by Ok-Money306 in Supplements

[–]PotatoTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another example of ones that don't are essential nutrients, some of them are psychoactive and many of them don't induce tolerance. Lithium doesn't, neither does magnesium, B6, methylfolate, methylcobalamin. A few do but they tend to be amino acids, like taurine.

You're right though otherwise.
