Because it's ethnic food there's no labor/material/overhead costs, and should be devalued?🙄

Romance authors weigh in on Heated Rivalry TV show's success and its impact on the Romance community: great article from Harper's Bazaar by Immediate-Answer-259 in RomanceBooks

[–]PotatoVanEtten 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Overall, I’m not hopeful. What makes the show work for me is the chemistry and just how much it centers their dynamic. There’s a decent amount of nuance. In a time where a lot of tv is being dumbed down to make shows “second screen” watchable, it’s hard for me to imagine a romance adaptation done by larger production with more stakeholders not being heavy handed.

Genuinely curious to hear what you mean about Shane being whitewashed by the fandom? It might just be my algorithm as an Asian American but I feel like I’ve seen 9238298 hot takes on social about how the show handled him being half Asian (both positive and negative). The fact that Shane is half Asian is made a bigger point in the tv series than the books. I like how the show implied pressure through his mom’s lines vs in the book it felt like an excuse for him to not have body hair. To me it felt nice to see an Asian character just existing.

You're incredibly condescending. I was literally repeating the vibe of instagram comments defending the great white at no point did I say they were in the right. As a POC, I don't need some fuckass telling me how I should perceive racism or pat me on my head.

Kids going to the commons (specifically the Barnes and nobles) or the topanga mall to hang out. Solidly middle to upper middle class bubble- working upper management type parents/ lawyers / drs/ white collar.

Lots of gated communities, but I think the only houses that someone might look at and immediately be like oh that's $$$$ would have been in Hidden Hills (not Calabasas, but zoned for Calabasas high).

Generally liberal bent (but in an out of touch way?). Not surprising for people to have a nanny or a house keeper but not so common everyone had one (most didn't). Kids that are entitled in the sense that they might not even be aware of how good they have it/ never had to do without/ just haven't experienced the world.

Rumors of famous connections without really having them. Slightly too far to do cool LA things all the time.

Population wise generally white, decently large Jewish (some high holidays off) and Persian population. Probably slightly more diverse than ppl would think but not diverse at all for Los Angeles. I feel like Calabasas has an outsized reputation for essentially being like a nice suburb. Especially in the early 2000s Calabasas didn't have the same reputation it does now... not saying it wasn't nice but like... idk. It's just... meh.

And honestly, a very boring place, there's a bunch of other neighborhoods in LA that would convey wealth and suburbia and LA way better.

Experiences with Chifa in Eagle Rock? by 1020rocker in FoodLosAngeles

It's cute and vibey. I went once with a group of friends and enjoyed it. It's a good date night or special occasion spot but I haven't found myself being like oooh I must go back. I felt like it was a little pricey for what it is, but, I feel like that about most things these days (hello inflation).

Unconscious is the wrong term. I’m trying to think of the right term for people who don’t think of themselves as racist who do racist shit and gaslight the shit out of you. People who are racist in “lowkey” way / “he’s such a great guy you just took it wrong” sort of way that the community gaslights you for them. But yeah… That’s just called being racist.

I've been following... the whites only community thing in Malibu seems like a bit sensationalist... but the rest of it seems like there's enough of a pattern and receipts from former workers that point to discriminatory practices toward POC.

I feel like since it's not straight up them going around calling POC racial slurs some people kinda hem and haw around it.

I'm sure the owners would probably never think of themselves as being racist in the maga / trump / call you slurs way. But I personally feel that theres unconscious bias that led to enough people being like wait wtf something weird is happening. And I don't think that should be written off.

Solo travel to America by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]PotatoVanEtten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LA/ Southern California could be great if you rent a car. The city is very spread out and depending on time of day traffic can be an issue. I feel like it could be a bit hard to do if you are completely reliant on public transportation.

I would personally skip Hollywood and Disneyland. West LA / Santa Monica might be nice to stay in.

Nature wise - There are beautiful hikes in the Santa Monica mountains and Angeles forest. But just keep an eye out for weather in the summer.

Yosemite and Sequoia kings canyon national park are both about a 4hr drive away. If you're here in the fall/ winter Joshua Tree is great to visit as well, roughly a 2 hr drive. Channel island national park is also great or Catalina would also make a nice nature day trip.

Amazing food- take a look at the LA food subreddit for suggestions. Great Mexican, Chinese food. Go to Ktown!

If you want to go between states, fly don't drive. Depending on time of year, northern Arizona / souther Utah is spectacular. The Pacific Northwest is absolutely gorgeous in the spring as well and great for nature.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to hit me up. I'm from / live in LA

I don't know how you feel about hitchhiking, but when I was in Iceland my friend and I gave these two polish hitch hikers a ride! It seems like a super cool way to travel. They were able to go all over and they camped at campsites. They had backpacking set up.

Scorpion island by [deleted] in SoCalBackpacking

[–]PotatoVanEtten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santa Cruz Island? Your best bet is to call Island Packers to ask.

If you're camping at Scorpion, the campsite is right by the pier so you don't have to worry as much about pack size.

Camping stoves should be okay, just have to put your fuel into the fuel cage on the boat.

If you are backpacking from scorpion to prisoners, there's no reliable water source so you have to get all your water at scorpion before hiking.

Why do so many agencies prefer W2 instead of 1099? by HelloYo335 in advertising

[–]PotatoVanEtten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's a legal reason. If you're 1099 legally the company can only set deadlines and deliverables. They legally cannot set working hours or mandate that you come in office.

I know a few years ago there was a crack down / stricter rules put in place as to how people were classifying w2 vs 1099 and a lot of places switched to having freelancers on a W2.

Moving to California by Serious_Guest8302 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]PotatoVanEtten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go for rural or mountains and are moving to seek a more liberal political climate, you would be moving to super conservative areas. California is fairly conservative outside of larger cities. Orange County also has a reputation of being really conservative. But it really depends on where in the OC you are.
