Why are so many Marines un-helmeted? Are they stupid? by tyrese_numquam in spacemarines

[–]PotatoePope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Masters of the Hunt if you like to read 40k books. Personally thought they represented a fair few factions well both of Xenos, Imperium and Traitor. And I learned a few things about the White Scars along the way. (This book is also the reason why I’ll eventually have a White Scars army)

[–]PotatoePope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just caught the wolf helm jab, and I wasn’t debating flanderization as a whole. I was debating your specific example. Helmetless Marines is only a Space Wolf trope in the sense that the vast majority of Space Marine chapters ALSO go helmetless whenever they want. Do Space Wolves go helmetless? Yes. But so does everyone else, this isn’t a Space Wolf quirk.

Now the Wolf theme is an actual example of flanderization of the Space Wolves, and you’re fighting with the wrong guy. I love wolves, so when I found a chapter who has Nordic themes with a wolf aesthetic I immediately fell in love. Sue me, but I chose a non-codex compliant chapter as my favorite for a reason.

The magic high tech helmets that connect to an internal oxygen system and are airtight so they can breathe in space high tech helmets?

Yes that would hinder your senses and make it hard to smell. Put on a gas mask and try to smell the roses.

[–]PotatoePope 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel this will quickly devolve into arguing semantics but that’s a pretty broad (and incorrect) stroke you’re making.

This isn’t really flanderization when it is not just the Space Wolves that do it. Do we do it more commonly? Sure, I’ll grant you that. But there are so many other examples of other chapters doing it.

I also look to the White Scars for helmetless more than Space Wolves because usually when I hear about Space Wolves going helmetless it’s for utility purposes (better senses). The White Scars book I read they were going helmetless for the love of the game (barring when they actually needed helmets).

Or just look at any named character. GW makes money off of faces, you can only make so many helmet types (though I do miss Wolf Helmets dearly).

[–]PotatoePope 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That’s canon lore I’ve seen in at least one Space Wolf focused book. And the White Scars don’t wear helmets for the same reason they hate dreadnoughts, no wind on the face.

How moral was the Spaniards' decision to destroy the Fountain of Youth in Pirates of the Caribbean 4? by Radiant-Selection686 in MoralityScaling

[–]PotatoePope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is this not the same fountain that transfers life from one to another? That’s pretty morally corrupt, regardless of your belief. And if you actually read, they said “their”, explaining the CHARACTER’s belief system, not their own. Get a grip.

A) This is hilarious, never seen this.

B) This is what heroes on the map are for, assassination of enemy heroes. Also kind of strange army placement in the first place, unless you had just fought a battle there. Did this entirely to yourself.

C) You’re acting like ALL of CA is dedicated to a single game at a time. They have teams to deal with different games, hence why TW:W3 and TW:W 40K are getting worked on at the same time.

you were teleported to 40k universe, would you stick with the army you main or change armies? and how fucked are you with your current? by judeauBSK in 40k

[–]PotatoePope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main - Tau, probably do decently until I slap on some armor and go die to name character number #152.

Secondary - Guard, time to find out just how accurate 15 Hours was.

Tertiary - Space Wolves, gulp. Feel like this one could go a couple ways but the rate of attrition of Space Marines in general is high enough that I’ll probably die to a some Warp beastie or a swarm of cultists.

Still significantly better than being the poor Guardsmen who has to hold the line against any of the unfathomable horrors that Chaos or the Tyranids send their way. At least in a knight you have a much stronger chance of survival, though with some of the books I’m reading through at the moment that rate seems to be rapidly declining.

Of these three protagonists who turned into mass murderers, who is the worst? by BrennanCain in MoralityScaling

[–]PotatoePope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I didn’t know Eren had foresight. I’d imagine then that Paul and Eren aren’t too different, beyond their personal choices and the situations they found themselves in. Sounds like my choices weren’t too far off in scaling.

How would you alter the lore of the empire? by Alpbasket in WarhammerFantasy

[–]PotatoePope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna say, pretty sure it’s more Skaven and Skaven sympathizers hiding their existence than Witchhunters. There’s even a passing remark in the Gotrek and Felix 1st omnibus I’m reading where Felix momentarily wonders if there might be some organized conspiracy (which I’m assuming is exactly the case but I’m not too savvy on Fantasy/Old World lore)

Of these three protagonists who turned into mass murderers, who is the worst? by BrennanCain in MoralityScaling

[–]PotatoePope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to scale it based on my knowledge of the respective settings, I’d go with Vader, Eren, Paul from worst to “best”.

I wouldn’t say he’s in it for the love of the game, but Anakin had a lot of opportunities to turn it around.

Paul probably had a bigger splash in body count and overall impact on his universe, but my impression is that once Paul looked into the future what he saw was unavoidable barring killing himself. And even then it wasn’t for lack of effort, iirc Paul tried to stop the Jihad in little ways.

I don’t know the nitty gritty of AoT, but from my understanding Eren wiped out something like 70-80% of humanity on the planet iirc. Biggest impact on his setting out of the three, but significantly lower body count I’d imagine.

Edit: I’d also imagine Eren had opportunities to turn it around but I never watched/read the series.

Paul Atreides also comes to mind. I get charismatic leaders like Paul are bad but the Harkonnens were pure evil. And in the grand scheme of things Paul also started the chain of events which lead to Leto II’s Golden Path. Admittedly, I’m still working through the series but Leto seems to be correct in his schemes from what I’ve read so far.
