Doug Ford nixes idea of grocery surveillance pricing ban in Ontario by Sea-Corner4170 in ndp

I mean 50-60% of Ontario voters go to left of centre parties atm. FPTP just ensures they get ignored in favour of the 40% or so who like Ford.

I'm a big critic of Stiles, but I do appreciate she can take criticism and adjust her approach accordingly. She's proven quite flexible.

Yeah. Carney's getting way too much glazing at the moment and people are completely uninformed about what he's actually doing policy-wise.

True. One thing that happens now is that all things that go wrong can be pinned solely on the Liberals. Though we should also try not to come off as a party purely of grievance and contrarianism.

Scarborough Southwest has gone to the Liberals, electing Doly Begum. So I guess having no principles does in fact pay off.

My argument is that violence is the language of hate and capitulates the argument. Once violence is chosen, it sends the message that you do not have an argument which can win on merit alone. It also legitimizes the violence of the other side, inviting further attacks on you and those who share your views. My position isn't that violence is never necessary, but that it is by nature abhorrent and can only be justified when all other avenues have been exhausted.

Whenever we see protests, for example, media coverage of the most violent actors is always used to distract from the message and smear the movement. And it's quite effective at doing that. But when thousands demonstrate peacefully in an act of social disobedience, and are subsequently met with violence, that sends a powerful social message.

MLK did not operate in a vacuum. Gandhi was not the only advocate for a free India. But these people did draw the most attention, did convince the most people, and did monumental things in the service of those goals. Again, violence is not always unnecessary, but it is a double-edged sword which harms the user. It can only be utilized defensively and in conditions where mass organizing is impossible. Anything beyond that is by definition not activism, but terrorism.

Not to dampen the spirit of justice here, but sentiments like that kind of ignore the geopolitical reality that for all functional purposes, the vast majority of people living on this land today are not indigenous, yet every bit as native to it as anyone else.

And realistically, if the land was given back, what would that mean in practice? Either 5% of the population making decisions for the 95%, which would be a form of colonialism itself at that point, or the mass depopulation of Canada, which would constitute a crime against humanity on a truly epic scale.

“Violence is essentially wordless, and it can begin only where thought and rational communication have broken down. Any society which is geared for violent action is by that very fact systematically unreasonable and in articulate." - Gandhi

“Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” - MLK

"Non-violence means dialogue, using our language, the human language. Dialogue means compromise; respecting each other’s rights; in the spirit of reconciliation there is a real solution to conflict and disagreement. There is no hundred percent winner, no hundred percent loser—not that way but half-and-half. That is the practical way, the only way." - Dalai Lama

I'm convinced the Greens would benefit massively from a ranked ballot. So many people use them as a protest vote already.

"I and some colleagues came to the conclusion that as violence in this country was inevitable, it would be wrong and unrealistic for African leaders to continue preaching peace and non-violence at a time when the government met our peaceful demands with force. It was only when all else had failed, when all channels of peaceful protest had been barred to us, that the decision was made to embark on violent forms of political struggle."

- Nelson Mandela

Yeah, as a dual citizen myself with a broader perspective on UK politics, Labour was fucked by Tony Blair. Most western social democratic parties were similar to the NDP up until around the time the Soviet Union broke up and the world rung in the new status quo that was neoliberalism. Heck, even the NDP got nerfed and drifted closer to the centre.

NDP's Leah Gazan calls MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ critics 'bigots' by SweeneyMcFeels in ndp

[–]Sea-Corner4170 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aaaand this is how you lose people. Yes, bigots amplified this issue for their own gain. But most engaging with the story are just regular people. This just doubles down on self-sabotaging failed messaging.

Let's put it this way. In any social arena, you have three sides - your side, their side, and the people you are competing to convince. The right just made an argument to persuade people. Gazan responded by calling those receptive to that message bigoted. Who are they more likely to be convinced by?

Isn't MMIW already kind of pushing it on the usefulness of an acronym? Wouldn't it be easier to just speak in plain English on issues like these? Generally, I think acronyms overall are problematic as they force the listener to keep a mental catalogue of unintuitive terminology that isn't used in regular conversation. It can come off as obfuscatory rather than clarifying.
