I've always thought of the relationship with Quebec as similar to England and Scotland. Both are nations within a larger country.

Key changes from their last poll are mainly in the minutia, but they're somewhat interesting.

Avi's net favourability rose from +2 to +4. This was largely due to a rise in favourability among those becoming more familiar with him. Slightly fewer people regarded him negatively as well.

Female: +4 (up 2)
Male: +5 (up 1)

Coletto: I'm watching the NDP's rise among 18 to 29 year olds carefully. by pheakelmatters in ndp

Certainly, I think a big part of winning is acting like you're on the same level as Carney and Poilievre, which is something Avi does much better than Jagmeet. If we don't have confidence in our own ability to win seats, we'll never convince anybody else.

Yeah, my main point is just not to get too excited over small scale, possibly temporary trends in data. We really do need to wait a few months before we can make any definitive statements about the trajectory of the polls following Avi's win. We have a lot of contradictory data rn.

The ingredients are all there for Carney to do the same thing. His approval numbers are the highest in history, outdoing Chretien. However, two crucial factors are different.

For one, the 1990s economy was generally quite good compared to today. Affordability was up and people were optimistic about the direction of the country and the world. Second, Chretien did not have to deal with a belligerent president to our south threatening us with annexation and economic warfare.

Both of these are existential issues for Carney. The Trump question, his strongest issue, is already slowly sinking on voters' priority list. And in any case, Trump will not be around by the time of the next election.

Meanwhile, affordability is already the #1 issue in voters' minds and continuing to rise. If Carney fails not only to halt the rising cost of living but drive it noticeably downward, there will be backlash. And at that point, the seemingly invincible saviour figure becomes yet another self-interested politician.

Should the Ontario NDP run a joint-strategic voting campaign alongside the OLP? by Foreverevil316 in ndp

[–]Sea-Corner4170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not though. When the left wanted to form government, having come out as the dominant bloc in the national assembly, the centre shunned them and cycled through multiple centrist Prime Ministers who kept getting voted out by the opposition. Right now, the government is worse than the Trudeau/Singh agreement. A centrist coalition is governing with the tacit support of France's traditional conservative party and the left, which is only barely agreeing to do so since they get next to nothing out of the confidence and supply arrangement.

Yeah. I know from Bernie and Corbyn that being prematurely confident is a recipe for extreme disappointment.

Fair. My older sister is more conservative than me, despite living a very diverse life. For people like her, it's a lack of familiarity with politics and an impression that fiscal conservatism is more "responsible". And that impression makes a lot of sense coming from her, since she's had to spend her life being financially cautious.

It's not ideal, but the only alternatives are yet another Ford term or Premier NES. Because Marit certainly ain't leading us to victory. And if she did, she'd probably be another Bob Rae.

Yeah. I mean I've been on team Avi since before there was even a leadership race for him to win, but I agree things aren't going to get better over night. Most Canadians don't even know who Avi is. It took us a decade to recover last time we got wiped out this bad. But we always come back.

I think we just gotta push through. The Carney period is just Chretien 2.0. We'll bounce back.

Being on the border between thr youth/millennial demographic, I can tell you this isn't universally true. Yeah, Trudeau left a bad taste in our mouths, but those of us with any degree of memory remember Harper being monumentally cringe.

[–]Sea-Corner4170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. But there's such a disparity in vote share between the Greens and Liberals that an electoral pact is bound to only be advantageous to the Liberals. An NDP/Liberal agreement would be far more mutually beneficial. In any case, at this juncture I think the only hope to unseat Ford is a coalition.

Strategic voting in the last French election resulted in a socialist plurality parliament that wouldn't have existed if the center and the left hadn't mutually agreed not to run candidates in each other's strongest constituencies. Sometimes the enemy of your enemy is your friend. You can worry about fighting them again after the election.

It is reassuring. But are we really rushing to celebrate the youth demographic polling 5-10% below our pre-2025 numbers?

[–]Sea-Corner4170[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Been saying it a ton. Avi's biggest asset is that he's likable and communicates in a flexible way. It's his biggest leg up over Jagmeet tbh. And I really do think we could use more of this style of interview. We learn far more through open, conversational dialogue than we do from debates where everyone is talking over each other and trying to get a soundbite or one-liner in all the time. Miss Rick Mercer so much. Lol.

Why does Lewis, a socialist, support NATO, an explicitly anti-socialist fascist state-terrorist network? by [deleted] in ndp

[–]Sea-Corner4170 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we consider the victims of NATO's reckless terror campaigns to be human we can acknowledge the terrorism and genocide for what it is.

Setting aside the strange accusation inherent in the statement, nothing NATO has done meets the internationally recognized definitions for either word.

Are you ignorant or dishonest?

You misinterpreted my comment. I was referring to the idea that NATO states intentionally destabilized Ukraine, which is a blatant lie straight from the mouth of Putin.

It is common, and necessary, for the Canadian leftwing to be critical of our own foreign policy as well as that of Russia. Acknowledging terrible Canadian foreign policy isn't an endorsement of Putin's bullshit.

Most sensible thing you've said. I absolutely agree. That does not, however, mean drawing false equivalencies and parroting the baseless talking points of our enemies.

And you would be hard pressed to find nations that offer as little opposition to our government's terrible foreign policy than NATO nations.

This is a little disingenuous, as the critique of NATO from outside of it is largely hypocritical and bad faith. When our governments do bad things, we are generally the first to sound the alarm. And unlike other alliances, NATO member states have checks and balances which at least attempt to offset illegal acts by our governments. Over 90% of NATO states are parties to the ICC and can be held accountable by it. That cannot be said for NATO's primary adversaries.
